  1. Disagree. Owen has not been playing up to snuff the entire time, now that England can call up someone new, they will have a full-time striker. Not disagreeing with you, just curious. Who else do they have as options besides Crouch and Rooney? And what do you mean by "call up" - can they drop Owen from the team and bring in somebody else.
  2. There is one exception to this that I can think of and that's when teams used to do the Hack-A-Shaq and would just grab Shaq up until there were two minutes left in the half (when the foul became a shoot the free throws and get the ball back situation) to send him to the line. Shaq often had games where he would shoot 20+ FT's and occasionally had a game with 30+ FTA. He even had a game where he shot an unbelievable 39 FT's against Indiana in Game 2 of the 2000 NBA Finals. I'm not old enough to remember if they did this to Wilt as well but I believe they did IIRC. I believe that Wade broke Bob Petit's record for free throw attempts in an NBA Finals game.....so the numbers go back for a while Basketball-Reference It's the game on 2000-06-09. Wow....that I did not know......thanks.....quite the stat......for some reason I thought the announcers referred to Petit....I must have not been paying attention...thanks for the # I'm a Lakers fan. I remember the Hack-A-Shaq like it was yesterday and figured Shaq had a game of 25 FT's in the finals. I didn't know he had 39 though. That amazed me as well.
  3. I took an Exercize Biology: Sociology of Sport class a couple quarters ago. We were talking about games that are sports and others that are spectacles. The WWE obviously fell in the spectacle category but he said that the NBA is closer to falling into that category than the other "major" sports. I agreed with him then and do even more so now.
  4. I can't wait to hear what Mark Cuban is going to say about this.

  6. lord, the guy cant catch a break can he? Well he can, just not the good kind.

  8. "I want to say something about Dwayne Wade, but I fear I may get called for a foul." - From the Sports Guy emails. Amen.
  9. What about a Game 6 on the road? Not sure on that but the stat I listed above proves my point that Miami needs to win Game 6. I'm not saying they can't win Game 7 on the road, I'm just saying that it's extremely hard.
  10. Time to post the games for Wednesday June 21. We will have the final group stage games for both Groups C and D. Here are the current standings: Group C Team W D L P GS GA GD Argentina 2 0 0 6 8 1 7 Netherlands 2 0 0 6 3 1 2 Ivory Coast 0 0 2 0 2 4 -2 Serbia & Montenegro 0 0 2 0 0 7 -7 Argentina v Netherlands 12 PM PT on ESPN Ivory Coast v Serbia & Montenegro 12 PM PT on ESPN 2 Both Argentina and Netherlands have advanced. Winner takes the group but if they tie, Argentina wins the Group. Ivory Coast and Serbia & Montenegro have been eliminated. Group D Team W D L P GS GA GD Portugal 2 0 0 6 3 0 3 Mexico 1 1 0 4 3 1 2 Angola 0 1 1 1 0 1 -1 Iran 0 0 2 0 1 5 -4 Mexico v Portugal 7 AM PT on ESPN Iran v Angola 7 AM PT on ESPN 2 Portugal has advanced and Iran has been eliminated. Portugal wins the group with a win or a tie. Mexico wins the group with a win but will advance with a tie or a loss and either an Iran victory over or tie with Angola. Angola must win and have Mexico lose to Portugal (not sure on the specifics with the tiebreakers) to have a chance to advance. The winner of Group C will play the runner up of Group D (and vice versa) in the Round of 16.
  11. Losing Owen is not going to help England's chances to win the cup.
  12. Final Group B Standings Team W D L P GS GA GD England 2 1 0 7 5 2 3 Sweden 1 2 0 5 3 2 1 Paraguay 1 0 2 3 2 2 0 Trinidad & Tobago 0 1 2 1 0 4 -4
  13. Final Group A standings: Team W D L P GS GA GD Germany 3 0 0 9 8 2 6 Ecuador 2 0 1 6 5 3 2 Poland 1 0 2 3 2 4 -2 Costa Rica 0 0 3 0 3 9 -6
  14. Just to throw another stat out there from Elias. The last time a team won a Game 7 on the road in the World Series, Stanley Cup Finals, or NBA Finals was 1979 when the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Baltimore Orioles to win the World Series.
  15. Why? So we can trade him? How long is his contract for, and how many starts do you think he'll take away from Marshall? I don't think it would be a bad thing if Miller did take some starts away from Marshall. Marshall was injured most of last year, so it would be good to somewhat limit his pitching this year (much like they did with Prior in 2002 when they shut him down for about the last month). Miller is signed for just this season. Unlike similar situations in previous years (Dempster, Williamson) the Cubs don't have an option on Miller for next year. Partly so Marshall doesn't get worked too hard and partly so we know what he could provide for next year. If he comes back and sucks, it's not a big deal because he's not signed for next year. But if he comes back and plays well, then he could have a spot in the rotation next year and make it easier to let Wood/Maddux go.
  16. Just woke up and I'm not surprised much with Germany being up 3-0 because they're playing at home. Gotta give the home fans a good show.
  17. Thank you for adding that. I'll be sure to add it to the 'looking forward to tomorrow's games' posts for the next 3 days.
  18. Dogs are ruthless when it comes to heckling.
  19. Sorry, trying not to jinx it... to no avail. Don't worry, as I said above, ESPN jinxed him.
  20. And to break the tie. We can't have a game thread of a victory be the shortest thread of the year.
  21. I turned into the game immediately after ESPN says "Matt Cain working on a no-hitter" and Cain promptly gives up a hit.
  22. I don't really have a problem with any of their players.
  23. We are now two games out of last place in the NL.
  24. HEY!! I CARE MORE ABOUT THE CUBS THAN ANYTHING!! IT IS A LOT DIFFERENT IN CHICAGO, WHERE YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH BOTH THE CARDINALS AND WHITE SOX!! OUTSIDE OF CHICAGO, YOU ONLY HAVE TO DEAL W/ THE CARDINALS!! He didn't say that you didn't care about the Cubs. He said that he didn't care about you getting picked on by White Sox and Cardinal fans. There is a big difference. Nobody is questioning loyalty on this board. Calm down and caps are unnecessary. It's a lot different in Chicago, okay. I love the Cubs. I may hate the White Sox's guts, but I hate the Cardinals above all. If the Cubs were in a heated race with the Cardinals, I could care less about the White Sox's position. I'd root for the White Sox over the Cardinals. I'm a Lakers fan and I live in Davis which is 15 minutes from Sacramento. I'm familiar to being in enemy territory. At least you live in the city in which your team plays.
