  1. No offense, but my head hurts after reading this... :x
  2. I don't see what recent developments, if any, would lead you to believe this. You should really throw an "IMO" in somewhere so nobody mistakenly takes this to be factual. The Cubs have as good a chance as anyone to get him, at this point, especially if Hendry is being as aggressive as it seems. I know a lot of people (myself included) think Hendry is inept. But there's just no way he isn't going to go hard after the best free agent OF on the market when we basically have an empty outfield (save for Murton, MAYBE). Money talks. Giles will play here if the Cubs pony up the cash. BTW, how many reports were we hearing last year that Beltran didn't like New York and didn't want to play for either team? (Not that we've even heard anything about Giles not wanting to play here)... None of that stuff matters. It will ultimately come down to our offer.
  3. I'm still holding out hope that all the trade Walker stuff in nonsense. Then, if they pick up Furcal, this is all a moot point.
  4. SERENITY NOW!!! Here's hoping one of those other teams that loses out on Furcal will pick up Perez and offer him an everyday SS job.
  5. Levine was the first (by a mile) to report anything about a trade for Nomar (a month before it happened). He also was one of the first to talk about the Cubs' interest in Maddux pre-2004. Just because he reported that the Cubs were on the verge of a major trade earlier this year and it never happened doesn't mean he has no credibility. For all you know, that deal was in the works but just fell apart. Oh, and more recently, he was one of the first to report the forthcoming Rusch contract.
  6. hahahhaha, that's great...  BTW.. did anyone else hear "George isn't at home, just leave a message after the beep... I must be out or I'd pick up the phone..." after reading the thread title??
  7. Yep. Burnett's apparent desire to come here and Dempster's desire to have him here have been mentioned more than a few times on this board.
  8. I'm guessing if we sign Burnett, a few of those pitchers will be going...especially Williams. Maybe Hendry is trying to build a powerhouse here... if he goes out and gets Giles, Furcal, and AJ, he'd be well on his way. The offense would be solid and the starting pitching would be absurd. We can only dream... I've said it before, if healthy (BIG IF, I KNOW), that rotation would be incredibly imposing, especially in the playoffs... Z, Prior, Burnett, Wood, Maddux.. =P~ =P~ =P~ My prediction is Kerry will end 2006 as the world's most expensive setup man. Here's hoping you're wrong, very very wrong.
  9. man, imagine the posisbilities if we did not have that 9mil contract for Maddux. Seriously... We could put Burnett into the rotation and Williams could take the 5th spot.. Then we'd have an extra 9 mil free to do whatever we wanted...

  11. Yea, I want offense too. But, I don't want to deal with Rusch having a virtually assured spot in the rotation. When/if he has to fill in for injuries here and there, I can live with it. But otherwise, please no. Also, I don't think signing Burnett and Furcal would be the full extent of our moves either. I'm pretty sure Hendry is aware of the need for a big bat in the OF, and we've heard about his interest in Giles. I just think he's made the mistake of prioritizing a speedy leadoff man over the other power bat.. but I'm sure he's aware of both needs. Just imagine if we came away from this cruddy free agent class with Furcal, Giles, and Burnett.. By the way... are all three of these guys type A? And if they are, could someone help me out and post the limitations on how many type A's we can sign? It's been posted before, but I really don't remember what they are.
  12. Per Bruce Levine... I thought it would be posted already, but at the very least, nobody has started a thread on it. According to the report, Hendry will start the full-court press on Burnett next week. They also mentioned that if Hendry doesn't succeed in signing Furcal, THEN he will inquire with the Marlins about Pierre... Goes against what a few here were saying that the rotation was set with Rusch/Williams to take the final spot.
  13. Why do this when you could just play Murton in LF and Walker at 2B? I'd rather have Murton in the lineup than Cedeno. Besides, Walker would probably be an adventure, at best, in the outfield.
  14. walker would be pissed because he wants to start every day (not a bad thing of course!) but thats a very good idea. he can also give lee a break at 1b once in a while. That and he hits left handers just as well as he hits righters, making a platoon counter-productive. (to lazy to look up career splits, but this year was much better against lefites - vs. Left: .352 vs. Right: .291) Ah.. well, I'm too lazy to look up the career splits too, but, if ya had looked them up, you would've seen that this year was an aberration. Walk generally has struggled a lot with lefties over the course of his career.
  15. Just a heads up for those of you who get the NFL Network...at 6 central, NFL Total Access will be doing a segment on the Bears.. and at 8 central, the Bears/Lions game will be featured as the NFL Network Game of the Week.
  16. New Orleans too...2-6 The rest of those teams are a combined 20-8 right now. If you ask me, that's a pretty tough schedule. you forgot arizona What about Arizona? :-k
  17. Who said 4 years anyway? I'd be much happier with a 3-year, 30 million contract than a 4-year, 36 million contract. Also, if we do land Furcal, there's no question we'd move Todd Walker in my mind. Cedeno is gonna be cheap for a long time, and with the added expensive contracts of Furcal and hopefully Giles, not to mention someone in the Starting pitching role, Cedeno will be a much better bargain. Plus, he'd be a decent 2 hole hitter as well. Also, this is very exciting. I can't wait until Nov. 11th. I'm not sure that the $2 million or so that Walker would make more than Cedeno is worth the downgrade in expected performance. I think Walker is plenty enough of a bargain as it is.
  18. or move Walker & give both Cedeno & Furcal time @ 2nd & SS. What exactly is the benefit of that?
  19. BTW... Let's not get ridiculous here... This isn't a Preston Wilson or Juan Encarnacion situation. Those are the type of acquisitions I'd be "resigned" to. Furcal would be a positive addition to the team. I'm just bothered by the fact that we'd be overpaying for him when we could be better off re-signing Nomar for far less money. He's not Orlando Cabrera...(another example of the type of addition I'd be "resigned" to). He's good.. He's just sort of overrated. But I'd take him. He can get on base at a .350 plus clip... From 2003-2005 he stole 100 bases out of 118 attempts (85%), which is well over the break-even point. In other words, his ability to steal is good enough to help an offense rather than hinder it. Again, I'd rather take a chance on Nomar... but Furcal isn't anywhere near the type of player I'd be resigned to the Cubs acquiring.
  20. The Cubs are after Giles, we've heard that much. And I can't say that I doubt it at all. We need help in the OF and he's the best outfielder available. There's more than enough money available to go after both Giles and Furcal (although I'd rather go the Nomar route). As for Jones, if Jacque Jones is in the Cubs outfield next year, I won't watch a game. And I expect to watch just about every single one. That's not to say we'll have Giles for sure. I just don't think there's any reason to expect a J. Jones signing.
  21. I think/hope that second part is just Sullivan speculating. I doubt he has anything concrete to back that up.
  22.  BTW.. Can I be the first? NO TRADE CLAUSE NO TRADE CLAUSE NO TRADE CLAUSE NO TRADE CLAUSE NO TRADE CLAUSE NO TRADE CLAUSE NO TRADE CLAUSE NO TRADE CLAUSE NO TRADE CLAUSE NO TRADE CLAUSE NO TRADE CLAUSE NO TRADE CLAUSE!!!!!1111one1!
