  1. Coulda saved the $4 M and added a bit more for a guy like Durham or Loretta. You don't think the difference is going to so to Soriano or pitchers? It might, but I think that in the end, the Cubs won't be able to afford Soriano.

  3. No financial details? nope, all that was said was three years. i am checking around and don't see it anywhere else but it was on the update i promise you. I don't doubt it, Hendry has shown interest in DeRosa before Aramis re-signed. Meh. I was hoping for Durham or Loretta for 2B (I figured the Cubs weren't interested in Iwamura). I'll hold of judgement till I hear the financial details.
  4. I'm intrigued by Jennings, but the Cubs have ery limited tradable assets that can net good players, so I'm not that interested.
  5. Nobody is saying that, though. This is how you avoid disaster contracts like the Yankees are saddled with right now, and like we have been in the past. You don't sign a 30 year old guy (outside of a real superstar like an ARod or Pujols) coming off a career year to a big money long-term contract. so are you against signing Lee, Soriano and/or Drew? All will get multiple years and all are over 30 Soriano and Drew might play positions of need, but yes, I'm wary of all three (Drew: injury history; Soriano: contract year?). But both are less likely to need to be DHing in 2-3 years.
  6. Rex's good play also coincided with when the OL started to actually block and Jones actually started getting yards - the reasons I think Rex played better. I'm sure the improving weather didn't hurt, but to chalk it up just to the weather when there are other reasons (which you don't at the end of this post) isn't the right thing to do.
  7. Heard from where? Davhearn said it on the last page telling me that pujols, howard, etc. beg to differ about older players having pop. I think he was talking about how you "heard" that power hitters peak at age 32. Yes, that's what I was wondering, rjchapma.
  8. Well, players *do* decline in their 30s after career years in their late 20s and even early 30s. Lee won't have the benefit of steroids/HGH to help him later on, and quite frankly, Carlos Lee doesn't seem to be the type of guy who's a gym rat - a feature that is needed for most players to keep going at career high levels well into their 30s. then Sabathia, Zambrano, etc. will all suck soon too? Why are you using the word suck? That's dishonest. Decline does not mean suck. Besides, pitchers peak years are a completely different story than than hitters. Oh, I didn't even notice he used "suck."
  9. You have got to be kidding. Minaya sucks to even be thinking of that.

  11. Of course if it's snowy and bad weather for the Bears, the other team's QB will still be playing in sunny, clear weather. EDIT: This means the OL doesn't like to block when it's rainy.

  13. Lee had career highs in HR, RBI and SLG this year. Clearly on the decline He did? He did have career highs in HR, RBI (team stat, who cares?) and SLG. Then again, he played 40% of last season in Texas.
  14. No, don't you see? Once baseball players hit the mythic age of 32, they automatically go down every year (even when they don't) You think Lee is going to improve as he ages? He's not the athlete/fitness freak that guys like Bonds are.
  15. Why? Are you telling me that guys like Pujols, Miguel Cabrera, etc. were worse than good veteran players after their first full season? Why can't Lee be on the decline? He's 30, overweight and will soon need to DH. On the flip side, Murton can be had for less than a million dollars for the next few years, allowing the Cubs to fill other holes in the team. Why are we supposed to ignore Murton vs. Lee in the second half? Because you guy didn't perform as well, despite playing in the hitter's haven that is the Ballpark in Arlington?
  16. Hoffman second!?
  17. About time. The city of Glendale, AZ and the Dodgers were dragging it out and that wasn't really fair to Vero Beach. EDIT: Never mind, apparently they're in "negotiations" with the city of Glendale. They've been in negotiations since last spring.
  18. I truly hope that Hendry is not counting on any of the above named pitchers to start the season in the rotation. Last year they all proved that they weren't ready quite yet. next year isn't last year. Next year isn't a good year to put those guys back into prominent roles either. They stunk. And will most likely continue to stink, as none of them showed any sort of progress as the year went on. I can see Guzman making the leap with the added year. His performance showed he hadn't piched regularly in 2.5 years (much worse command, control, no sink on his pitches) and I think that's something that could come after the offseason. Marshall really struggled (dramatically worse control, HRs given up) and got worse as the season went on. I think Mateo is a reliever, Marmol needs to improve his control in the minors and might be best served in the pen, O'Malley is no one to get excited about. Anyone I forgot?
  19. Your memory serves you correctly, splendid splinter.
  20. I'd prefer to keep Ohman and trade Eyre. Simple economics. me too. if they trade eyre, they can use ohman & rapada as the lefties out of the pen. Me three.
