Yeah, looking back at all the guys we could've had who have gone on to great productive careers, I can't help but wonder if they'd have those careers coming up through one of the worst player development systems in the league Anaheim is not exactly a forward thinking franchise are they? I think Trout would have been just fine moving through Chicago's system.

This. I'm not worried about the likes of Martellus turning on Trestman. His approach is bound to fail on a few guys but they'll probably turn around once they realize the potential cost to futures earning. As long as Jay meshes with him I'm good.

Well you need a 25 man spot and 40 man spot so you could have to do both. Or just DFA Villanueva and make it one move. I'd guess Villanueva stays around as a veteran presence. I'm only okay with that if he grows his cool stash back. -

Maybe it's the negotiation process then. I can't remember an IFA signing that went quickly.

I'd probably do Brett first but I'm sure we'll find at least one waiver guy in August we want to keep and need another additional spot so they're both in trouble. Though neither should last the offseason on the 40 man either anyways. Like you said, they're both almost certainly gone this offseason, but if for some bizarre reason they're not, Brett has an option left for next year and Vitters does not. Didn't realize that. I thought they both were out of options. -

Maybe it's mental at this point. He's been in the system since 2007 and was the jewel of that system until 2011 or 2012. He had a disastrous cup-of-coffee a couple of years ago that sent his stock plummeting. He followed that up with a decent/good year at Iowa last year, yet was never strongly considered for a roster spot in Chicago this year for a very poor team. Now he has been passed by numerous other prospects who are capable of playing any position on the team that he may hope to fill. Seven years in minor-league baseball is a long time. And now his path is blocked by better players. Perhaps he sees the writing on the wall and is near the end. The best he can hope for now is that he gets traded or released and becomes one of those change-of-scenery guys somewhere else. But at his still young age for the level (I feel as though we've been saying this far too long,) coupled with the fact that the bulk of 2013 was lost to injury, I can't imagine he'd have entered the season with any sense of entitlement. If anything, being blocked would be incentive to be noticed by another team in hopes of being traded. Is he still young? I think he's age appropriate at this point. Disclaimer- take out the career AAAA guys if you're gonna quote the average AAA age. -

He used to hit but now he's at like Javy BB and K rates without the sexy power and premium position. If he still had that high teens low 20s k rate I'd hold out some hope for him, even if he struggled. Steroids are his only hope. -

Fwiw ESPN cheat sheet has ball as worth 32. There's no way I'm that high on him. I'd say mid to low teens though which is still big potential surplus value without much risk. It's hard with only two keepers though as it's tempting to just lock up your starting WR at a little under market.

Are there any future keeper rules? Ball looks like a decent gamble at that price if you'll have the option to control him in future years around that rate. Otherwise I think I like Megatron the best, though an argument could be made for Thomas. I'd definitely stay away from Newton at that price. Forte is a push at that price. You can probably get him again at that same price. Gordon I wouldn't touch at all regardless of future keeper rules.

I don't understand the room for abuse. What value is this "free roster spot" suppose to really have? It seems fairly straightforward to me.

To be fair, the other side of that game is Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro. Hee Sop Choi The outcome of whom, to the Cubs, was Derrek Lee, so I'll take that. So we should trade Javy then.

Every single one has involved either Bennett or Lamarr Houston. The only ones I remember last year were Marty too, including taking on the entire secondary at one point last year. Martellus clearly has some issues. But it doesn't show up on game day. Actually now that you say that I think even though the first was between Houston and Mills, Bennett got involved, and the past two have been directly with him. Definitely some issues there. Hopefully guys like Cutler and Marshall can keep him relatively in check so he doesn't injure his own teammate because I'd hate for Britton to be our starting TE. Did he have these issues in Dal and NY?
