  1. the phone notifications (not to mention potential texts) is the toughest part. i used to do a lot of DVRing and avoiding game outcomes with the cubs in like 03-04. it was not easy either, because i worked at a busy appliance/electronic store, but i managed to do it somehow. today, tho, it's damn near impossible. also allow me to make the obligatory (from me), "you're going to a regular season hockey game when the cubs are playing a potential elimination playoff game?!" comment The idea that somebody would want to watch a playoff game after it happens is crazy to me. I've DVRd some games, especially when my kids were younger and putting them to bed interfered with the start. So I could catch up what was happening and not miss anything. But when the game is over, if I missed it, just tell me the score. This is so weird. I couldn't even begin to comprehend the change to routine I'd need to watch a game 24 hours after it happened with no spoilers. Just realized this is about the Bears game. are you stopping yourself from watching both? I'm guessing he's assuming he'll be able to watch the Cubs on TV before the hockey game, since the Yankees are expected to get the late slot. But yeah, if the games overlap, I'm going to try to avoid the Bears game updates so that I can watch as soon as I get home, but I don't think I'll be able to.

  4. supposed to know by late morning tomorrow at the latest
  5. not gonna lie...turner vs lester scares me just a tad.

  7. That's insanity. What kind of value is there on the Cubs side? Agreed, I thought maybe -150 tops, tons of value on the Cubs . No respect for Hendricks. If the Nats lose game 1 they are horsefeathers, in my opinion, I mean what is the actual payout?

  9. doesn't at all pertain to week 5, but not sure where else to post this. the gruden conversation earlier reminded me that i had recently watched this. if you can get past your brett favre hate, it is pretty entertaining. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJtSK9PgQfI
  10. I like Jon gruden and I have no idea why. He really is beyond absurd. I guess he's just entertaining in his insanity.
  11. I know maybe 6 guys on arizona and colorado combined, and maybe 1 Twin. I'm also blissfully unaware of a good half of the Yankees squad despite being surrounded by Yankees fans. The majority of viewers don't know who the hell these players are. Even if you don't know who Luis Severino is, do you want to know more about his stuff, how he tends to use his offspeed pitches, where he's struggled, etc. or 15 mins on the fact that he's 23 and that this is his first playoff start? They're details any broadcaster could share, not something I need a color commentator -- who is supposed to be an expert -- to explain. The best color commentators in other sports find a way to not do this all the time, even on national broadcasts. I've never had an issue with this sort of thing...my "triggers" have more to do with meatbally antiquated thinking. i.e. "defense wins championships" in every sport, "jumpshooting teams will never win" in the NBA, citing small sample situational stats like the mean anything in baseball, ground and pound in the NFL, etc. and when they lament how these games have evolved..."in our day blah blah blah."
  12. Man, get a load of our own Turzinsky over here. ok, i'm just gonna say it. i didn't get this. i didn't wanna look dumb at first by asking for the explanation but i can't help myself.
  13. i know most remotely good players in mlb, but that might be because i play fantasy
  14. There is justifiable reason for this for national broadcasts. Especially come playoff time.
  15. Maybe I just hear less of some of these people than you guys do, but I don't hate any national color commentator, not since Tim McCarver stopped. Smoltz is abysmal. Just fat juicy meatballery.
  16. Actually the only national color commentator I can think of that I don't hate is Jessica Mendoza. There's probably some random ex-players that do it just for the playoffs who aren't immediately coming to mind, too.
  17. Yep. When I think of national guys I hate, they are almost all color guys. I don't even hate Joe Buck all that much anymore. Edit - Also, I wouldn't hate the 3 person booth the way you described, either, even though anyone with MLB.tv knows there are tons of terrible local color commentators out there.
  18. i've always thought so. and not just kind of.
  19. On top of what's already been said, his peripherals are damn near identical home and road. http://www.fangraphs.com/statsplits.aspx?playerid=3137&position=P&season=2017#advanced

  21. I'm the opposite. I like the change of pace and the presentation of national broadcasts for the playoffs...at least, once it's on Fox. And I love Len and JD. That said, there are a few national guys I think are awful. Yeah, a lot of national guys suck, but complaining about them is a big part of the process, and accepting them is how you get playoff pageantry. Yep. It's part of what makes it different and special for me. The local Len and JD broadcast feels very routine after 6 months and 162.
