  1. I'm really sick of seeing this logic(and the usual accompiniment of IT'S BEEN 100 YEARS GO FOR IT ALL NOW) as if there is no limit to the amount of young players you should give up to try for it all in one season. Let's say we give up all of our best tradeable assets for Peavy. Then Soto goes down and we need a stopgap to catch the rest of the way. What are we gonna give up for that rental? James Adduci? Every player in a system has some sort of value attached to them. Every time one is given up there is an opportunity cost at stake as to what else that player could acquire now, what they could acquire later, what they could contribute now, and what they could contribute later. Throwing the kitchen sink at a team because we've got a chance at it all is a good way to guarantee that you have only a few chances to win it all. - Pie is obviously no longer apart of this team's future plans. - Hill is obviously no longer the pitcher he once was and has already been rumored to be used in this potential deal - Marshall would be replaced with Peavy, advantage Cubs - Cedeno is battling it out with Theriot, and in all likelihood will probably be a bench player next year if Theriot is around - Ceda would be a useful piece for the Cubs in the future, but would his loss outweigh the gain of Peavy? - If Theriot goes, Cedeno probably stays and hopefully he doesn't crap it up like the last time he was given the starting job - Vitters, I would like to keep, but when will he be ready? 3 years from now? 4 years? It's still very early to determine whether or not he'll be a bust or a great signing. You're not understanding. Just because those guys mught not fit into the team's plans doesn't mean they don't have value. You only have so many pieces top use for trades and you want to blow them all.
  2. I'd be completely shocked if any of those 3 guys ended up with the Cubs, or any players of that caliber at all.
  3. I'd rather have Peavy. We don't need another backloaded contract killing this club in the future, which a deal to Sabathia likely would be. Peavy would be cheaper, slightly younger, and arguably just as good as Sabathia would be. Plus I thought Piniella said we don't have the luxury of going balls to the wall crazy with free agents because of the ownership change in limbo and we have to fix ourselves through trades? I don't think Peavy is close to as good as Sabathia right now. I'd be worried about how Peavy would do without playing half his games in Petco. Plus he was very Kazmiresque this season with his high pitch counts causing him to leave the game early all the time. Meanwhile Sabathia is an innings eating mahcine. I agree with you that I'd probably rather have Peavy at the price each owuld cost, but I don't think there's any way you could say Peavy is as good as Sabathia right now. Who is to say Sabathia will still be as good? Sabathia pitches 9 innings, yeah. But at what cost? High pitch counts each time out? Future arm issues? Who knows. Maybe he is a freak of nature. But the fact remains that Peavy is still an ace on almost any staff, and he will cost $8 mil (or $9, don't remember) this year, while Sabathia will cost someone $20 million. I'll still take Peavy. That gap between ability and payroll savings is too much to ignore, IMO I'm agreeing with you, and I would also rather have Peavy for all the reasons you mentioned. I'm just saying that right now Sabathia is better.

  5. If they were able to dump Marquis' salary and let Dempster walk, it wouldn't take a huge increase in payroll to get C.C., especially with the way Hendry backloads contracts. The main obstacle would be getting clearance to pay him 100-150 mil.
  6. I can't count the sarcastic statements in this thread on two hands. Again, great post, full of substance. And where did I say anything like that? If anything I made some vague reference to HILL not adjusting to big league hitters..not vice versa. Do you really not see how the way you started this thread lead to the sarcastic reponses you've gotten? Really?
  7. Pie/Hill/Vitters for Peavy. Too much? Probably, but I have little confidence that any of those guys will ever make us regret it.
  8. The same Magic announcers that were just questioning the Bulls decision to foul when they were trailing with less than 24 seconds left and a turned off shot clock?
  9. AKA Gordon being Gordon
  10. Are these Magic announcers for real? They were just questioning the decision to foul. Umm, there was 23 seconds left guys.
  11. There goes Noc for about 6 weeks.
  12. Deng is garbage. Also, Del Negro still has the "I can't believe I talked my way into a head coaching job" look on his face.
  13. I don't get why this is an issue.
  14. I'm not as excited about Burnett as everyone else seems to be, especially for the crazy money teams are lined up to pay him. Assuming Dempster's year wasn't a total fluke, Dempster will be $3-$4 million cheaper per year for 1-2 less years. You really think Burnett is going to go for insane money? I certainly see Sheets and Sabathia going for insane dollar amounts, but i'm not sure how I feel about Burnett. He had his worst year since 03 last year so possibly his price tag will be a little less? Or maybe that's just wishful thinking.         career high 18 w's mon frere, the guy finally figured out how to win #-o tree is clearly being sarcastic. BUt that's how GM's are gonna see it. Where is the "clear" sarcasm? You must know him better than I do. clearly. tree is one of the smartest baseball posters on here. I don't doubt it, I'm just not familiar with him and I have seen people on here make statements like that before and actually mean it.
  15. Roy Williams DO SOMETHING YOU PIECE OF TRASH

  18. What don't you understand about it? Fukudome doesn't hit enough to be a right fielder. By moving him to center, it allows Hendry to go out and get a RF who can actually hit. Good hitting right fielders are much easier to find than good hitting center fielders. Plus in center he'll have a platoon partner so he won't have to face lefties. Why would you want to keep him in RF when that's the position where upgrades are available?
  19. Then why is he always wrong?
  20. Then the casual fan is stupid. Yes, that's right I said stupid. Shootouts disrupts the continuity of the game. It's an embarrassment to the game of Hockey, and to it's tradition. And no I know I won't "get over it" because it's stupid. Might as well say...hey baseball, when the 9th inning is over, were going to have homerun derby. If hockey wants to increasing scoring, how about making the rinks international size, which is bigger then the NHL size, or instead of it being 5 on 5, make it 4 on 4 on NHL size ice. No need for shootout, period. I won't get over it, until it's gone. I rather see a tie then some carnival parade that is the shootout. Couldn't have said it better. Like I said... why should a 1 v 1 decide the outcome of a team sport? So do you think walkoff home runs shouldn't count?
  21. The Padres would be better off hanging onto Peavy than trading him to the Cubs.
  22. I'd be curious to know your reasoning for this. because he... like... gives up home runs and junk. unacceptable
  23. What did he have, 5 or 6 no hitters? 7 no-no's. Forgot to add that. When you think of Nolan Ryan you think of one of the most dominating pitchers of all time, and it's a shock to see that he's never had a Cy Young award. He could certainly be dominant, but he also had 292 losses and 2,795 walks in his career. He finished most seasons right around .500. Why are you paying attention to a pitcher's W-L record?
  24. I have 2 questions for you. 1) If Soriano leading off is so crippling to an offense, then how did the Cubs lead the NL in runs this season? 2) The Phillies have gotten a .250 .288 .429 line out of the leadoff spot this postseason. How can they possible be one win away from a title? I bet that blows your mind. BTW, the AL Champion Rays have gotten .258 .333 .403 out of the leadoff spot in the playoffs. Look dude, we get it. I think most people here would agree that Soriano is a frustrating player with a terrible contract. The problem is that you're drastically overemphasizing the importance of a leadoff hitter. Seriously guy, it's not that important.
  25. Really? We had no idea you felt that way. Anyways, I'd say the majority of the people on this board agree with what you just said.
