  1. Sigh, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute out for the game today with a sprained knee. :( Fellow Cameroonian Alfred Aboya or freshman James Keefe should start.
  2. Yeah, USC has played real well this year - beat Wichita State (without Gabe Pruitt), they are the only team to beat Oregon and they also beat Arizona. Their two Pac-10 losses are close ones to Washington State and UCLA...not too shabby.
  3. Anyone going to the "Down on the Farm" segment which I assume will be tomorrow?
  4. Dontrelle cracked their top-100 list once, in 2003 at #43. Garland also only cracked the list once, at #32 in 2000. Neither made it as Cubs.
  5. Navegantes lose 4-3 in 10 innings, box: 1B T. Pérez 0/2, R, RBI Leones lose 3-0, box: C H. Blanco DNP Overall (Playoffs): Tomás Pérez (Navegantes): 12/51, .235/.293/.294/.587, 5 BB, 6 K, 3 2B, 0/1 SB, 1 E
  6. Culiacan lost 2-1, box, best-of-seven series tied 3-3: 3B C. McGehee 0/4 Playoffs: 9/43, .209/.333/.302/.635, 4 2B, 9 K, 8 BB, 3 E Regular Season: 74/247, .300/.365/.425/.790, 7 HR, 10 2B, 27 BB, 33 K, 1/3 SB, 11 E
  7. Licey lost 9-3: RP C. Marmol 2 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 3 K/1 BB - relieved starter Lindsay Gulin after Gulin let the first 5 batters score RP J. Mateo 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 K/0 BB Overall: Carlos Marmol (Licey): 13.1 IP, 13 ER, 18 H, 13 K/5 BB, 1 HR, 8.78 ERA, 1.73 WHIP Juan Mateo (Licey): 12 IP, 2 ER, 10 H, 10 K/2 BB, 2 HR, 1.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP
  8. Ryu is a shell of himself, he was a potential top-100 in baseball prospect who's lucky if he cracks top 10 Cubs lists. Guzman is still a potential front of the rotation starter despite the injuries. Piggy shouldn't be in the same group.
  9. He's up there in terms of having the highest pure ceiling along with guys like Pawelek, Ceda, Huseby, and Veal. I'm hesitant to put him above Veal ceiling-wise, but that's about it. As for being the best prospect, nah. I want to see what he can do over a full season before going as far as that. Ceda is a couple steps behind the others there in terms of ceiling. Best pitching prospect? 1. Veal, 2. Gallagher, 3. Samardzija. In terms of highest ceiling, I guess it comes down to how much you value left-handedness. :)
  10. Kudos to Raisin for the list: Made it to the majors but never lived up to the hype: Juan Cruz, Andy Sisco, Jae-Kuk Ryu Never made it to the majors: Bobby Brownlie, Luke Hagerty, Chadd Blasko, Matt Clanton, Justin Jones, Ben Christiensen Wild Card: Angel Guzman, Billy Petrick Sweet, I get kudos! From nilo's list, you can add Dontrelle to the success stories. I don't think the rest were ever thought of as highly as the ones I mentioned or the ones GilesBros mentions (maybe Pinto).
  11. ...and Pie with almost every minor league team he was on. Mesa, Boise, Peoria, Daytona all won championships, WT lost in the finals (with Pie hurt) and Iowa finished a game out of the playoffs. Not too shabby. Holy crap.
  12. #1 (not counting Guzman). Higher ceiling than Veal. Pawelek too? I think he has a higher ceiling than Pawelek (and I'm probably not as down on Mark as others). I could see arguments for Jeff being ranked below Veal and Gallagher, even Pawelek.
  13. He'll start, esp in the lower minors (to get more IP). His second pitch is his slider, third is his quickly developing change. All three have potential to be plus pitches.
  14. I'm hoping he projects as a starter. We could use a few good men in the rotation. For now, he's a starter. And all 3 of his pitches have the potential to plus pitches.
  15. I had heard elsewhere that Samardzija didn't have good movement on his FB. I'd like to believe cubs.com, but I believe they're tooting their own guy's horn right here. Larry Suarez was supposedly in Mesa for Instructs this past fall (though I didn't read anything about him actually being there). I think he'll end up on the Cubs' Dominican squad this summer, Mesa the season after.
  16. Why wait a year to deem how worthy a prospect is of a particular ranking? The ranking is based on his scouting report and how one thinks he will turn out as of now. He might be 21 in A-ball, but he has had much less experience and coaching than your normal 21-year old.
  17. Come on people, do your research.
  18. NFL scouts were actually disappointed with his weight (for a better word) because he wasn't able to keep his normal summer lifting for football because he was in Boise and Peoria. Shouldn't be a big concern long term. I have no problem with him having a NTC.
  19. For Jeff at least. We won't know if it pays off for the Cubs for several years. That's a ton of scratch, and reportedly a NTC as well, which takes away a huge amount of any prospects value. They're able to take a 1st round projection who at the time was considered a more likely bet for FB rather than BB and select him in the 5th round and able to sign him while getting starts at SS and low-A, that's a success, IMO. Not many teams would've done the work or used the resources to find out what his intentions truly were and then to actually take that chance is something that doesn't happen that often. It's similar to when teams draft a player lower than he is slotted and while signing him higher than the slotted pick (Eric Patterson or Hellickson from TB come to mind), is able to prevent him from going to school or going back to school. In this case, it involves not only school and cont. to play BB, but obviously FB as well. Even if Patterson doesn't pan out, the inital aspect of being able to draft and more imp. sign someone with that ceiling is a success. They also did their homework on Huseby and Rundle's intentions. The area scouts did a great job.
  20. Henceforth, Katrina is off limits in this thread.
