  1. Their pitchers depend on that defense a LOT...I think this actually could hurt them quite a bit...also because the middle infield rotation was working well because of rest and matchups...if Ryan, Miles et al are playing every day, as opposed to just when matchups favor them, I think you'll see drop offs in their production. They may depend on that defense a lot, but how many chances is the replacement 3B actually going to get per game that they won't be able to make but that Rolen would have made? The difference between a great fielder and an average one isn't all that much. In the short term, it probably won't even show itself. EDITED - to make a little more sense
  2. What gets under my skin is that the Cubs are paying an elite salary to an above average player. It really, really sucks.
  3. Honestly, you can't really compare them. Most of the time when someone else batted leadoff Soriano was not in the lineup and you lose his production. Personal rule of thumb, which every team shoudl use. Never give out contracts for more than 5 years. It can only end bad. Usually. But I would've given Pujols an 8-9 year deal coming out of his rookie contract without hesitation. Same goes for ARod. His contract didn't turn bad because of the length, but more because the Rangers spent too much money on him to be able to afford to put a team around him. That's on them for allocating more payroll than they could afford to one player. And I'd do the same for Miguel Cabrera when he hits free agency, assuming he doesn't keep getting fatter and fatter.
  4. If you made manny 3(? was that the season?) years younger and wound back his contract and put him on waivers again, he'd be grabbed. Unfortunately, Soriano isn't anywhere near as good as Manny. So winding the clock back on Manny doesn't really level the playing field. It just puts it even further in Manny's favor.
  5. True. I've never been able to muster up much hatred for the guy. When he joined the Cards, I remember something about Rolen refusing to really talk to the Cubs at all. That's not going to score a lot of points with me, but maybe I'm wrong about that. He does seem like a pretty decent guy. I hope he never plays well for the Cards again, though. Let him heal up and come to the Cubs for a resurgence 8-) I think we've got 3B taken care of for a while. And it's damn nice to say that.
  6. if by "being Z" you mean pitching a shutout last night.... Not necessarily. What if Z only gives up 2? Maybe the offense finds a way to squeeze a couple across. Besides, it's not like you were only referring to last night. EDIT - I guess you sort of were, since he would've had to have won all 4, but whatever. Meh.
  7. They've been better pitchers than Z. Pitching is done on the mound. His effectiveness on the mound = his effectiveness as a pitcher. Z has been a better hitter. What you're saying is tantamount to saying that, I don't know, Mike Piazza was a better catcher than Charles Johnson. It makes far more sense to say that Piazza is a better hitter than to say he's a better catcher. Sure, it wouldn't be entirely inaccurate, because it would be no different than saying something like, "Manny Ramirez is one of the top left fielders in the league." Phrases like that are pretty commonly accepted, even though they're obviously referring to the much more important skillset at the plate than his actual abilities as a left fielder. But intuitively, I don't think it makes much sense. Cliffs: Even if you think that Z has been more valuable because of his hitting, which seems to be the point LoK is making, it makes more sense to say that Hill and Lilly have been better pitchers. Z is a better hitter and perhaps better overall.
  8. In terms of my concerns about what could help the Cardinals overtake us in the standings this last month, Scott Rolen's defense at 3B was nowhere on my list. It's quite possible that his replacement could out perform the piss-poor year he's having at the plate.
  9. Except for this year, the result of this inconsistency is a 4.06 ERA when in previous years it was 3.41, 3.26, 2.75, 3.11. He's still got time to continue this supposed trend and post a dominant September that takes him into the mid-3's, though.
  10. Doesn't he pretty much blow this year anyway? Or was he a big part of their recent push?
  11. you're going to judge him on one night? every pitcher has a bad night. does webb suck because the padres scored 5 off of him last night? he must not be the diamondback's best pitcher by your logic. Zambrano hasn't been the best pitcher on the Cubs this season. Hill and Lilly have been better. who do you start game 1 in the playoffs (assuming they're all equally rested)? don't know about you...but i start big Z. Honestly, I wouldn't. I think he would be too jacked up for game 1 and be all over the place. Although, he might be jacked up any game of a playoff series that he starts. Kinda like 2003 when we gave him a 3-0 lead in game 1 of the NLCS and he preceded to give up 3 HRs in a span of 4 batters when he only gave up 9 HR all year. i was at that game in atlanta. he was what...21 yrs old then? not sure its still relevant to today. That game was actually in Chicago vs. the Marlins. We might've swept that series had we won that game (which we probably should've). Who knows if things would've gone at all differently thereafter had we won game 1, though. All we have are 'what ifs.'
  12. Is this a joke? It almost sounds like you are trolling for responses. Are you going to start talking about fire and intensity now and suggesting that Lou needs to throw a fit and start throwing bases around out there to light a fire under the team?
  13. Oh God. Are you seriously citing a player's facial expressions now?? Seriously?? Oh God. Yes I am. Seriously. Only a fool would think that something's not wrong with him based on that, and his poor offensive production this year. But don't let me muddy up your pollyannish view of this team, that's everything's just swell. You can argue that things aren't swell at all (and I wouldn't really disagree, I already said that this is a mediocre team that's leading a less than mediocre division, nothing more). But using facial expressions as evidence isn't going to make you a strong case. Not with me at least. By the way, what poor offensive production? You mean he's not living up to his insane 2005 season? Wow. Who would've expected that? I wouldn't exactly call .313/.400/.492 poor, though. Maybe not as good as we'd like.

  15. Not to mention the fact that us not getting too up in arms about possibly losing this series obviously would affect the team's effort level somehow. I may not be happy with losing 2/3, but facts are facts. If we lose tonight and tomorrow, we're only losing a game of ground. No need for us to panic. The players have to take care of business. At this point, it looks like slightly over .500 will be good enough to do so. In the meantime, we'll be seeing a lot of mediocre baseball.
  16. Wait, what the hell? We lost that game in extras. Tied it in the 8th, though.
  17. the game where Pickler sang possibly??? Really? Wow. Thanks for the insight there, chief. ;)
  18. Nevermind.. got it. June 12th vs Mariners.
  19. Which game was the original Rally Pickler game, anyway? Tried googling it but couldn't find it.
  20. Meh. Worst case, we lose a game of ground in this series. That's why winning yesterday was so big.
  21. Rally Pickler, genius. Not sure why you're taking it upon yourself to call me out as Pickler. I'm not one of the ones who called out your moronic arguments against Rich Hill yesterday. He was terrible, wasn't he? Strike a nerve? Calm down man, I was just asking why you're posting pictures of high school girls in their prom dresses. Don't get all pissy with me because I ask why you're being creepy. Right, I'm the pissy one. ROFL I'm always going off the deep end on here. lmao

  24. I could seriously never be a pitcher. I'd lose my cool in these situations and start beaning pitchers in the head like an idiot. True story. I do it on MLB 2k7.
