    Also defensive metrics keep liking Valbuena less so it doesn't take much to imagine even a below average Bryant 3B and Coghlan esque LF could outhit Valbuena enough to overcome whatever value he provides on defense+ offense as a 3B. ETA while still giving Valbuena plenty of ABs with injuries, off days, and playing matchups. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    They can be plenty valuable but if you move Bryant to LF full time this offseason you're giving up a really good existing option of Bryant the 3B whereas Bryant to LF option will never really die and you can even plan for that option without giving up the best option of Bryant the 3B. It's really simple. Foster and plan on Bryant the 3B while working in some LF work as a contingency and flexibility plan. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Honestly I'm not sure if running is as important from our RB as catching is. However in the context of this team and it's roster construction I think I can buy Bennett being a bigger loss than Forte would be. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Doesn't mean the net defensive impact wouldn't still make Valbuena at 3B and Bryant in LF a better option. Which I addressed, but I don't imagine we're talking about anyone on the extreme defensive outliers though. And if we are, then we go with it, but it could happen we can match the difference in defensive output from Bryant to Valbuena but if we move Bryant off 3B prematurely that option is gone.     Even when you consider Russell,that's a plan that involves putting a guy from SS to 3B where his value will decline (shout out Sulley) so it'd make sense to move the loser of that battle because LF is always gonna be easier to fill than 3B. So if Kris can hack it at 3B that's ideal, but if he has some LF experience and can offer some versatility that's also a plus. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    See my second post. Getting some "whomever" to play LF and put up a 330+ wOBA or whatever Valbuena would put up shouldn't be THAT hard. The point about holding down Bryant's perceived valuable is laughable from all standpoints IMO. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Also while I think we can improve from Coghlan, him and Valbuena would appear to have fairly similar offensive value going forward. Generally speaking, if we're just trying to replace Valbuena's value at the second easiest defensive position, I don't think that's so unattainable. So it come down to Valbuena's defense at third verse Bryant's D at third and the replacement players LF defense vs Bryant's defense. Though this may depend on your views of Valbuena. Is he the .340 wOBA guy from this year or the .315 guy from last year. Or in the middle somewhere. Fangraphs seems to think it may be more middle. Can we get a 330 wOBA OF? I'd think yes, so you'd want the position flexibility having Kris Bryant as a LF and 3B offers and not pushing him to LF outright based on some combination of Russell/Valbuena.     Bryant should get reps in LF and 3B and play where the bat is needed more. Sign a capable CF/OF and roll with a deep lineup with positional flexibility. Russell may complicate things in 6 months but I don't think you totally move Bryant off what would be his most valuable position unless he can't hack it. But the LF/3B split needs to favor 3B since LF won't be as hard to pick up long term and makes Bryant's bat more valuable. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    There's some truth but pitchers are just fluky in general. You can have an 06(?) Cardinals situation where a bunch of waiver wire retreads pitch like Aces for 2 months and an 84 win team wins the WS. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Doesn't McKinney ultimately project as a LF? Despite the tear he's put on since being traded, I don't know if I'm bumping him up that highly yet. I may still keep Almora ahead of him based on positional value, despite how much his plate approach scares me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    We have limited 25 and 40 man roster spots. Lots of interesting back end/BP fodder. Very little top end material (one) and tons of money. It all adds up to spending big rather than spreading money around to reclamation projects. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    I've gone to HS football games in the past when there wasn't anything else to do and I wasn't working. It's a big part of a small-town community. But this year, I've crossed deeper into being a depressive weirdo and I don't think I can watch HS football without thinking about all those studies that say these kids are screwing up their brains on every play. No as cheap entertainment in a small town is one thing, but when you're reading the message boards, getting phone updates on Friday night and generally invested in some 17 year olds' game it's weird. I am partially talking about myself to be clear, but there are seriously some grown ass, non parent adults who seriously get banned on internet message boards for HS football and I can't believe it.     This seems irrationally optimistic. If not for injuries you're EXPECTING us to go to the playoffs 9 out of 10 seasons? It's either that or admit that being terrible for three years sucks and isn't awesome. 50 years from now...... Here lies Kyle, who's long life was still cut 5 years short because the Chicago Cubs only averaged 63 wins between 2012-2014 and not 73. In order to average 73 during those years they would need 92 wins this year, that would have been awesome. That's actually a pretty good way to look at since this year was the first year they REALLY left assets on the table. Granted they did shift some resources away from the MLB club to MiLB the first two years but they were generally doing the dual front thing, misses and all. Seeing how we are doing now, 92 wins wouldn't have been totally out if the question if our Tanaka money went somewhere (preferably a bat) and gave us production. Or at least a wild card chase. We then wouldn't have Russell, McKinney, and Top5 2015 pick, but still have a nice looking future. So if we end up with 4 or 5 out of 10 instead of 5 or 6, I'd definitely be looking at 2014 as the big wasted year because we put all our eggs in the Tanaka basket and failed.     We did the same last year, and they never really made a peep about that money rolling over. That money is almost certainly gone. Wasn't it assumed that paid some of our IFA penalties? Also it was a smaller amount, as we ate some money that deadline. ETA- also hard to say if part of our Tanaka space. Could have just rolled into that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
