  1. I doubt we'll hear something along those lines whether Hendry does or doesn't have interest. If he's been consistant about anything during his tenure, it is that he holds his cards close to his chest. The Nomar Deal wasn't on most people's radar until the final hours, and no one knew about Lee very far ahead either. Honestly, I'd be more discouraged if we were hearing alot about either of the Giles brothers. Just thought I'd point out that we were all over the Nomar trade for the entire month of July in 04. There were reports coming out as early as early July. Maybe the mainstream media was in denial about Boston trading Nomar, but I think we were generally all over it.. (although plenty doubted its likelihood).. I think the same could be said about Hendry working out a Sosa trade with the Mets and the subsequent Burnitz signing...That was being talked about for a while before. I just think it's a little bit of a misconception that Hendry is any more "sneaky" or secretive than any other GM out there... And in the Lee deal, which did seem to come out of nowhere, Jim has said more than a few times that it fell into his lap, and I wouldn't doubt it. He's no Jerry Krause..
  2. ok im totlly smased right noq, but NO
  3. I'm beginning to think that that is what is going to happen too. Damon will go to the Yankees or Angels. Beltran will become Boston's CF. Cliff Floyd coming here. So you're ok with a Murton, Wilkerson and Floyd OF? Yes. Though if you can sign Giles, you can use Murton as your 4th OF. Then you have something to really get excited about. Giles-Wilkerson-Floyd would be excellent. 'Course, getting Giles, Wilkerson and Floyd is a pipe dream... I think any one of those guys is a pipe dream. I really don't see Hendry pulling off a "big" signing this winter. I really don't. He pretty much has to. Lots of money freed up after this season and his reputation isn't looking good after two very disappointing years.. (Then again, they are talking about extending him already... )
  4. Yeah, I don't see the upgrade for us there... Walker is cheap production; almost as good as a rookie. Why spend several million dollars to upgrade a position where we are already above average? Use the resources, rather, to upgrade a position of need. Like, say, OF. Plus, Walker to Soriano would be a downgrade anyway.... Soriano = overrated... :pukel:
  5. Who are you trading Walker for? Because I'd take Walker over the overrated/no-patience Soriano... :?
  6. I was going to say Tapani...but the 98 Cubs were 90-73.. Kinda threw me off...
  7. What is this??? Walker is the furthest thing from the problem on this team. Why does it bother you that he's outspoken? That's probably my favorite thing about him. He's honest and tells the fans what is actually on his mind...not the standard cliche crap that the other players give you.. Oh, and I'll take his "soft" .300/.355/.475 any day...
  8. I dont know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but how similar was the Giants' 1998 forcing of a one game playoff to what the Cubs would need to do to get in this year? I can't remember how far out they were at what point and how many teams they had to surpass to get to game 163 with us...
  9. I was about to post the same thing. I remember him hitting a couple in Detroit...around 400 feet each. He didn't set the record there, though. His 20th was later in the month at Wrigley against Arizona, I believe..
  10. For once, I'm gonna use this emoticon... ](*,) I didn't have much hope with regard to Hendry, but you would think that Dusty would at least be required to have some semblance of success (outside of 2003) to get an extension.... UGH http://www.suntimes.com/output/sports/cst-spt-cub05.html I can't believe they're going to waste the window of opportunity they have with these starting pitchers (namely Z and Prior) still being somewhat cheap by having a complete imbecile running the team. Plus these next couple years are prime years for Lee and Ramirez... We'd better hope Hendry puts out a team so talented that Dusty can't screw it up... and that Hendry doesn't put any Dusty boys on the bench... Unfortulately, with Neifi likely on his way back (who, admittedly, would be a decent BACKUP if used properly), it doesn't look like that will be the case. 2008....
  11. FWIW, Levine mentioned on SportsNight (CSN) that the Cubs would be going hard after Burnett and quite possibly Furcal too. It was within the context that the Cubs and White Sox would be competing for some of the same free agents this offseason. I wouldn't mind the move at all. Our SP could become a murderers row again with Z, Prior, Wood, Burnett, and Maddux. (Maddux WOULD be way overpaid, but for a 5th he's not that bad...) Plus, I suppose we could then use Jerome and a few other guys as trade bait to fill the OF needs.
  12. You're probably the only one that thinks that. <----here's another one.
  13. Zambrano put up a 3.66 ERA in 108 innings at age 21. Dusty didn't unearth his talent. SHHH... don't screw up his argument with your crazy facts, man!!!
  14. Don't look now, but in a few hours we might be only 4.5 games out of a playoff spot, folks... :D :D
  15. These two guys really know this park, man.
  16. Did Corey ever say he doesn't like bunting? Because, if I'm not mistaken, he's among the (if not THE leader) league leaders in bunt hits over the last couple years.
  17. There is no excuse for Aramis to only be at second... WTF?? I don't ever question his hustle, because i know about his groin injuries, but that was inexcusable.
  18. If anything, I wish they'd replace the regular season alternate blues with the spring training blues. I prefer the navy blue. And I'm not a fan of the away greys. I even preferred the mid-90's away jerseys with "Cubs" scripted across the front over the current ones.
  19. WHY OH WHY DOES ESPNHD HAVE TO BE BLACKED OUT IN CHICAGO???
  20. The franchise we know as The Chicago Cubs is currently in it's 130th season of competition in the National League. To casually throw around phrases like "unprecedented to the ..... franchise" suggests that you have done little or no research on this team. You may want to start with 1935. Start with 1935? For a little more relevant argument, how about going back 20 years and pull out the years when the monster last month carried the Cubs into the playoffs....... In 1984 the CUBS went 16-11 (0.592) in September to finish 96-65 (0.596). While that's good, I'd hardly call it a monster last month. Yea, the 2003 team closed it out better than that... 19-8 in September, and it could easily have been 20-7 or 21-6 (Alou's foul ball in the game we lost to the Cards and a couple of games we easily could have won against the Expos come to mind)... Whatever, either way they got it done and got in.
  21. The thing is, getting back to .500 is more of a long-term goal than sweeping the Astros... (I don't know whether to laugh or cry about that...)
  22. What team do you see winning 90?? This group of wildcard contenders don't look too strong. Anyone know what's the lowest win total to take the wildcard?? I don't know.. but in 2003 we took the division with only 87... :) 88. My bad, you're right.. I think 87 might have been the 2001 win total. I was thinking we won 88 last year, and I knew we won one more last year than in 03... but we actually won 89. That team could easily have won 92-93 games..
