  1. What the heck?
  2. Shaver works around a leadoff single for a scoreless top of the second. To the bottom of the second, it's scoreless.
  3. I'd be so pissed if I was a Phillies fan.
  4. By the way, it sounds like Soriano is a higher priority for the Angels than Aramis (and Tejada obviously the highest priority if the Angels can still acquire him).
  5. Sounds like the Angels-O's trade is probably dead because Tejada won't sign off on moving to third base and the Angels won't move Kendrick. I guess adding Adenhart is in response to the Angels rejecting Kendrick. I'd take the package if I were the O's, but Tejada has the right to ask for a trade in the offseason and he might do it if he's stuck at third. The Rangers also want Tejada to play third.
  6. Don't worry, unless the Cubs were to miraculously finish the season on a tear, their 1st round pick should be protected. As long as they finish with one of the worst 15 records, they'll get to keep their 1st rounder regardless of how many FA's they sign this offseason. But it would be nice to have a few picks in between the first and fifth rounds this year (though I liked Wilken's strategy for making up those missing picks). Wow, that would be quite a salary for a bench player wouldn't you think? Then again, we are paying Neifi $2.5MM a season, nevermind. Believe it or not, if Walker leaves as a "B", the Cubs have an outside shot at landing a 1st rounder if the team that signs him is drafting anywhere from 16-30 in the 1st round and doesn't sign any other higher rated FA's than Walker. Definitely quite the risk. The Cubs obviously have a better read on Walker than I do, but it sure seems to me like he doesn't want to come back. If that's the case, I don't think it's that big a gamble.
  7. I'd be pissed if I was a Philly fan and the original trade is indeed correct. CJ White and Steven Henry, just so the Phillies don't have to pick up the contract? For Abreu, they should have at least gotten one of Hughes or Tabata, even if they ate part of the contract.
  8. Don't know the answer for certain, but it would seem to make sense that the Cubs would be able to offer arbitration if he became a free agent, just like any other team losing a potential FA. Correct.
  9. how do we figure out what type he would be and what each type fetches? even if a type B they get a sandwich pick, no? Probably all a moot point because in order for the Cubs to get picks, they would have to offer Walker arbitration after this season, possibly putting the Cubs in a position to bring him back next season (assuming of course so one else signs him). I'm not so sure the Cubs would be willing to do that. For what ever reason, it seems like Hendry had been looking to trade him ever since he picked up his option before this season started, but just couldn't get a deal he wanted. Actually, I think that's a gamble the Cubs might take because Walker doesn't seem too keen on staying with the Cubs either. At this point, it's probably going to be worth more to keep him, offer him arbitration (if you have to, do what Tim always says - tell him you'll make him a bench player if he accepts) and get extra picks. As a Type B, the Cubs could get a 2nd or 3rd round pick. That's probably going to be worth more than any prospect(s) the Cubs can get for Walker now.
  10. The reason I'm in favor of trading Maddux is that arbitration for extra draft choices isn't an option at the end of the season. I think it's pretty obvious Hendry won't trade Maddux unless he makes out real well, since he doesn't want to trade an "icon" otherwise. For this reason, I don't think Maddux will be traded, which is a shame. I feel his value to the Cubs youngsters for the next 2 months won't be as much as the players he could fetch in a trade.
  11. Serena, Ryu returned from his sprained ankle and has made two starts for Iowa so far. He has shown no ill-effects from the injury.
  12. problem is, from all indications, noone is offering such a prospect. It was just a hypothetical suggested by TT. If the Cubs need more arms, Guzman, Ryu and Williams are ready to be called up. I think you are confusing the two. I'm pretty sure the years don't matter. this is Williams third option year, so once he's brought up, he must stick. I could be wrong, but I'm almost positive that's how it works. There are exceptions to the rule, and I had confused a few other Cubs who might qualify for the exceptions with Jerome (Aardsma, Guzman and Novoa). My bad. attitude problem or not, I've been sick of waiting for ours for quite some time now and would just as soon trade him. I don't care about his attitude problem. I'd take him in a heartbeat if the Cubs could get him for Maddux, but I'd trade him again in the offseason because I don't like his plate discipline and a few other aspects to his game. I think he'd be a very valuable trading chip to acquire an everyday big leaguer.
  13. He strained his right forearm, no TJS. He's expected back in late August, but probably will be back for the AFL. I'd want him and Kottaras for Aramis...and I'd still prefer trading him to the Angels' system. I hate the thought of trading one of the Cubs 3 above average position players for minor leaguers, no matter how good they are. The Cubs would be counting on Lee coming off an injury, Barrett coming off a career year, and Jim Hendry to fill the OF and rest of the IF with capable bats. I don't like that thought at all. At the very least, if the Cubs trade Aramis, they need to get a guy who has or will likely contribute to the majors next year and be above average at his position. I agree, which is why I prefer Aramis to be traded to Anaheim. If the Cubs are convinced Aramis might not return if/when he opts out, I sure want them exploring trades and getting the best available talent, whether it's in the form of big league ready players or prospects.
  14. An educated guess based on your location, are you referring to Todd Wellemeyer? Yep. Thanks for sharing your insight. It's the second person on here who's mentioned how great Maddux has been. I love the "hot girl in HS" analogy, especially given what Greg does look like.
  15. Not necessarily. A guy can be higher up in the system and just broke out this season. As such, he might not yet on the 40-man. It doesn't matter this season. He can shuttle back and forth between Des Moines and Wrigley as many times as the Cubs want this season. It would matter next season, but I thought I read that there was some loophole that Jerome might qualify for...I think I'm mistaking it for Angel Guzman (due to his injuries). Yeah, I'm referring to the Dodgers' Joel Guzman. He had some unkind words for management when he was demoted.

  17. neither Wells nor Gallagher are on the 40-man. I don't think they could be called up. if I am not mistaken, both Marmol and Marshall are already well beyond their biggest career workload. with Guzman's injury history, I don't think it a good idea to extend him much further as he is well above any workload he has had in recent years. maybe 4-5 starts and I would shut him down (around 140-150 IP). same goes for Ryu. with Hills full workload last year, he's the only one who I wouldn't have a problem with having a slot the rest of the year without over work concerns. again, I only advocate keeping him if trading him does not result in getting something decent back. if you get something decent back, then go with Rusch to save these guys arms. I do not know the status of Williams these days. is he pitching? he is a possability to fill that role, but then you use up his last option and have to 25 man him next year. it is difficult to abuse a staff once rosters expand, if your manager isn't a pitcher abusing bafoon. Dusty wants to win every game. if that means extending Marshall or Marmol to twice his workload of last year, that's exactly what he will do. TT is suggesting that since you're trading Maddux (who is on the 40-man) for someone who isn't on the 40-man, you'd be able to add Wells or Gallagher to the 40-man roster in time for September call-ups. Jerome Williams is indeed pitching and has returned to the Iowa rotation with better results than earlier in the season. Williams has already used his option when he was demoted to the minors, but I thought I read somewhere he might still have one (Craig??).
  18. Man, has Guzman lost favor in LA after the way he handled the demotion. I'd do that trade, but look to deal Guzman in the offseason (something I doubt Hendry would do). By the way, since when is Hemet "LA"? :P
  19. Probable Starters: Iowa: RHP Randy Wells (4-3, 4.15 ERA, 39 IP, overall: 8-5, 2.58 ERA, 101.1 IP) @ RHP Joel Hanrahan (3-1, 5.32 ERA) WT: LHP Chris Shaver (5-7, 2.64 ERA, 109 IP; overall: 5-7, 2.45 ERA, 117.2 IP) vs. RHP Garrett Mock (4-8 4.73 ERA) Peoria: LHP Jesus Yepez (4-6, 3.43 ERA, 105 IP) @ RHP Zach Ward (7-0, 2.29 ERA) Boise: RHP Mike Billek (1-1, 7.20 ERA, 30 IP; overall: 5-7, 6.91 ERA, 83.1 IP) vs. LHP Ben Snyder (1-1, 3.20 ERA)
  20. I can't blame him for wanting to get off of this sinking ship. I'd probably do the same in his situation. Why spend the prime of his career in baseball hell? Even if he likes playing for the Cubs and the Cubs were good, opting out would make sense for him (or, as Serena said, threatening to opt out so he can get a better deal). He can get much more on the open market.
  21. The I-Cubs have scored one in the top of the 9th on a Felix Pie RBI single. They're still down 6-4, with runners at the corners at 2 outs. Fontenot grounds out to end the game, Iowa loses. :(
  22. Iowa now down 5-3 in the bottom of the 8th. David Aardsma gave up a couple of singles and then commited a throwing error on a sac bunt that allowed one run to score. Clay Rapada is now coming in to relieve Aardsma. Las Vegas gets one more, according to Gameday: "Jeff Duncan flies into sacrifice double play, center fielder Felix Pie to third baseman Casey McGehee. Oscar Robles scores. Edwin Bellorin out at 3rd." It's 6-3, going to the 9th inning.
  23. A 7th inning RBI single by Luis Montanez scored Augie Ojeda to give Iowa a 3-2 lead. They're now in the bottom of the 7th. Mesa is down 2-1 after 8. Robert Hernandez have given up 1 ER in 2 innings of work. Drew Rundle hit a solo HR, his first pro HR! He's now 2/4 with a double, solo HR and 2 Ks.

  25. Last chance for Boise, down 7-4 in the bottom of the 9th inning. Steve Clevenger leads off the inning with a stand-up triple! Elvin Puello strikes out swinging. Pinch hitter Mario Mercedes grounds out, 6-3. Clevenger scores to make it 7-5. Matt Camp grounds out, 5-3. Boise loses 7-5. Tyler Colvin ends up going 1/4 with that RBI single and 2 strikeouts.
