  1. Exactly. Fontenot struck out a lot last season, but also walked a ton and was extremely productive. If he did it for 200-300 at-bats last season, why can't he keep doing it? Strikeouts aren't a big deal if you've proven you can hit with them.
  2. Well, they can be related, but to say they go hand in hand is silly. To say that strikeouts are the main reason they'll never be the same is even more ridiculous, especially when you consider that Fontenot outperformed Pedroia in the time he played this season. Obviously that doesn't mean he would have if he played an entire season, but he pointed out that strikeouts will keep Fonenot from being as good as Pedroia. Okay, so why didn't they keep him from doing that this season in a pretty big chunk of at-bats? Think about all the crappy players who don't strike out and then think about all the elite hitters that do. Seriously guys, strikeouts aren't that big of a deal.
  3. I'm totally on the Hawpe bandwagon. I think he'd be a solid addition to the team, and provide a left-handed middle of the order bat. I just don't think CO is willing to trade him nor would we have what it takes to get him. His home/road splits aren't bad either. But yeah, I don't see that happening.
  4. I'd say the biggest reason is talent, not K rates Obviously, the two are related. No, they aren't. Seriously, strike outs aren't that big of a deal. They're not good, but to say that talent and strike outs go hand and hand is ridiculous. You know what 2 things DO go hand in hand? Patience (walks) and strikeouts. Fontenot drew a ton of walks this season, Pedroia did not. It's no surprise that Fontenot struck out more.
  5. Did you guys see the girl at the Cell holding up the "Hey Cubbies, leave the postseason to us" sign during game 3? Pretty funny, especially considering the Sox were down 2-0 when she made the sign.
  6. He said he was talking about their size and relative power.
  7. Daisuke had 94 walks in 167.2 innings last season.
  8. He's going to get like 4/75 from the Dodgers, then inevitably put up an .890 OPS next season.
  9. Why didn't you just say so? Don't be ridiculous. If Soriano had a stat line like DeRosa's, but he had dropped a routine flyball costing five runs and later failed to drive in a runner from third with one out in a crucial situation with an extremely poorly executed AB, no one would hesitate to describe his performance as horrible. Just because DeRosa is generally a solid fundamental player, some choose to lessen his culpability. You make no sense. People (reasonable people, at least) wouldn't generalie an entire performance based on one play. DeRosa definitely had a key error and the at-bat with Soto at third was not good, but to say he was "horrible" is ridiculous and you know it.
  10. If by everything you mean "one bad play", then yeah.
  11. My guess is they are going to let Dempster walk and maybe let Wood walk. Gotta shed salary somewhere. Hendry said last week that he fully expects to re-sign Dempster and so does Ryan. I also can't imagine Wood leaving.
  12. And probably will. He was lights out in the second half, so I think there will be a pretty big market for him. The fact that he actually stayed healthy will outweigh his bad first half in terms of terms of what kind of deal he'll get. I don't want him though. We'll already have one injury prone guy in Harden, we don't need another...especially at a high cost. I doubt Hendry does anything for the rotation other than re-signing Dempster. I don't really expect any FA signings, actually. All the money is going to have to be spent of Dempster and Wood. I'd let Dempster walk, but apparently JH won't let that happen. I wish we could make a run at Lowe, depending on how many years he wants.
  13. As long as DeRosa repeats any of his last 3 seasons, we don't need a 2B. Not to mention he's been one of the very few guys that has actually showed up at the plate in the last 2 postseasons.
  14. It will be interesting to see if he's used as trade bait. What kind of value do you guys think he has? He's a former first round pick and he's hit pretty well at every level, so it's not like he came out of nowhere. I think he could definitely be an .800-.850 OPS every day player.
  15. Huh? So one error (albeit a key one) means he was horrible? .333/.333/.750 with 2 doubles, a home run, and 4 of the 6 RBIs That's horrible?
  16. What do you mean by "steeper declice" for Soriano? That implied that he declined this season, which is just not true (unless you're talking about his legs). His offensive numbers were right where they should have been, and for much of the season he was actually putting up career numbers (rate wise). I'm not saying he won't start declining, but he didn't show any signs of it this year.
  17. Yeah, at first I was mad. Now I'm just sad. I feel like I just broke up with my girlfriend or something. Just, empty.
  18. How about anything but "be patient"? You really don't see the prolem with that quote? Really?
  19. Yeah, Hendry's an idiot. He put together a great team. It's not his fault they completely blew it. They are NOT A GREAT TEAM. They are exactly the same team as last year when it comes to winning when it counts. So you knew that they'd choke like this after winning 97 teams? I'm not a Hendry fan (at all) but to criticize his performance in building the 2008 team is idiotic. He did all that he could. This is all on the players and coaches.
  20. That seriously is an unforgivable quote. That just shows how out of touch he is with the importance of what just happened. Only 6 more years!
  21. What can we really do? we have center field and MAYBE rf (though I doubt they'll give up on Fukudome already after shelling about 48 mil) to fill. I really don't expect much this offseason. They'll probably re-sign Wood and overpay for Dempster, then tell us how they've already built a 97 win team and they just need to stay healthy.
  22. How can you guys possibly watch those right now? That's the last thing I want to do. It is depressing as hell to just think aout those now meaningless plays that we cared so much about.
  23. I didn't see it, but my friend told me about it and I saw it on another board as well. What a joke.
