  1. Not surprising, but Dylan Johnston is out for the season with that ankle sprain of his. Billy Petrick might come off the DL as early as tomorrow.
  2. No, there was never a new contract after he failed the physical.
  3. After Ryan's hot July and August, that won't happen till at least midway through 2008. I'm sure he's earned a few chances at AA in the Cubs' eyes now. It was more of talk here anyways, but even if Ryan had continued to hit .200, I don't think he'd have converted after this season.
  4. Dang, Cal is starting to get too much love from the national media...
  5. Yeah. I think that's twice in a row too, isn't it? So much for the error-less streak  Yeah, I typed it wrong on my spreadsheet and forgot to fix it when I made the mistake last time.
  6. From Kevin Goldstein's BP chat today, not Cub-related, but on international scouting:
  7. Kevin Goldstein chat on BP:
  8. The concern is with his bat, his defense is fine so the Jeter comparison is pointless. RBI totals are not a good way to judge a player, even more so in the minors than the majors. Howard had much better plate discipline and wasn't killed by breaking pitches low and away. Despite Harvey's good play of late, his plate discipline has been bad and he hasn't shown much improvement on said breaking pitches. He's going to be eaten alive at AA (the SL is another pitcher's league) with smarter, better pitchers. His power is fantastic, but he's not much of a prospect if he doesn't make more contact (and start laying off on the pitches he can't hit).
  9. Wow - those are some serious home-away splits. I had been looking at Craig's and thought they were pretty dramatic (962/700 OPS) , but Harvey really likes that home cooking (902/527 OPS). I know the FSL is considered a strong pitcher's league, maybe Daytona is just an average park. Shorter distance down the lines and to straight away LF and RF at Jackie Robinson than most any other FSL ballpark. But the onshore breezes can also have a negative effect on hitters at the Jack.
  10. They're taking a good approach. I'm not surprised, given that they ruled out promoting him to the Reds despite Cincinnati being in the race.
  11. Neifi for Jordan Tata! Heck, Neifi for a PTBNL...wait a year and have that PTBNL be Andrew Miller. :)
  12. There's no way Ryan can keep that .382 BA. Hopefully this hot streak is at least partially due to the change in his swing so when he cools down, he doesn't return to the sub-.200 BAs of April and May.
  13. They'll start him at AA. I'd start him at Daytona and be ready with a quick promotion.
  14. Wade Miller only topped out in the mid-80s at Round Rock yesterday:
  15. Oh, gotcha. I say leave it for now since Veal and Pawelek made the cutoff. What you did is good for premium material that is below the cutoff.
  16. Pawelek's season has been disappointing, but he's still a solid prospect with high upside (as Goldstein has mentioned) and has turned it around the past month. He was supposed to start the season in Peoria but ended up in extended because he showed up out of shape and didn't impress in ST. Then, he starts his Boise season with Rick Ankiel-like control and gets sent to the bullpen in favor of the likes of Billy Muldowney. But he's worked closely with his pitching coach in Boise (David Rosario) on repeating his deliver and mechanics (what was he working on in Mesa?) and his control has improved greatly. He's been great since returning to the rotation (28.1 IP, 1.59 ERA, 27 Ks, 8 BBs). If he keeps that up the rest of the way, I can't really be disappointed.
  17. Harvey's BB/K rate continues to be horrid during his hot stretch, which is very disappointing. In fact, it got worse in July (2/29 when he was hitting .305) before improving halfway through August. The one good thing I keep hearing and reading about is that his turnaround has coincided with a new, shorter swing. He has needed to do that for a long time now. Perhaps that's the first step in an all around improvement. I'm still not confident he won't be a AA flameout...
  18. It should be fine to post it since it's not premium material. Frankly, I'm a bit surprised Kershaw is that high after 36 GCL innings.
  19. You're sure because of what? I think his problem was strictly rushing back from a broken wrist. All baseball players will go through rough stretches where mental struggles play a role. Derrek Lee included. Glendon Rusch is the same. All Mark Prior did was admit it. If he wasn't affected by his poor play, something would be wrong. Rough stretches? Yes. Rough years? No. There have been many, many people questioning Prior's heart and mental state from game 6 thru today. Maybe they're right or maybe they're wrong. But I believe Prior admitted to it last year, as well. I hope they were questioning it when Mark came back earlier than expected from a broken elbow last season.
  20. Since July 21st, Rafael Dolis has had 5 appearances: 12.2 IP, 5 ER, 8 H, 3.55 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, .178 BAA, 16 Ks, 3 BBs. Mark Pawelek was reinserted into Boise's starting rotation on July 16th and has had 6 starts since. In that time, he's pitched in 28.1 innings: 5 ER, 19 H, 1.59 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, .184 BAA, 27 Ks, 8 BBs, 5 HBPs. Since July 14th, Mitch Atkins has made 5 starts: 28 IP, 4 ER, 19 H, 1.33 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, .190 BAA, 22 Ks, 9 BBs.
  21. Probable Starters: Iowa: LHP Sean Marshall (rehab; 0-1, 6.00 ERA) @ RHP T. Buchholz (0-2, 6.75 ERA) West Tenn: LHP Issac Pavlik (1-0, 1.89 ERA) vs. LHP Sean Thompson (5-9, 3.46 ERA) Daytona: RHP Justin Berg (6-6, 4.50 ERA) Peoria: RHP Mitch Atkins (11-3, 2.41 ERA) @ RHP Marwin Vega (4-8, 5.74 ERA) Boise: LHP Mark Pawelek (2-4, 2.66 ERA, 40.2 IP, 35/16, 11 HBP, 1.23 WHIP) Mesa: RHP Rafael Dolis (0-1, 7.71 ERA) *Take Mesa's probable starter with a grain of salt as they shuffle their pitchers around with frequency. Marshall: 3 IP, 2/5, 2.33 WHIP Pavlik: 19 IP, 13/6, 1.05 WHIP Berg: 102 IP, 77/47, 1.54 WHIP Atkins: 119.2 IP, 105/47, 1.18 WHIP Pawelek: 40.2 IP, 35/16, 1.23 WHIP Dolis: 21 IP, 28/14, 1.81 WHIP
  22. No prob, and thanks to a bunch of others who do the same (Flames24Rulz, Jon, Serena, texascub, and others who I might have forgotten) plus everything Outshined does. ------- Mesa loses 2-0. Cuevas-Novas went the last 3 innings, giving up a solo inside-the-park HR. His final line was 3 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. The Scottsdale Giants' starting pitcher, Manuel Cabeza (insert a joke about Felix Foot and Manuel Head here), went 7 one-hit innings with 6 Ks. The Cubs managed just 3 hits overall - the one by Rosario to break up the no-hitter, along with one by Valerio Heredia and one by Carlos Perez. Drew Rundle is 0 for 4 with 3 Ks (but reached on the first strikeout, via the ol' strikeout wild pitch). Cliff Andersen went 0 for 3 with just one strikeout.

  24. Thanks, KC. I saw him pitch last spring and thought he was great. :(
