If the Hawks are rebuilding, this doesn't help them at all. They get nothing for the future for one of their first line forwards on a reasonable contract. If they're playing for next year, then they traded one of their first line forwards for a second or third line defenseman. They even kept ownership of $1M of Saad's contract here, so the deal didn't free up much room under the cap. Z is fine, but there probably will be defensemen available in free agency that would provide equivalent production for the same or lower cost due to the depressed mid-range of the market this year. Then you could still trade Saad for picks/prospects and have the picks/prospects and the average defenseman. This was just dumb. they should be rebuilding, I'm not arguing that. but I disagree with saad helping them more if they're trying to win now. zadorov helps this team more, and at 25, you could still re-sign him. our biggest need going forward is defensemen. saad at 5-6 mil or whatever he'll get doeant really work with this roster going forward. so if you want to complain about them having no plan, go ahead. we're going nowhere. but as far as value goes, this was a whatever trade.

i kind of want the astros to win, and then have the format go back to 5 playoff teams next year. since they got in at 29-31, they'd have 2 fake championships that nobody but them will ever take seriously

I mean that's the new deadspin in a nutshell. They are trying to create controversy instead of reporting on it. A coach in the cubs system did a murder suicide. In any other year this would have been a HUGE story. I'm not going to bother reading zombie deadspin's take on it, but I'm not going to pretend writing about it is "creating controversy". of course it should be written about, i don't think anyone is questioning that. the cubs angle is just sloppily shoehorned in.

vegas was able to extend lehner for just 5/25. hawks really bungled this, he would have been a much better use of resources than all the nonsense they've spent money on the last couple years bowman has to go. they got some luck and had a chance to reboot things, but he failed miserably. last offseason was the nail in his coffin.

Why do people keep pretending spending money equals wins? They just lost to the team with the lowest payroll in baseball. The resources have been put into this team, the players just aren't good enough. do you think mookie betts would have helped this team this year? dj lemahieu? any of the million bats that signed the last 2 offseasons? obviously the core was a huge problem year, but to say that spending more doesnt help you win is pure idiocy. pointing out exceptions doesnt make it less true.

didnt you say you wanted a full rebuild? I see a lot of cubs fans talking about a full teardown and rebuild while also saying they want to keep hendricks and darvish. if you're doing a full rebuild, those are like the first 2 guys to go. I think the only way you keep darvish is if you plan on competing no later than 2022 (while trying a yankee style reboot). and even then you should probably still trade him now, considering his age and health history. basically the only way it makes sense to keep yu is if we're trying to win next year, which I think we should be doing. just with a completely different offense.

keep: rizzo, baez, bryant trade: happ, schwarber, willson i simply don't give a shitt: every other position player i say keep baez/bryant because i don't think they have great value and i'd rather hope for a rebound and maybe for a team friendly extension (i still think this happens with javy)

they're fine with the cubs. anything that makes the fans more amenable to a firesale and rebuild is probably good for them.
