We’re only a third of the way into the season and Steele is already 50 innings from his professional career high in innings.
I’m sure the Cubs are going to use any reason at all to limit his innings from time to time.
I also think his missing some time also contributes to it. Only 138 innings in 2022, missed all of 2020, and only 102 in 2018, Not seen as a work horse.
But he's 3rd in the Majors and 1st in the NL in innings pitched so far this year.
He’s a rookie, so it’s not a huge sample size, but the reverse split is pretty stark. .917 vs RHB and .438 vs LHB.
So this lineup makes no sense at all.
Per BR, Wisdom has a .5 WAR for the season, but Cubs’ third basemen have an aggregate -0.3 WAR.
I realize Wisdom hasn’t played at 3rd the entire time, but still, that gives a pretty picture how bad the other guys have been at 3rd.
We're at 5 weeks of being a sub-.333 team ever since that 13-0 win over LA. It's starting to be a pretty damn huge chunk of the season. Can this team actually end up with a worse record than last year?
I was one of the few who liked the Hosmer signing. He was basically a no risk, no cost signing that could be cut cost free if he didn’t work out.
I was also assuming Mervis was going to be on the MLB roster from the jump and getting the majority of at bats at 1B or DH. I didn’t think Hosmer would be used as an excuse by the front office to keep Mervis down on the farm.
I don’t know what to think about Ross’ job security.
If management was actually telling the truth in that they thought this team would be competitive this year, I don’t see how Ross comes back if the season keeps going in the trajectory the team is currently on. If he does come back, wouldn’t it be an admission by management that they didn’t give him a good enough team? But that would put management in a position of having to explain to ownership how they spent $200 million on a team they didn’t expect to win anything.
In the end, Ross is looking at a third straight losing season as manager. Not many managers survive that regardless of other factors.
2 observations:
1. I’ve always loved the Twins’ tri-colored T-C helmets.
2. I don’t know how good Wesneski is going to end up being, but he is quite clearly at minimum a legitimate MLB-quality starting pitcher. The fact that the Cubs have 5 more years of team control for him and all they had to give up was Scott Effross is absurd. A complete steal by Jed.
I don’t care how hurt he is. Taking Hoerner out is the absolute right call. No reason have both Madrigal and Motel on the roster if you’re going to make him play through that.
send him back to the trainer for a massage, the hot tub and then some ice. See you tomorrow, Nico.
Maybe you could give a pass to the Cardinals for thinking the Cubs didn’t know what they were doing with Contreras, but I’m not sure how they looked past the fact that nobody else in baseball wanted to give up a prospect to get Contreras at the deadline last year.
it’s one thing to think you’re smarter than the Cubs. Thinking you’re smarter than everyone else in baseball, too, seems like a particularly Cardinals form of arrogance.
After that utterly brutal start, Javy is slashing .325/.387/.494 over his last 23 games and 93 plate appearances.
Arbitrary end points and small sample size and etc., but the arrow seems to be pointing in the right direction.
