  1. it looks like to me looking at that lineup that ramirez is batting seventh? Looks to me like he was listing positionally, not the lineup. LF, CF, RF, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, C ding ding ding!! Although, looking at it now, outside of ARam hitting 7th, it doesn't look all that crazy that cubs121 would think that... But yea, that was positional. If I had to order that lineup, I'd probably go.. Murton, Walker, Lee, Giles, Ramirez, Garciaparra, Bradley(/Cameron), Barrett (If it were Cameron, I might switch it up and put Barrett 7th and Cameron 8th)... It's pretty tough to line up though..lots of good hitters. EDIT - Thinking about it further, if it were Bradley, I might just be tempted to bat him #2 and use Walker as a very good 7th hitter.
  2. I'd like to see it...just to see Sammy be able to put up some numbers for a couple more years. It was sad to see him tank so bad this year. At the same time, however, it made me feel not as bad about the Cubs dumping him off.
  3. I agree with you, right up until you added that needless hyperbole at the end. I realize this is ancient history, but for the time being, it's all we've got. 1876 thru 1925 World Series team W L pct PA W L Chicago Cubs 3712 2890 0.562 5 2 3 St. Louis Cardinals 2100 2878 0.422 0 0 0 Wow, how did I forget the turn of the century..
  4. It's definitely intriguing. It'd be a gamble. But he continued to put up great numbers last year in limited time. I'd be excited if it happened, but I'd be worried about a potential injury too. On the plus side, we should be able to get LA to pick up some of that contract.
  5. You may not like Stoney's attitude, but the man knows baseball and he's never been afraid to voice his views. Brenly is nothing more than a lapdog and Kaspar is just average at best. Whether Stoney would ever be given an opportunity to be a GM or front office decision maker is open for debate. Teams don't often take chances on out-spoken announcers and GM-types. They want house men who spew the party line and do what they are told. Harry Caray may have been the last of the great announcers in that regard. Teams are more concerned about the image of the team, rather than have an announcer actually tell you what's going on. They didn't learn that Harry sold more Cubs tickets than any marketing campaign could by telling the truth and not sugar coating it. When I see Hendry start '06 by bringing back the entire coaching staff, Walker, Wood(on the team at all), Dempster as a starter, CPatt, etc.. makes me want someone else in charge. Whether that's Stoney or Theo Epstein or even Tim, at least they would speak their mind and not stand pat. Not that I disagree that I'm generally disappointed in Hendry lately, but what's wrong with exercising Walker's option? That was a great move. Dempster isn't a starter. And what do you expect them to do with Wood?
  6. How true... Nothing I can really say to that.
  7. They're in so much trouble that they will probably win the Central Division by only 10-12 games next year. Their policy of overspending for 1 player and hurting the overall team should hasn't seemed to hurt them the last few seasons. When last seen, the Cards were packing their cars after the Stros buried them. How did that Larry Walker deal work out for you? First of all, Cards is really stupid. Second of all, There's not one of us who wouldn't have wanted the Cards' success this year. The playoffs are a crapshoot, losing in them doesn't make you inferior, especially coming from a fan of a team who missed the playoffs. Thirdly, I'm pretty sure the Walker deal worked out fine for them. They got him for basically nothing, and at a discount, and now I don't think they have to pay his buyout since he retired. Sounds like a sweet deal to me. I second every part of this. BTW, I highly doubt Backtobanks is a Cards fan... He's just acknowledging, as most of us with a brain do, that the Cards have run their organization far better than the Cubs have the last few years (er, always).
  8. You say it's depth. Maybe I'm greedy/spoiled, but I want great pitchers at least 1-4. As it stands right now, the dropoff after Prior, Z, and Wood is pretty substantial. They have more than enough money freed up to sign Giles, re-sign Nomar, and still get one of the top two pitchers on the market. And Giles is the type of addition that alone will make a significant improvement to the offense. As for Nomar, yes, he's a risk to get hurt. But he would cost a lot less than Furcal and could easily outperform him, and the money saved can help bring in a starting pitcher. Plus, signing the starting pitcher allows us to trade some of that depth for another bat. The Giles situation aside, to me, Nomar + Burnett/Millwood > Furcal (+ Williams/Rusch in the rotation). If the worst happens and Nomar gets hurt, you give Cedeno a shot. Needless to say, I don't think it's very realistic (or necessarily the best choice) to go after Furcal, Giles, AND a starting pitcher. Thoughts?
  9. If all goes well and that rotation stays healthy, we're going to have some unhappy campers on our hands (Rusch and Williams). True...although, I'd like to see them trade Williams for a bat in CF. As for Rusch, let him be unhappy. He was promised a shot at the rotation, not a spot. He can try to beat those guys out, but he won't, even with a fair shot. Besides, even if they stay relatively healthy, I'm sure there will be random injuries where he'll get more than a few spot starts.
  10. It's not like we just made it up. Various reports say that Hendry wants to improve the pitching situation... http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-051031cubs,1,7925414.story?coll=cs-home-headlines
  11. Out of curiosity, does anyone have any idea how much Burnett is going to command on the market? I was guessing anywhere from 8-12, (more likely on the higher end) but that's a complete guess.
  12. Outside of the aging problem, you pretty much just described the Cubs outfield situation as well. I don't want Giles anywhere near St. Louis...bring him here, Jim.
  13. I agree with you on the injury risk issue. I guess it's just the gambler in me. I've always wanted that fourth true power arm for the staff. Burnett could/would be that guy.
  14. That's news to me. So Cedeno will start either at 2B if we trade Walker or SS if we can't get Furcal? Is that the plan? All it is is speculation from Sullivan. I'd take it with less than a grain of salt. I don't see a quote anywhere, other than Hendry saying that 1B is the only set position (which is clearly hyperbole).
  15. I know some people here are more in favor of going after Millwood, but I'm with you. I love the potential reward of signing Burnett, and just imagining how dominant that staff could be. We'd be the talk of baseball, and the staff could easily outperform the 2003 staff. I agree that Wood is in for a big year. Now that his shoulder is cleared up, he has no excuses. Plus, like you mentioned, it's a contract year for him. If it were up to me, the major priorities would be to keep Nomar, sign Giles, and sign Burnett. I'd then try to swing a trade using a couple of our extra arms to get Bradley or Cameron to play CF. I think Hendry is dead set on getting Furcal at SS, though. I suppose we'll see. But he seems to be focused on picking up a "prototypical leadoff man." My scenario would give us the following lineup & rotation LF - Murton, CF - Bradley or Cameron, RF - Giles, 1B - Lee, 2B - Walker, SS - Nomar, 3B - Ramirez, C - Barrett SP - Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Burnett, Maddux Looks pretty formidable to me.. strong lineup and strong staff
  16. Yep. I can't remember the last time Sullivan had a scoop on anything. Here's hoping he's wrong about this and his "right fielder with more speed than power" idea.
  17. whoaboy http://forums.stltoday.com/viewtopic.php?t=308345 Please let it be true. Please let it be true. Of course, if the Cards get Womack, he'll proceed to hit .300 and post a .400 OBP with 60 steals in 62 attempts.
  18. That's quite a stretch. Kasper is great. But Brenly is run-of-the-mill, at best. Stone was far more insightful. That said, I agree with the majority here that he wouldn't make a good GM or manager.
  19. I feel almost dirty linking the MLB boards here, but I got a kick out of this. Braves fan campaigning for Neifi as Furcal's replacement. http://www.forums.mlb.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=ml-braves&msg=61531.1&ctx=0 DO IT JS!
  20. I'll gladly take the $250 mil payroll (and the winning), thanks.
  21. Maybe go after a CF (Bradley/Cameron) with those extra starting arms we have, but I agree.. LF - Murton CF - Patterson (Bradley? ) RF - Giles 1B - Lee 2B - Walker SS - Furcal 3B - ARam C - Barrett To me, that lineup looks good enough to compete for the division. Amazing how much of a difference 2 signings would make.
  22. Honestly, if Nomar wants to extend his career and be at less risk for injury, a move to LF for the rest of his career would be in his best interest, imo. Yeah, bu does he even have the arm to play OF? Not everybody can play any position. Well, he does have a hell of an arm, we've seen that... Only he might have to make sidearm throws from the OF, lol.. I think if Nomar wants to really lower his value and possibly ruin his career, he'll move to the OF..
  23. Real shame Orton made that bad throw... Could be 17-3 right now, on the way to another Lions beat down... Can't complain at all though.. He's had a Hell of a first half. Shame about Bradley, though.. :x
