  1. Pirates won a couple games and got all full of beans, signing Reynolds to a $100 million extension.
  2. It's pretty grim looking back at who those 80s Bears teams actually had playing QB by the time the playoffs rolled around. In 84, Steve Fuller went 13 for 22, 87 yards, 1 Int in the NFC Championship game. In 86, Doug Flutie went 11 for 31, 134 yards, 1 TDs, 2 Int in the Divisional round. In 87, McMahon went 15 for 29, 197 yards, 1 TD, 3 Int in the Divisional round. In 88, McMahon went 14 for 29, 121 yards, 1 Int and Tomczak went 6 for 12 for 55 yards in the NFC Championship game. In 90 Tomczak went 17 for 36, 205 yards, 2 Int in the Divisional round. In 91 Harbaugh went 22 for 44, 218 yards, 1 TD, 2 Int in the Wild Card. Not one starter posted a QB rating above 55 in those 7 games. In 89 when the Bears missed the playoffs, Tomczak and Harbaugh had 68.2 and 70.5 QB ratings, respectively. It's pretty amazing some of those teams made the playoffs at all. From 86-87, Tomczak started 13 games while throwing 7 TDs to 20 Int, with the team somehow going 11-2 in those games. During that entire run from 84 to 91, as a team, the Bears threw more TDs than Ints in every season except 85 and 90.
  3. I thought it was weird yesterday they they had Wisdom at DH and Madrigal at 3B. Have they decided Madrigal is the better fielder? Or are they just instinctively unable to put Madrigal at DH and live with themselves? Given Hoerner’s history of injuries, if Madrigal is going to keep hitting, I wouldn’t mind seeing Madrigal spelling Hoerner at 2B and Hoerner DHing maybe once every 8-10 games or so.
  4. I didn’t see the roster move bringing Estrada up. I’m assuming they sent Assad back down?
  5. I’m at the game. I met Lee Smith! i told him I remembered him against Jose Conseco in the 87 All Star Game and he told me how he pitched 3 innings that game and had to take an at bat. He didn’t have a batting helmet so borrowed Ozzie Virgil’s Expos helmet. Awesome!
  6. Hughes looks a lot sharper than his 1st appearance in Oakland.
  7. Was anybody else worried that when the Dodgers’ trainer went out to the mound it was because Prior was hurt?
  8. Just need Alejandro Kirk and you’ll have collected the whole set.
  9. Vegas doesn’t seem like a great move for all the reasons people have already mentioned. North Carolina and San Antonio/Austin seem like the US markets best suited to take on a team. I don’t know if the Rangers/Astros would have the ability to make trouble for another Texas team. Montreal is probably the best North American option overall, but it seems like the Rays are the ones flirting with Canada. Problem with the Rays moving is that baseball will need another team to move into the huge and growing Tampa/Orlando area. I still think the best option for them is to build a new stadium on the Tampa side of the Bay.
  10. Another bad throw into the infield by the A’s to let Madrigal take 2nd. They’ve mentally checked out.
  11. Bellinger was going to stop at third until the A’s just decided not to field the throw into the infield.
  12. I really don’t want to jinx him, but I just don’t see these A’s scoring much against Justin Steele.
  13. The A’s are going to throw 2 games worth of pitches.
  14. I had them at 83 wins, but a fun team to watch, and that’s still where i’m at. Seiya injury and Mancini slow start aside, they’ve basically had everything go right for them so far this year. There will eventually be some tough injuries, bad breaks and slumps. We’ll see how they navigate those.
  15. A good night to get Hughes’ feet wet. No pressure.
  16. It’s “We Built This City” that the commercial turns into “We Built This Toilet,” which is absolutely perfect for that putrid excuse for Boomer nostalgia that ruined Top 40 radio for the last half of 1985.
  17. I don’t know if everyone is getting the same commercials I am, but there’s never been a song that deserved to be turned into a jingle for toilet bowl cleaner more than that godawful Starship song.
  18. Insert Simpsons “Stop, stop, he’s already dead,” meme here.
  19. I didn’t have “Leiter gets possessed by the ghost of Bruce Sutter” on my 2023 Cubs bingo card.
