We've heard a lot of talk from the new front office about a need to build a team here that can win whether the wind is blowing in or out at home. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-1112-hoyer-cubs-chicago--20111112,0,3167361.story It looks like achieving this high level of lineup versatility is going to be a major priority. Thoughts on how it'll be done? Seems like you need lots of well rounded players...some power/obp guys... some speed (er, more accurately, high efficiency base stealers)/obp guys... and maybe one or two who have it all. Pitching-wise, it doesn't seem that hard to figure out. Strikeouts and groundballs with a solid infield defense will win regardless of conditions. But maybe that's an oversimplification. Basically, I just want to see how people on here smarter than me would approach this strategy. Also, a couple of other misc. tidbits from that article...

He doesn't think we should sign Albert or Prince. I like the rest of his points, though, as obvious as they may be. http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-triangle/post/_/id/8898/five-tips-to-get-the-cubs-on-track The 5 tips... much more at link

Cubs hire Joe Bohringer as Pro-Scouting Coordinator (P. 3)
David posted a topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
If this is mentioned in another thread, forgive me. Seems to have gone unnoticed, though. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-cubs-dempster-exercises-option-for-next-season-20111029,0,6398840.story?track=rss Here's a Q&A Baseball Prospectus did with Bohringer http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=7147 -
In hopes to sign him at a lower salary. PWSullivan Paul Sullivan Cubs to decline Samardzija option, re-sign at lower salary; Jed's p.c. at 3 p.m. Tuesday; Quade in limbo. trib.in/vr4Agm 5 minutes ago

I know this doesn't deserve it's own thread - Castro WAR ?
David posted a topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
But I have no idea where else I could post it... Is there anywhere we could find what Castro's WAR was from August 1st on? I'd like to extrapolate that over an entire season just for kicks. I'd imagine, at worst, we'd just need to know what his WAR was at that point... -

Looks like Wittenmeyer asked him a few questions about the Cubs. Welp... without even being sure what he means by day games, we're at least screwed by the gun laws, the weather, and the competitiveness.

With the Sandberg stuff that just came out, another question occurred to me. It seems fairly inevitable that Quade is going to get canned. If we actually manage to hire a smart GM (which I'm pretty optimistic about) and he's actually allowed to make his own managerial hire instead of having Ryno thrust upon him, who are some promising candidates, be it guys who haven't done it before but are known to have sound philosophies (or at least have come up around guys who are) or experienced guys who aren't going to be under contract?
