McGreevey would be on normal (four day) rest but looks like they've been trying to give him additional days off between starts. We're going to see him at some point, and the ERA is hiding some ugly metrics (you need to strike out more guys than that), so might as well hope to get him today.

Cubs now up to 6 guys with a wRC at 120 or above. Dodgers have 5. Maybe they'll be sellers?

Yeah that goes back to Bertz' idea. If your opening day position player list is: LF: CF: PCA RF: 3B: Bregman SS: Dansby 2B: Nico 1B: Busch 😄 Amaya DH: That leaves 6 spots. Backup catcher, Kelly is the ideal but whatever, is one. Filling the other 5 with Whoever is left of Ramirez and Shaw (good against LHP, can play most anywhere) Conforto or a Conforto esque player (LHB, corner outfield type) Jo Adell (LHP masher, can't really play the field) Brett Bateman or I guess Kevin Alcantara if he's somehow still here (can play CF) Ballesteros if he's here to be the default DH guy, otherwise some infield rover Cons: It is very much not Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki and the production would fall off. Probably an infielder short, though we've basically gone four months now without a first base backup, so not that worried. Pros: We'd probably be better against LHP, and it would be incredibly cost efficient, which is good, because we're looking at a rotation that would be average at best if everyone could throw 200 innings, which they likely won't be able to. Hello, Tarik Skubal.

Wonder if Conforto has played himself into a multi year contract, because otherwise he’d be a great addition to the hodgepodge. I generally agree though, unless you get some sort of hometown discount from Ian or seiya, there’s no one out there you really want to commit to long term. If they go that route though, I want a top end starter, or at least two guys at the Steele/horton level of production.

Szymborski at Fangraphs isn't necessarily an insider but has a good sense of relative values and has the Cubs getting Alcantara for Kepley, Reid, and McGwire. I'd prefer a 2 hitter/1 pitcher package over this, but generally this would be more than fine.

yeah you're probably right, Ricketts will lower prices to attend or watch the games if they don't trade for anyone

There's also the DH spot. PCA/Adell/Suzuki/Kelly/Bregman/Busch/Dansby/Nico/Happ is plenty solid, and you can put Shaw or Ramirez out there over Happ to avoid Adell's (very bad) defense. The last part is probably the biggest knock against him. He's got another year of control and is somewhat of a tweener in that he's probably too good of a player to 'only' use as a short side platoon guy (37 HRs last year), but definitely doesn't seem like the kind of guy the Cubs want in the mix given their clear preference for defense and flexibility.

Go get Detmers and Adell. Trade Alcantara, trade one of Shaw/Ramirez, or both I don't care, trade a couple guys from the top 10. Find another cheap starter and the 2026 version of Kittredge. Let Adell feast against lefties (like, say, the Sanchez/Luzurdo combo we might see in a wild card series), let Counsell cook with 2.5 good starters and Brown/Steele/Cabrera all going balls to the wall for extended relief appearances. This is a good horsefeathers team.

Cardinals bullpen is also very bad. Worse K and BB rates, basically just benefitting from Busch being a super pitchers park this year. Maybe the Cardinals can deal with what we dealt with last night, using their top arms to chase a victory and put them in a tough spot the rest of the series.

That probably speaks more to the Cubs luck, but Peterson has gotten some too. Between that and the Cards' .591 OPS over the last 14 games, it's probably premature and he should still be next to get replaced in the rotation, but will definitely appreciate his contributions.

Of course he just got picked off, but.... in 2005 Derrek Lee played 158 games, hit .335 with a 1.080 OPS, good for a 170 wRC. He had 46 home runs and threw in 15 stolen bases on top of all that. PCA passed him yesterday in fWAR.

Baseballreference v fangraphs might be part of my disconnect then. FG has 3.6 in 2024, 3.1 in 2025, and 2.0 thus far this year (projected for another 1.2).

Got it. It's hard for me to believe Zach Neto is worth that kind of haul, but also putting my hand up and saying that I haven't really thought about the non-Trout Angels at all until recently, and even then it was just pitching.

Wait, are you saying that the asking price for a 3 fWAR SS with 3 years of control, with a +30% K rate and a .307 xwOBA, is the #2 prospect in all of baseball (plus more)?
