  2. He had 1000 PA as roughly a league average hitter prior to this season. I know a lot of people are predisposed to dislike Almora because he swings too much and therefore doesn't walk or hit for a ton of power, but he was a perfectly fine role player for multiple years until his struggles this year. That could be a blip and it could be him finally getting figured out for good, but scoffing at the idea that he's ever been useful is silly. It's at least party just SSS noise, but his collapse against LHP this year is really mystifying. Before that, my general frustration was how he was used (too high in the order, against too many RHPs) and how he was perceived by Cubs fans in general (lead off hitter, gold glove center fielder). A career 103 wRC+ against LHP with above average defense has a spot on any roster. Now I don't really know what you do with him besides send him to wherever Schwarber went before the WS to have him see endless LHP.
  3. Have you SEEN all the times his helmet has fallen off running the bases?
  4. I'm on the fence for that one. The Marisnick play is definitely more dangerous, but he showed what seemed to be genuine remorse almost immediately afterwards (what that's worth will vary for people), and what he did was a split second decision and a play that was probably legal for at least some of his baseball career. Throwing at a player, even if you didn't mean to throw high, is a premeditated decision to hurt someone.
  5. Almora is pretty much Corey Patterson except without the upside potential. That is being exceedingly harsh to Corey Patterson, who put up a 2.5 WAR in half a season followed by a 5 WAR season, and then another 3.8 WAR season for the Orioles. The odds of Almora ever reaching Patterson's 10.9 career WAR is like 100 to 1.
  6. Joe still thinks he has a mental injury. But other than that, no issue.
  7. Brewers/Hader came real close to blowing their game today. Whatever, maintain the lead.
  8. This was his first run allowed in 20 appearances (although he did let 3 of 12 inherited runners scored), going all the way back to mid-May. During that span he's allowed a .462 OPS. There are definitely some red flags that suggest regression is inevitable but lol he's been pretty damn effective. And really, he should be our lefty specialist. 53 lefties faced this year (potentially before today), 102/170/204 line against.
  9. Baseball needs a loaner program. Send Miami some low A nobody and then tell them to pitch Underwood for 6 weeks to see what he's got and then send him back to us.
  10. Kyle Ryan, cool. I get that there's an off day so you can ride the bullpen. But still.
  11. From what I can tell on the videos, the goal is to get them to five or six feet long. At that point, they're pretty unstable and usually leaking leftover beer all over the place. It's entertaining, and far from the worst thing that's happened in the bleachers, but I get the Cubs not being huge fans.
  12. Yep. He's shown more of an eye than I thought, but eventually he's just going to stop seeing hittable fastballs, and I'm not sure he's going to be able to adjust. But that still means we should absolutely ride his bat through the adjustment phase.
  13. To be That Guy briefly, remember this game the next time we complain about the basket. Robel's home run is only a HR in Wrigley, and then Schwarber just muscles out a glorified pop out. Credit to Mills for fighting back and also saving the pen a little bit. Day off tomorrow, so shouldn't be any issues, outside of maybe Kimbrel being out since he's still ramping up. Win the series, and then keep doing that.
  14. I justify it by looking at the positive of not letting Maddon continue bringing in Monty with two guys on to face a tough lefty. In the short term, unfortunately, it probably means more Rosario (which, his entire existence continues to baffle me), but if we go into August with him and Ryan as our top lefties (or without letting Kintzler start taking those spots), then I'll just assume Theo has given up on this team.
  15. Some Twitter searching isn't getting me much anywhere, how do I get a little more context without clicking a barstool link? Apparently the new thing for Barstool type people in the bleachers is making long piles of empty beer cups ("Cup Snakes"). Barstool started encouraging it, think they are selling shirts on it now. The bleacher security people have been pretty quick to try and shut it down (looking under seats, etc.), and between that and Barstool pushing it, it seems like it's just getting more prevalent. Anyways, Barstool Chicago published an article today with a (pretty terrible) email from Julian Green, head of marketing or whatever, basically threatening to pull all access/affiliation/etc (and even legal action) unless they stopped promoting it. Really, everyone involved is terrible. Edit: They also apparently fired some bleacher security guy who went on one of the podcasts to give some background on the Cubs position towards it all.
  16. Do we want to talk about Cubs vs Barstool? No? Alright cool.
  17. And we were already pretty good at it... [tweet] [/tweet]
  18. Eh, if not apples to oranges, apples to much higher quality apples. Javy was always going to be able to fall back on solid, if not elite defense, and he always showed the power that Happ has struggled to consistently display. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was a mistake to send him down to start the year...but I also thought he'd go down there and tear it up for a month or so and force his way back up. Even if he was pissed off for a couple weeks and let it affect his play...it's the middle of July and he's still showing a 95 wRC+ down there, even with this hot streak. It's been disappointing. When Javy spent much of 2015 in AAA, he put up a 144 wRC+.
  19. I'm more interested in having a potential Almora replacement since the trade market is pretty much lacking in any interesting CFers not named Starling Marte. I want one too, but Happ isn't it. This bizarro version of Almora (87 wRC+ vs RHP, 48 vs LHP), you're right. Happ had a 118 wRC against RHPs last year. That was what made the original move so surprising, was because they seemed like a solid enough platoon. But with the way things have played out this year (Almora flipping, Happ struggling all year)...not sure what the plan is.
  20. Additionally...Maldonado was always going to get traded to a contender. We got there first, and sorting the catchers on FG by defense, there isn't a whole out there in terms of non-prospects from non-contending teams. Looking at the non-contenders, you have Hedges, Posey, Danny Jansen, Alfaro, Carson Kelly all as prospects. Then you hit Maldanado. Then you get to Barnhart, Wolters, and Maile, who are all hitting as bad, if not worse, than Maldanado (without nearly the track record). Everyone wants the veteran backup catcher...we might have gotten the best one available. Which, I'm aware isn't saying much, but it's something.
  21. every bench player is already effectively a no hit catcher so why not get a real one? Agreed. We're only going to be about a month out from expanded rosters when Contreras comes back (if you're optimistic about his injury, which I'm not). For that month, Caratini becomes your top bat off the bench who you can use freely, instead of worrying about burning your backup catcher. Plus, as has been pointed out, we were one catcher injury away from putting Taylor Davis on a postseason roster (and there are no more August trades). This gives you flexibility on the injury, pinch hitting, trading Caratini, etc.
  22. Are you talking about Willson Contreras? The converted infielder who has been the primary catcher the past four years? You are disappointed they handed the keys to him, 4 years ago? Four years they've largely spent in 1st place and been among the best teams in baseball. That disappoints you? I don't really like him as a catcher and our pitching has degraded each year hes been our fulltime catcher. So, yes. He's had the keys. But they have an opportunity to hand those keys to a better defender. So I'll rephrase and say that I'll be disappointed if he retains those keys. Alright first off, let's throw out 'our pitching has degraded', because that's nonsense. Fairly positive he isn't responsible for Lester and Hendricks getting older, or Theo picking Yu over Jake, etc etc etc.
