people are astonishingly dumb i'm not saying it's a bad idea for the upper echelon teams to add premier free agents, but it confuses the hell out of me how the media and fan consensus seems to be that it makes more sense for those teams to add the high end guys than the teams on the fringe... like HMM who stands to benefit more from adding 4-5 wins to their projection?

a good way of realizing how stupid the pecota projections are is to look at our roster with harper added and then realize they'd still have us like 3rd with 81 wins or something stupid like that

The answer is always the one elite guy when these questions come up Even if the non-elite guys are on shorter deals? Harper has averaged around 5 fWAR over the past 3 seasons Keuchel/Kimbrel/Marwin have combined to average around 7.5 fWAR over the past 3 season. And you wouldn't have any on the hook for a 10 year commitment. yeah let's just add up the WAR of 3 guys and imply they're more valuable than one guy

Not very likely, but I could totally see them coming out of nowhere and giving Harper a massive (compared to the other teams) offer to sign with them. They keep downplaying the importance of signing one of those 2, but its possible they actually get a bit desperate with 1 off the board. williams was talking about how they need more than one player and weren't willing to go up to $300M. i don't see that happening.

if there's any truth to it, i'd think of it less as "preventing" and more as doing him a courtesy. but i'm pretty doubtful of the idea that his absence means anything.

I don’t think this guys actually knows anything. He’s just trying to connect dots that don’t exist on Zobrist’s absence. That being said I could see them thinking trading Zobrist to free up money for Kimbrel on a reduced deal makes sense. FWIW he's claiming a reliable source. who knows if that just means it's his buddy at spring training telling him that zobrist isn't there.
