  1. Picking nits, but Pujols first season with the Angels was the only one where he put up over 3 fWAR, which was 2012. Since then he's had one other season above 2 fWAR, and in the last 5 years before 2020, he was worth a combined -0.2 fWAR. Disaster of a contract.
  2. Really enjoyed reading that, thanks for the update. Anecdotally, the hardest thing to practice away from an actual course is the short game. I went to the lake shore driving range and put like, 10 straight lob wedges within an 8 foot circle 50 yards out and felt on top of the world. And then the next round I played was an endless march back and forth over the green as I skulled one wedge after another. You just really need to get used to how actual grass/ground reacts to your high loft clubs. What also helped was just acknowledging that I wasn't Phil Mickelson, and getting comfortable just quarter swinging a PW and letting it roll to two putt territory.
  3. It's the clear disdain of college students coupled with the 'play a game for me to watch (for free!)' that really gets me.
  4. Ian Happ has been the best offensive player on our team since he was called back up. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=100&type=8&season=2020&month=1000&season1=2019&ind=0&team=17&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2019-07-25&enddate=2020-08-19
  5. Well, now that the bullpen doesn't look like a total dumpster fire, just slot Quintana into Chatwood's spot and hope Chatwood can provide a live pen arm if he gets healthy this year.
  6. Honestly, if you (or anyone for that matter) need extra people to split them with I may be interested until my number is called. I live 7 blocks away from Wrigley but I probably wouldn't go all the time even if I could so actually having a limited number of tickets at a lower cost makes sense for me until I can get my own. Might take you up on that too (or at least, I've thought about opening it up to the board). I'm at the age where my friends are having kids (as did we) and moving out of the city...last year I had to kinda scramble to find people to pick up 5 games just to get our number down to 20. Who knows what's going to happen next year though...
  7. Yeah there’s more evidence Javy isn’t all that elite of a hitter than he is, at this point. Which makes sense with his profile. It also looks like we are continuing the wildly successful practice over the last ~3 years of letting guys just play through injuries with this KB wrist/hand/elbow/finger thing. At the least I hope he’s sitting going in to or coming out of the off days the next two Thursday's. I like that lineup with where we are at and what we know. Switch Bote and Heyward at the bottom now that I think about it more....makes it too easy for a tough lefty late in the game otherwise, even though Heyward profiles better as that 'second leadoff'. But yeah, Baez going forward seems to be absolutely still a first division starter, but someone you want to wait until his hot streaks come up before handing him a top spot in the line up.
  8. Just saw a super fun stat that Baez over his last like 450 PAs (since his heel injury last May) has been like a 90 wRC hitter. Between that and Kris Bryant's Nagging Injury, I present to you the new lineup (CC David Ross). Rizzo Happ Contreras Schwarber KB Kipnis Baez Bote Heyward
  9. My Dad had season tickets from like 1990 to 2005ish, gave them up and put his name on the list just to see how long it would take. Got the call before 2017 (sweet timing), but didn't want them so I took over. Have two bleacher seats and split them up among like 10 people...some people have 20 games, some people have 5, etc. I keep all playoff tickets and we just do a draft where every game is the same price. Worked out pretty well so far, even if I don't know if it's financially 'worth it'. Just good to have a reason to get to Wrigley a bunch.
  10. Schwarber Fan shows up in game thread #2 to say the bullpen sucks and to start Souza over Heyward. A week later, we need to DFA Almora (which, fair). Radio silence besides that, but now that we lose a few in a row, here he comes! What a life, man.
  11. The Josh Phegly DH experiment inexplicably continues.
  12. Probably a little tougher than normal to pick up an impact guy through a trade. You're going to have 20+ teams in 'contention', all of them having room for an impact reliever, with really only a handful of teams looking to sell.
  13. I too would love to get the best pitcher in baseball this year.
  14. This probably isn't super valuable in the grand scheme of things, but that's one of those things that never shows up in the year end numbers for KB. One of our outfielders goes down, and instead of having to plug in Almora/Souza, we get to insert our best bat/player off the bench.
  15. I voted for 7 inning double headers, but then realized they would be terrible in a normal, in person experience because teams would definitely still try to empty the stadium in between games. But if teams issued tickets for both, 7 inning games sounds a lot better.
  16. Shot a 43 at Billy Caldwell (generic 9 hole Chicago public course) this morning, which is definitely the best 'round' I've put together. Pretty terrible off the tee, but played around the green really well...only one double. Also played with a guy who kept wanting to talk about the "China Virus"....so that was fun.
  17. Piling on here. Figured that out around my 5th round this year when I realized that taking my 6 iron and just trying to punch out of the woods was giving me my best contact. Even 175 right down the middle off the tee is plenty valuable in a scramble, and getting the experience of hitting down the fairway is going to help a lot more than bouncing through the trees until you make it to the green. While I don't disagree with the concept, I have always found this hard to implement. Trying to shorten my swing or not swing as hard just messes up my timing. The advice for me that always seems to work is relax and let the club do the work. It seems like over-swingers throw their hips forward and then miss the ball instead of being smooth. Might just be anecdotal, but I feel like most beginners start in an overswinging mode. Playing with crappy clubs/balls, usually trying to catch up to everyone else, etc. Definitely not relaxed. I think what you're talking about is almost the next step, at least where I'm at. Slowly lengthen back out once you get used to a smooth, easy swing that you can replicate.
  18. Does a bubble playoff scenario allow the regular season to go longer than currently scheduled, if needed? Or are they still set on everything being done by November.
  19. Don’t be afraid to swing like 75% of your full speed. Good contact goes further than bad contact swung hard And in that vein, shorten your swing. Do what you think is 75% of your swing, it's probably actually how long your swing should be.
  20. Confirmed, positive tests = Forfeit, but those losses don't count for your draft position. With 16 teams making the playoffs, you really aren't giving anyone that much of an advantage.
  21. Any update on whether we need to venture over to St. Louis this weekend? Or can we effectively plan on a long weekend off and use the top pen guys accordingly?
  22. So against a lefty (granted, no clue what his splits are), we're going with Schwarber/Hoerner/Heyward. Almora and Souza, early warning that the Bobs are coming in to interview all the employees pretty soon here.
  23. Is 2 years, $25m a reasonable answer? Obviously time to see how much of this performance is real, but the dude had a 2.84 ERA (which was worse than his FIP) in the second half last year. He keeps his ERA under like, 3.8something, I'd probably be fine giving him the same contract we gave him the first time.
  24. Impressive night from Kyle. Not a strong lineup, but pretty much everything he gave up was soft contact. Singer’s windup is going to throw people off for a while, needs to lock in on the control a little bit.
  25. That is one hell of a sexy lineup. Edit: Seems like Almora might have lost his short side of a platoon job already.
