  1. [expletive] you to all of the hells. Well of course it sounds bad when you ignore the part about Loria being cast back into the flames that whelped him.
  2. Please tell me someone else clicked that link. Bookmarked it.
  3. I'm not that worried about DeJesus. First, it's only spring. Second, his walk rate looks decent (12%) and third, although his AVG is down, half of his hits have been for extra bases. His spring baBIP is .216 and he's hitting almost everything in the air right now. It's either a very small sample, or he's become a totally different (and worse) hitter than ever before. I'm taking small sample, which is to say, it's only spring.
  4. So you're saying he knows which hotels everyone stays in?
  5. Was Wood lifted due to injury, or was he just that bad in his third of an inning of work?
  6. I largely agree, although I worry they really might go with Mather over one of Campana/Johnson. Looks about as good as can be assembled at present.
  7. Wood and Volstad are the only rotation contenders (excluding hot garbage like Coleman) who have minor league options. While building asset value is important, having rotation depth has been a stated priority of the new front office. Dumping veteran pitchers doesn't build rotation depth. Wood and Volstad will have many years of team control to build asset value. edit: That having been said, I'm sticking with my Garza/Dempster/Maholm/Samardzija/Volstad prediction. I also think this thread should be repurposed as an opening day rotation prediction thread, because that seems more fun.
  8. On top of the usual "It's ST" caveat, Marmol is predominantly a breaking ball pitcher re-tooling his mechanics in the dry Arizona air. There are bound to be rough innings.
  9. Jesus Christ, Soriano. BP from Arroyo.
  10. Pitching prognostications aside, Rizzo gets the start today: David DeJesus, RF Jeff Baker, 2B Starlin Castro, SS Blake DeWitt, 3B Marlon Byrd, CF Reed Johnson, LF Welington Castillo, C Anthony Rizzo, 1B Matt Garza, P

  12. I highly doubt either would be in Iowa long. If Dempster or Maholm are performing well in June, they will be dealt to make room for whoever is in AAA (more likely Maholm, as he lacks Demp's NTC). That having been said, I imagine the talents of Wood and/or Volstad will likely be "wasted" in 2012 whether they pitch with the big club or not.
  13. Wood and Volstad both have minor league options (I think, correct me if I'm wrong), so one of them is likely to be left out of the rotation, at least initially. If I had to guess, I would say that the Cubs go with Garza, Dempster, Maholm, Volstad and Samardzija to start the season. Wells to the 'pen. Wood to Iowa. All of this is pure conjecture, of course.
  14. Bulging cervical disc.
  15. =D> That's a damn fine word. Totally cromulent.
  16. From Tim Sheridan's Blog at BOS: Sheridan also notes that Volstad broke a couple of bats.
  17. I forgot that Koyie Hill was with STL now. He saw his first spring action today, going 0-2 with an error. Midseason form already.
  18. Solid start to the Spring for Samardzija: 3 IP, 1 H 3K (35/26 pitches/strikes, 3/1 GO/FO). Lone baserunner was CS, so he faced the minimum.
  19. The batter's eye is being repainted black.
  20. http://www.andrewclem.com/Baseball/Diag/MarlinsBallpark.gif The blue oval just to the left of center is where the sculpture stands. Even if it's not directly in their sight line, I can see how the sculpture could certainly present a distraction to lefties. I look forward to teams complaining about this all season long. Edit: Here's an older image of Stanton taking BP. The big concrete spiral/cylinder off to the left houses the glorious monstrosity. http://media.tcpalm.com/media/img/photos/2011/02/15/420110215180637001_t607.JPG What kind of fool puts a 3 story, multi-million dollar psychedelic aqua-mobile at the very edge of the batter's eye?
  21. Nope. Pitcher's hand--->bat--->face. Video
  22. This statement contains near-lethal levels of of grit and hustle.
  23. Hot, intrasquad action begins. Lineups, stolen from BN:
