  1. In my opinion, thank God you're not GM of the Cubs. I wouldn't say that. That's hardly the worst lineup that the Cubs could end up with. That said I don't think the Cubs need Burnett, I don't think they want Burnett, and I hope we don't end up with Kearns and I hope Ronny doesn't end up batting 2nd. I definitely do think Hendry is interested in Burnett, but that's totally beside the point. In tspain's proposal, he traded away Prior (which is one reason I would agree strongly with da bears), so Burnett or some front line starting pitcher would definitely be needed.
  2. I don't mind the orange. Not sure why everyone hates em so much. Orange has always been one of their team colors. Hell, the colors come from the Illini. My favorite was when they wore the blue on blue for MNF at Champaign a few years ago. They looked mean as hell. Too bad they didn't play like it. Wish they'd go back to white on white for road games...
  3. IMO, offense is far more important than defense. Walker isn't even close to being a butcher in the field. Not just in your opinion. It's a fact. BTW, Nomar's groin injury sure had a lot to do with playing short, didn't it?
  4. he can't play defense or steal bases. What's with the eyeroll? You're going to sit there and tell me that Furcal is worth 4x what Walker makes? Not twice the player or 3 times the player, but 4x the player. Furcal had 27 errors in 2002, 31 in 2003 and 24 in 2004. One season at 15 (ahem, contract season), and all of a sudden he's a defensive wiz. I love it. Furcal averaged 20 something steals until 2004 (his contract year). Then he magically steals nearly twice as many. You know for a fact he won't go right back to his lazy 20 something steals and 20 something errors once he signs his name on that big fat contract? Edgar Renteria and Orlando Cabrera sure are earning their money these days, aren't they? My apologies if I misunderstood your eyeroll post. I'm pretty sure his eyeroll was at the stupidity of the arguments used against Walker...
  5. It's a negotiating ploy. None of those teams are bigger bets to sign him than the Cubs and he's not gonna get $50M from anyone. Of course, this is what Hendry gets for looking so desperate.
  6. Maybe. But Bonds was better, pure and simple. As ridiculous as it sounds with his stats in mind, Sammy didn't deserve it that year.
  7. I, to this day, have no idea how we almost made the playoffs that year with Bill Mueller missing most of the year (and being replaced by Ron Coomer), Damon Buford playing a prominent role, Matt Stairs playing first for half the year, our best pitcher being Jon Lieber, the immortal Jeff Fassero blowing games left and right out of the bullpen, etc. That was just a majorly overachieving team. What a fun season. :P Sammy. Sosa. (.328/.437/.737) the 64/160/146 didn't hurt either All byproducts of the afforementioned. (Except the HR)
  8. I've had someone go as far as to say that Estes was a better pitcher than Johnson in 2004. When I asked him if he could sign either one to the Giants (his favorite team), he refused to admit he was wrong and he insisted he'd sign Estes. I'm done with the 'wins' arguments. Some people choose to stay in the dark. So be it.
  9. I just heard a replay of an interview with Chris Carpenter on the "The Show" with Rob Dibble and Kevin Kennedy. Dibble asked Carpenter if he changed his mechanics any since his time in Toronto. Carpenter answered, "No." So, according to Carpenter, he did not change his mechanics. Oh, SNAP! PWNT hahaha

  11. I'd switch Soriano and Castillo, despite the power differences.. Castillo is much more of an OBP guy than Soriano is..hell, I might even make it Todd Walker on the OBP/SLG team...and I'm not sure Wilson belongs with the high OBPers either..... Ah, hell, I'll just list my own.. high avg/low relative OBP guys, swing at a lot /good de C - Pudge Rodriguez 1B - Sean Casey 2B - Alfonso Soriano 3B - Shea Hillenbrand? SS - David Eckstein LF - Carl Crawford CF - Willy Taveras RF - Ichiro low avg/high obp, high slg guys/bad de C - Jorge Posada 1B - Richie Sexson 2B - Todd Walker 3B - Troy Glaus LF - Adam Dunn CF - Brad Wilkerson RF - Geoff Jenkins? It was tough to stick to all the qualifications, did my best though...paid more attention to the offensive stuff, but took defense into account when I could.
  12. Not that I agree that this would be the case, but why should this matter? Furcal will undoubtedly end up being more overpaid than Giles. Plus, Encarnacion is the exact type of player Hendry would overpay for. This question of value vs. what is paid is more important than the actual amount they receive.
  13. Well, he definitely said he was interested in Furcal the other day.
  14. Based on the reports so far, it might be even lower than that.. like ~3/$30M. Please, Jim...
  15. We could have the "killer Zs" and pipe in snoring. Actually laughed out loud at that one... Well played.
  16. Maybe it's some adaptation of the trade Hoops told us about a few weeks ago.
  17. Can we put this to rest, once and for all? PITCHING was what drove the White Sox to success this year. Their offense had nothing to do with it. It was a mediocre offense. Far worse than the 2004 offense. Their pitchers were great and it was that simple. Watch that pitching regress to 2004 levels and see how many games they win with "smart-ball." As for the topic of this thread, Guillen and Cox were fine choices.
  18. I also do get the sense that Hendry feels Juan Pierre can rebound from his not-so-good OBP in 2005. My sense is that he'd want Dusty to bat Furcal first and Pierre 2nd if he got both of them. Out of curiosity, why do you think that? I'm just going on the fact that Furcal has some semblance of power while Pierre has none, but I would think Furcal would be better suited to the 2 hole, out of those two.
  19. Jeff Blauser would probably be a better option. At least he put up OBP's in the .340's in his two otherwise abysmal seasons here.
  20. That's basically my exact story... except I got hooked earlier on in that season. I was more of a Sox fan (except I didn't really care about sports) prior to 95. The Jordan comeback got me really interested in sports and after the Bulls lost to the Magic, I needed a new sport to watch. Eventually, I was watching the 95 Cubs...They were way outta the division race.. Cincy had it in the bag.. But they were in the wild card race till that final weekend. I remember having tickets to the last game of the season, and I had made a sign that said GO GIANTS, because we needed the Rockies (I think) to lose to the Giants... When we were eliminated, I was so disappointed that I almost didn't go to the game.
  21. This is so frustrating. All this incompetence in the management of our favorite team and there's absolutely nothing we can do about it.
  22. I'm at a loss for words. Really. I can't decide whether I feel angry or entirely helpless. I want to leave this team behind, but I just can't. And if this weren't a family board...
  23. On the first bolded point, no, Encarnacion wouldn't be the worst signing in the world. That's because Rey Sanchez, Fernando Vina, and Pokey Reese are on the market, too. Encarnacion would, however, be a very very very bad signing. And on the second point, it doesn't worry me. Mostly because these predictions have no relation to or bearing on reality.
  24. Smith already said he is staying with Orton for the rest of the season, right? Not as far as I know. He doesn't really answer the question directly when it's asked. He has dodged it repeatedly by saying that Kyle is the guy but that Rex is part of our team too. What can you expect him to say, though? "As soon as Rex comes back, Kyle will go back to the bench." Not likely. Can't do that to the guy who is starting right now. I think it's more of a situation where they'll cross that bridge once they get to it. I'm sure if Kyle is progressing, it'll be hard for them to pull him.. If Kyle has another stinker like the Cincy game (or even yesterday), you might just see Rex come in. Personally, I think this team's best chance to succeed is with Rex. Right now they're just getting by in spite of Orton. That's not to take anything way from him. He's doing what he's asked, generally doing what it takes not to lose. That won't be enough against the better teams, though. If Rex can stay healthy (we know that IF around here), he should be the future of this team.
