  1. I like the second article, Tim.
  2. I'm wondering if this stuff transfers over to the new CBA, though. The classifications don't apply to the CBA, but either way, it came out after the new CBA.
  3. I've read on another board that Kaplan also said that the Japanese team might think the BoSox offer is fishy (blocking another team or something), and might take the 2nd highest bid, which he said the Cubs would stand much more of a chance then. Did he mention this? 24 still wouldn't beat Texas or NY, but it gives us a little more hope. Seibu only got the dollar value of the highest bidder, they don't know what team made that bid. They can think the bid is fishy, but they'd have to bring it up with MLB.
  4. Fair enough. Try this out for size, from Jim Callis of BA:
  5. Checked the mentioned station and it was in fact LA's ESPN Radio (710 AM). The poster also had like 700 posts so it doesn't look like he's a random newbie troll. He also mentioned they said that it could be done by tonight, and that yesterday they said ARam wasn't coming back for sure so to take them with a grain of salt or something. Thanks for the heads up, will listen to 710 (though I'm sure it's wall-to-wall NFL coverage despite no NFL teams in LA).
  6. Great avatar. http://reds.enquirer.com/2003/10/12/nlcs_150x200.jpg
  7. Quoting myself since too many posts past to edit... Since Wood is back and likely in the pen, what about a Jones+Dempster for Hudson deal? Atlanta gets rid of any '09 obligation, as well as at least 10 million total salary, plus a serviceable OF and a bullpen project like they've taken on before(Sosa, Reitsma, etc). A Zambrano, Schmidt, Hudson, Hill, Prior/Miller/youngster rotation would be fun. I know you've been advocating Hudson because his cumulative peripherals in 06 werent a ton different than 05, but I thought when we dug deeper, it looked like 05 was more of a lucky year than 06 being unlucky? I agree, I'm afraid of Hudson going forward.
  8. I'm guessing most of them would have gotten drunk irregardless and just checked NSBB because they knew the pending deadline. Normally they'd be wiser than to check out NSBB while drunk. Your mom would be disappointed in you. :( Oh hush up, it was a typo!
  9. Woot, UCLA clinging in there in the top 50! Guess those moral victories do add up. Keep it up, Dorrell.
  10. This is something that Cuse said in last weeks thread, but i wanted to bring the discussion over here. This is one of my main problems with the polling system. Earlier in the season, Florida's wins over Auburn, Tennessee and LSU looked really, impressive (not that they still arent quality wins, just some of the shine has been taken off.) Anyway, those wins look great, so Florida is highly ranked. Now, those teams lose a few more games, and the wins don't look as good. But what can you do if Florida doesn't lose? Florida's ranking is based on the strength of those wins, and they won't fall in the rankings unless they lose, no matter if Auburn, Tennessee and LSU lose every remaining game. Now, I'm not singling out Florida here, just using them as an example. Nice post, I think most (if not all) of us agree.
  11. Unless the Cubs have really changed their philosophy they will do what they normally do and wait until he is fully off the cliff and then run him out of town while picking up most of what's left of his contract. Correct.
  12. I'm guessing most of them would have gotten drunk irregardless and just checked NSBB because they knew the pending deadline. Normally they'd be wiser than to check out NSBB while drunk.
  13. I think you could apply that to just about every sports peson that has reported on the negiogiations. Yup. I think they were the two most recent ones, though.
  14. 1. JD Drew - CF 2. Assuming Daisuke isn't going to be a Cub, Jason Schmidt. 3. Ray Durham or Akinori Iwamura - 2B 4. Maybe a bottom of the rotation starter if he comes cheap (Kei Igawa?). Explore Miguel Cabrerra trade possibilities (don't think the Cubs have the assets for it). Extend Z.
  15. Alas, this does mean the Cubs can sign one fewer Type A free agent.
  16. Quick, take the article down, Tim! ;)
  17. So mlbtraderumors.com (5/90) and Phil Rogers (5/73 - might still be close) were both wrong? Shocking!
  18. http://www.latimes.com/sports/baseball/mlb/dodgers/la-sp-simers12nov12,1,6759741.column?coll=la-headlines-sports-mlb-dodger This guy makes Drew out to be very, very soft. It's TJ Simers. You'd be better off listening to the opposite of everything he writes. And JD Drew isn't friends with the LA media, especially the newspapers, so they don't going to like him much.
  19. Yeah, the Cubs still have a chance to re-sign Aramis. But if 5/$73 was their best offer when they had exclusive rights to talk to him and now the Angels, Dodgers and Red Sox have a chance, the Cubs really have little shot at re-signing him. The offense was horrible last year. And then they lost their one consistant, good run producer. The Cubs can recover with some great trades and free agent signings...but there aren't enough assets to swing any of those trades and if the Cubs aren't willing to top 5/$73M for the best free agent of the class, they probably aren't going to do that for others who might be worth it too. Hendry should blow it all up because that should be the best way for the Cubs to to emerge as a contender down the road. Of course, Hendry's job is on the line so he won't do that. But the way Hendry has acted, maybe his job isn't on the line?
  20. I think I can break this down. •our exclusive negotiating window w/ ARam has closed. •Hendry may have never gotten past a paltry 5/73. •In a preemtptive strike against fan apathy, John McDonough set into motion a plan that will invite additional guest singers between the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th innings of every home game. •It was revelaed that Jim Hendry, due to anatomical shortcomings, is invulnerable to a swift kick to the "charlie brown." •The news had stunning, dramatic effects on NSBB posters. •USSoccer climbed into a full bathtub while holding his plugged-in toaster. •O_O reached new levels of anger for him, which is roughly 1/4 as angry as Gooney is on any given day. •OleMiss converted to radical Islam; JR bought a Prius •Treeman injected heroin into his forehead on Hendry's doorstep. He is now dead. •Sethuel tried to do so as well, but the needle didn't penetrate the six-inch layer of vomit covering his face. A full recovery is excpected. •ndistops bought a 6-pack and passed out 3/4 of the way through the first can. It should be noted it was a 6-pack of cream soda. •The angels or dodgers will swoop in and compensate ARam fairly. •One of Scott Brosius/Shane Andrews/Kevin Orie/Steve Buechele will be ARAM's replacement. •Last year's team will soon look like a juggernaut compared to waht we're going to assemble. •All hope is lost. hope that helps. Awesome.

  23. I hate the Cubs. I've been drinking, so I'm not sure, but am I reading that right? 73M for 5 years? That comes out to 14.6M a year. 14M should have been where they started when he opted out of the contract, not just south of where they ended! Yeah, that works out to 5/$73 M. Not even an average of $15 M a year. Awful.
