  1. Wow, I can't believe some of the posts here. The love for Van Buren I can understand. Its easy to get excited about minor league numbers. I don't get the hate for Ciarmella. Right after being drafted he went to low A, (pretty impressive they thought him ready for that right away) and apparantly struggled because of injuries. He came back last year and after what looks like a short rehad stint in rookie ball, goes right to high A and puts up a very respectable .302 .360 .422 average. He'll be 23 years old and likey at AA. Thats where Matt Murton was last year. Based on reports he has at least 3 strong tools- average power speed- and is athletic, fundamentally sound, trong, and intelligent. He wil require a spot on the 40man next year, but if he can put up another stronf season at AA he will warrant it. Settle down, and enjoy the new year.
  2. LOLOLOLOL Why are people stupid?
  3. Well, they did draft a 2B in the Rule V draft. Someone from the DBacks organization. Even though they are my hometown team, I cannot remember which guy it was. Anyway... can't imagine that they'd draft a guy to sit him for a full season behind pokey. Fine then Pokey can backup. Bottom line is they need veteran presence. Think of it as Antionio Davis/Adrian Griffin/Eric Piakowski for the Bulls last year. If you don't follow the Bulls then I don't know what to tel you. But especially AD was huge in leading that team. And even though they had a guy, in Tyon Chandler with nice potential, he sat behind him on the bench behind him. Its a little different in basketball where a lot of guys see the court anyway and you can sub in and out as much as you need, but the point remains, veteran presence is a need over there. All but about 5 guys were born in 1980 or later.
  4. Is any one besides Ramirez a top middle inffield prospect currently? Looking at their 40 man roster, nobody look like the guy you don't wanna block. So why not have a veteran presence and let him compete for the job. They need SOME veteran presence. It would hurt all those young guys in such a clubhouse. I don't know how well Borowski will do, but with the way contracts have been handed out this offseason to relievers, hes probably one of the better veteran pitching influences they could get a a decent price. And if there was someone who could relate to the young guys when times get rough, it would be him.
  5. Being that I already gave up on this year I'm curious about next years rule 5... Based on my limited knowledge, I think the following players might be first time eligible: Patterson Johnson Harvey Reed Gallagher? Fuld I'm i correct? Any other noticables? The possibility of losing Gallagher scares me the most.
  6. You're probably right, but that $6 million is still significant. Even if they could fit him, I think if we could give them a worthy replacement in Walker/Hairston and bullpen depth like Wuertz/Williamson and some cash it'd be a good start with what they want in a prospect(s) to be decided. Now, I'm not giving them Pie of course but I'd be willing to "overpay" if it made their decision easier. Even if they can afford him in 2006, can they afford him any longer than that? Or is he simply unavailable now? I might consider giving up Pie. I'd try to avoid it, and there are players I'd rather have if possible, but Gileswould be a nice ickup if we coul sign him to a long deal to ensre he'd be around. Only 27-28 yrs old. .290 avg .360 obp .460 slg.... Pie would be about all going their way besides couple of below avg/marginal prospecs and I would want some type of decent prospect heading ur way, but I'd consider it. Of course Walker offers close numbers, but we all know how much Henrdy seems to want to trade Walker.
  7. If he is available that would be great. I'm guessing it is not likely though.
  8. Probably would have to throw in Murton too, which would be fine, of course. We could also send them an extra arm such as Wellymeyer if they so desire. But I wont get my hopes up. Rather than throw in Murton, I'd try to take back Milton which would get them out of that contract. But what use would we have with Murton? Like it or not, we are stuck with Jones.

  10. I'd prefer he just stuck with Walker... SIGH....
  11. Except Perez for Walker and either him or Jones hitting in the two hole. Thats more likely. And what about Gonzo requiring an extension to 2007 in order to waive his no trade rights? Meh. Hendry needs to think even more creative.
  12. Well if we could assume Wood would be healthy than yea, its simple. I personally don't want to count on it. If it happens then we are even better.
  13. Or just not excercise his option after this year. Even simpler than a trade!
  14. Other average teams got lucky why can't we! Also despite the .251 avg Rdriguez slugged .530 with 31 HR. His OBP was a below average at .334, but thats certianly better than Jones and most likey Burnitz Also Johnson hit .280 .335 .352 Comparable to what we could expect from Pierre (a little less OBP) Then you throw in Sammy's ridiculous stats and even that OF blows away one of Pierre/Jones/Burnitz The point is an above average outfield does not a World Championship make. Pitching and being 'strong up the middle' seems to be the championship rhetoric of the past 5-10 years. Good point, but even with Prior your rotation is still pretty qustionable after him and Z, by questionable, I mean, can they pull a White Sox or close?(thats what it would likely take) Then you praised the IF, but if we are gonna be "strong up the middle" it will mean Perez, not Walker. Still a good IF, but Perez hurts it a lot.

His OBP was a below average at .334, but thats certianly better than Jones and most likey Burnitz Also Johnson hit .280 .335 .352 Comparable to what we could expect from Pierre (a little less OBP-Pierre you could expect .350-others might say less tho) Then you throw in Sammy's ridiculous stats and even that OF blows away one of Pierre/Jones/Burnitz
  16. I might also add that the reason that Vance- and followers of his theory such as myself, liked the idea of Wade so much was as a closer, becaus of his first inning splits. Say you can lock down the rotation other ways, and could have a dominating 8-9 of Wade-Dempster. Hope the Wuertz becomes a dominatig 7th inning guy and you are set. Or you could still have Wade the good/possibly awesome starter. I love the idea. Please don't be just a rumor.
  17. CF- Pierre LF-Jones 1B-Lee SS-Tejada RF-Burnitz 3B-Ramirez 2B-Perez C-Barret EDIT- Walker clearly gets traded then for some crap lefty reliever or something, and Cedeno rides the bench. Even if Walker stays, Dusty still hits him 7th, minimizing his value. Only gots to have speed at the top of the order dude. No Pie or Murton in sight to help the OF :( That being said, I find it highly unlikely that such a deal would occur.
  18. First I have to say I do like the idea of getting Wade. Secondly in hopes to answer my own question I have tried to put a possilbe scenario for a rule 5 crunch that someare worried about. First it appeared I underestimated how soon guys are rule 5 eligible a bit. Here is a possible 40 man roster after next offseason Prior Zambrano Wade(for sake of this thread) Williams Hill Dempster Wuertz Howry Eyre Guzman Novoa Ohman Marshall Marmol Ryu Barrett Soto Reyes Lee Cedeno Perez Ramirez Theriot Moore Murton Pie Pierre Jones Thats 28 guys who would likely be on it. So you have room for 12 spots. With those guys listed you're major league pitching is likely set maybe an arm or two to sing in FA. We'll be safe and say 2. So you have 10 spots. I would say four of those would have to go towards filling out positional players for the major league team, FA signings. Then your major league roster is set and you have at least 6 spots, maybe more if say Theriot could be ready as a backup or you dont need to sign another pitcher. Those 6 spots could go to 1-Harvey 2-Gallagher(if he even has to be at that point) 3-EPatterson 4-Sing(although if he is on the 40man hopefully he is ready for a big league role, he'll be old 27 i think) 5-Brownlie? 6-Johnson From the looks of it, no one left unprotected, Reed for example would be ready anyway. Different prospects will emerge and fall along the way as well. But it looks like you would only have to expose som pretty low-risk guys, like we always have to. No Siscos bein left unprotected. Keeping in mind also we could see guys like Novoa/Williams traded in order to gain spots. In fact one of Novoa/Wiliams/Guzman/Ohman woul probably HAVE to be gotten rid of, its likely one will do it himself based on performance or health. If not you trade the worst for a minor leaguer not rule 5 eligible. So in conlcusion I don't see why we can't get Wade. The 40man shouldn't be that much of an issue.
  19. Who would we have to worry about losing to rule 5 next year? Guys who lasted this year(notable ones) Brownlie Sing Fox Petrik Blasko Connoly Hagerty Some of those guys have some major injury issues they would have to get past. Others probably don't have the talent to stick. I'm unlcear about the rules of rule 5 eligiibility, but I cant find many guys of great importance who seem to have been around long enough to warrant a spot. Harvey maybe? Guys drafted out of college in 04 would be too soo, right? Any minor league experts who could clar that up would be great. But at a quick glance it doesn't look like a lot. Then theres the issue of guys who have been on for 3 years and would have to make the big league roster. Aardsma? Guzman Everyone else looks like the will be established going into this year (Cedeno/Wuertz) So at most you have 4 spots that might need to be cleared for guys that are must keeps. Doesn't seem like too much of a problem. That is unless of course I am missing a bunch of newly elgible guys for 2006, which I might be. This discussion would be a lot easier if I/we knew for sure who was gonna be eligible. Bottom line: I'm not too worried about a rule 5 crunch.
  20. I vote for this instead of Prior-Tejada. Pierre Walker (let me dream) Lee Aramis Gonzo Barrett Jones Cedeno With Murton as the 4th OF. Thats a solid line-up. Add in Prior, Z, Wood, Maddux, Williams/Hill/Guzman/Rusch. Add Dempster/Howry/Eyre/Ohman/Wuertz and I think we have a winner. That is simply a better team than one with Tejada and without Prior. If Dusty had that he'd probably would switch Walker and Jones. And regarding the deal, I don't see i happening now. Our outfield looks set as is. However if the deal did go through, I would tell Arizona to keep their money and we'll take Quentin, plus throw i something like Harvey. Sure there would be a bit of a logjamin the OF, but thats a good problem to have right? Eventually Jones just becomes a very epensive backup. OF-Pierre(I'm just assuming he'll stay), Pie, Quentin. Murton is eventually used as a trade chip for something, otherwise he could go to LF an let Pierre walk. Okay I'll stop dreaming now.
  21. Nothin new really. Levine believes pitching would be to mch of a question mark to say whether we could compete for division. Called Tejada a top 3 to 4 player in the game.
  22. Levine doesn't think Prior would like to leave Chicago. Would be upset after a trade. Seemed like speculation rather than knowledge.
  23. That is encouraging. However, I don't think anone believes Hendry actually looed at such a stat when aquiring Eyre. We lucked into having a guy with promsing stats. It would be much more encouaging if we had reason to believe that this would be a trend to look for.
  24. I'm speechless. I simply cannot believe this. Someone mentioned flooding Hendry's email with mail of displeasure. safer bet may be to flood Angelos mailbox preteding to be angry Orioles fans. "You're gonna trade an former MVP for some overhyped injury prone pitcher?" and the like.
  25. I was a big critic of the 40 man before too. Fact is we only lost one guy to the big league portion, and hes not likley to stick. So I would listen to arguements for why we left Macias on. Beyond that, we didn't lose anyone, so in that case it looks like Hendry wasn't wrong. You may say hindsight is 20/20, but I'm sur during those fall meetings that seem to be useless Hendry is out there gauging interest. Also has it been determined yet we traded Van Beuren for "peanuts"? We still get a PTBN right? (this is an honest question) Maybe that player will be better than we expect.
