  1. That ERA is probably skewed pretty heavily by that terrible start he had there on opening day a couple years ago.
  2. Valid argument. Luckily, at least we can shorten the game just as well as they can, as our relief has been absolutely sick, short of Dempster. Marmol, Wood, and Howry.. wow... EDIT - I'm dumb, too. The dominant bullpen part is the point I was referring to. Didn't really even give much thought to the 13 games over .500 in one run games = +13 run differential stat. Hah
  3. Neither were the Marlins The Marlins were the hottest team in baseball (IIRC) from May on, or so. (Sort of like this year's Cubs, except it was June and the Yankees were hotter).... They had 3 pitchers capable of being absolutely dominant in Beckett, Willis and Penny. Pavano was solid, as well. The only reason the Cubs had home field in that series was because the Marlins were the wild card. They were a 91 win team and only overachieved slightly based on Pythag. I'm not saying they were necessarily a better team than the Cubs were at that point in the year, but they were much better than this D'Backs team, IMO.
  4. Like I said, people always look for reasons why a certain team may be an exception. I look at that lineup and pitching staff, and I don't see a 90 win team. I look at their overall numbers, I don't see a 90 win team. Then I see the run differential, and I sure as hell don't see a 90 win team. Pythag wins has proven to be a pretty good metric time and again. Does anyone really think the D'Backs would win 90 games if they played 162 games again? Or, better yet, does anyone think they'll win 90 games next year if they trot out that same team? Maybe if the young players continue to make strides..but certainly not at the level they performed at this year.
  5. How many months of premium are you willing to bet on that? That reminds me... illiniguy owes me $50 from a game thread bet a few weeks back, since the Cubs took the division. I'd be willing to go double or nothing on a playoff series, though. ;) Might as well let it ride and keep that mojo going.
  6. You have far more October optimism than I. I'm with him. AZ has done it on smoke and mirrors. Teams with insanely lucky looking run differentials always try to find excuses or reasons as to why they're the exception (or their fans do, at least) to the rule, and why their 90 win team that has given up 30 more runs than they've scored is as good as their record, but I'm not buying it. I look at AZ and I see one great pitcher. A decent team, but I don't fear them for one second. If we can't handle them, oh well. The playoffs are a crapshoot, but I can't think of a better opponent to be matched up with in a playoff series... (except maybe the 06 Cardinals, and we all saw how that worked out, heh)... I'm not quite as optimistic as Mizzou. I see Cubs in 4, maybe 5 if some bounces don't go our way. But I see no excuse for this team not to go in there and handle the D'Backs.
  7. At least that means the Cubs would've claimed HFA. But I'm greedy. I want 2-0. :)
  8. Actually, as #2, I can safely say I'd be happy to never ever start a playoff game thread. At least in 2007.
  9. Sweet! I would've been crushed if I didn't get to start a postseason game thread. :P
  10. Is it safe to use bhogg...we did lose today. I think we should, obviously, go with the guys who had the best records in the regular season. The list looks something like this: Playoff Options: -Bhogg (obvious) -UMFan (8-3) -Southpaw19 (7-1) -soccer10K (7-3) -Flames24Rulz (6-4) -Cubbies75 (4-1) People who should not be allowed within the first five posts of the thread: -CT Cubs Fan (0-5) -Vance the Cubs Fan (0-3) Dude, I'm so getting the shaft here. 7-2 suckas... Second best after southpaw (I think). Come on now.
  11. It's an interesting situation. I remember, back in 2003 when the Braves started Ortiz on short rest, all these stats were coming out about how pitchers usually do pretty poorly when their teams bring them out on short rest. Obviously, it makes complete logical sense. On the other hand, though, Z is the type of guy who has seemed to do worse when he's too fresh and pumped up. He loses the sink and starts throwing harder and higher and giving up more fly balls. Maybe it's just perception, but I know I'm not the only one who has the same impression. Playoffs, opening days, coming off extra rest, etc.. On the other hand, Z didn't do all that great when he pitched on short rest earlier this month. So it could be moot. So, I guess the question is... Is Z on short rest in game 4 > gambling on Marquis showing up in Game 4 and having a fresher Z in a potential game 5?
  12. He could do that, and he'd still probably suck. Passion and heart /= talent or effectiveness
  13. I think in 2003 they sold the NLCS tickets at some point during the NLDS...and they started selling WS tickets during the NLCS. Not sure if that vague answer helps at all.
  14. I swear I was thinking the same thing the other day. Some numbers just don't look right. Needs a single digit number. Or maybe he should just have a symbol like Prince or something. He is, after all, Geovany Soto.
  15. NLDS is set to start on Wednesday. Games 3 and 4 are scheduled on Saturday and Sunday at Wrigley. Sorry, I've been drinking all day, so my brain is kinda mush, but, am I right in saying that regardless of how the other divisional/wildcard races play out, the Cubs will host games 3 & 4 on Saturday & Sunday, & that we'll be playing the NL West winner? If the Phillies or Mets win the NL East then we would play the East winner That can't be accurate, because those are the only two teams that can win the East. The first part of that statement is already 100% guaranteed to happen. Oops  If the Phillies or Mets win the wildcard we would play the East winner. Ah.. got it. I should've been smart enough to figure that out myself, but I'm still pretty hungover.

  17. You got Chlorophyll man up there talking about God knows what, and all you can talk about is making out with me!!
  18. I'll be at both games. Count me in.
  19. LOL why not I have pictures from my phone in front of hte marquee but they came out TERRIBLE...
  20. HAHAHAH I TOLD U ALL TO RELAX THIS WEEK asdlkja;lsjfa dfI"M SO SMASHED RIGH TNHOWE JUST GOT HOME GO CUBS GOOOO GO CUBS GOOOOO HEY CHICAGO WADDAYA SAY TEH CUBS ARE GONNA WIN TODAY!!
  21. If they had performed as we expected, that first two months might not have happened, and we might've played the way we have played since June all year. That might be asking a lot, but we'd sure as hell be around 90 wins. Hell, we probably would've made it to 90 if Sori hadn't gotten hurt.
  22. Agreed. Hopefully the ownership stuff is settled soon enough that we can add one more SP (or maybe, dare I say it, Prior stays and contributes at some point next year) and a bat at either SS or in the OF. If that happens, this could be a really good team next year. That's without even mentioning Soto possibly playing regularly and coming into his own, or other young players realizing some potential...(Pie or Hart perhaps?) Just what I was thinking. I'm really excited to see Soto as, hopefully, the everyday catcher.
  23. I'm down.
  24. Couldn't? Or wouldn't? I'll switch on my blackberry when I land in London and call up the scoreboard. If it happens, I'll probably kiss the wife and then go on a very long pub crawl. Well, I look pretty young as it is. Even at 24, I get carded for some 18 y.o. stuff. Would've been hard to get away with it prior to being legit, especially as a guy. I had a relatively easy time of it by the time I was 18/19. The funny thing is, going to school in NY, I was never carded once in the city until about a week after my 21st birthday. Lucky bastard. All my drinking prior to 21 was limited to basements and random friends' or acquaintances' apartments. And sometimes parks, LOL...
