    Who would you have there? in a perfect world, Castro, but in the world we're in, Barney or Stewart. Like I said though, not a big deal.

    Shows how unreliable Gameday is. They didn't miss by a lot, but they were balls. No one seems to want to be on base tonight. They'd rather get picked off or caught stealing. Gameday is the most accurate way to determine a pitch's location.

Am I reading that wrong? Doesn't that say Soto is below average on sliders? I remember reading an article on Fangraphs last year that Soto and Soriano were in the top 10 for making their living on fastballs. But I agree Soto is probably closer to the slightly above average offensive player and is not trash.

    Yep, it hit the bat. Even if it didn't hit the bat, he went around. Didn't Jeter break his hand/finger/something a couple years back on a check swing which is basically what just happened. technically you're supposed to make an attempt to avoid the pitch in order to be awarded first base too.

    Castro. Dude's gonna go HAM this year. Which means 2nd is the best place for him. Shouldn't 3rd actually be your 4th best hitter? Lineups are never going to be made that way. At least not anytime remotely soon. Good thing it barely matters. And why 4th? Wouldn't it be 3rd, if anything? It's been awhile since I've read The Book, so I may get this wrong. I think it's because the the 3rd hitter in your lineup comes to the plate with nobody on or two outs too frequently, therefore you actually want a better hitter (at least a higher OBP) batting fourth and a slugger (someone like Soriano) batting 3rd.

    I think sitting Berggren for the final 12 minutes of the first half was a bigger error by Bo Ryan than not calling a timeout before that final possession.

    Didn't The Book find that there are clutch hitters (a small increase in wOBA, IIRC less than 1%), but it's almost impossible to determine which hitters are clutch and which are lucky that year due to the small sample sizes.

    Thats what I thought too. They showed it on one angle, I don't think they can review it anyway. Theyre just checking the clock. he did, but it doesn't matter. someone else has to touch it before he can since he was out of bounds.

    He faced eight batters. Struck out one, walked two, hit one, and allowed four balls in play (three hits and an outfield error by Reed Johnson). If there's any sort of a ST competition going on, Wood has pitched himself out of a spot. I hope that's not the case. I think they might use it as an excuse to send him to AAA until the rotation works itself out via injury or trade.

    It was his first inning of work (Wells started), and I think it was just because he was that bad.

    Chris Volstad and Travis Wood are not anywhere near the same palce on the development curve as Jackson or Szczur. The only reasonable comparison is Sappelt. And yes, I'd like to see a veteran moved to get Sappelt everyday playing time. I know. I was just having some fun. Thought the ridiculousness of including Szczur would make it obvious, but apparently not to SSR. Although Travis Wood's performance today isn't very encouraging. I know spring training numbers mean nothing. Hopefully he's trying to work on new grips or something.

    If we're supposed to be building asset value, then we need to be taking guys like them and getting them established in the major leagues. If all they do is play in AAA, they build no trade value and don't improve as hitters. That's true, no AAA player has ever been traded for anything worth having. It just seems a little wasteful. All three of those guys, and maybe even four with Campana, have long-term potential that can be maximized by doing what's best for their development (putting them in the appropriate level of competition). Soriano definitely has more potential trade value than Byrd, and I'd say Dejesus has a lot more potential trade value as well. Byrd just looks like the obvious odd man out to me. He's a one-year placeholder without a ton of upside at his age

    The most important thing is that Brett Jackson needs to be on the 2012 opening day roster, nothing else matters. Byrd's trade value is never going to be significant, and he's got just as much of a chance of tanking it as he does of improving it.
