    So two roster holes plugged for less than $16 million. Yesterday we heard from (multiple?) national reporters that the Cubs could still come down with two of Bellinger/Hoskins/Chapman/Montgomery. Hoskins is an awkward fit if Morel and Busch are both on the roster, but a Morel trade for a pitcher could be even more likely now. It’ll be very interesting to see how Jed maneuvers the rest of the offseason from a bit of new found financial and roster flexibility.

    deGrom, who also endured a global pandemic and an elbow injury, has pitched ~200 more innings than Glasnow over the past six years.

    If we’re being charitable I can pump it up to 78 IP per year, including habitual minor league stints, from 2018-2023.* Were doomed! Good for Glasnow though. Super glad for him he wound up in an organization renowned for keeping starting pitchers healthy. *I’m drunk on a train so these numbers might be garbage.

    Lay it out for me. What’s the point you’re trying to make? I love you Bertz…truly one of the most insightful posters on this board. But is your point that we should be considering 2017, damn near two whole presidential terms ago and a year when he was sent down for control issues, as relevant to the discussion?

    Rich Harden was an awesome trade for the Cubs because they already had Z, Lilly, and Demp. In a similar situation, Glasnow is a fun idea. He is not what this rotation needs and far from the make or break to the offseason y’all are making him out to be. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.

    Ah, got it. Squally was naming positive bWAR contributors, so I thought I was forgetting someone else named Howard. Which would have been possible, because I was pretty certain Davis Daniel was someone squally made up.

    I mean, should he have? The most recent year that would leapfrog 2023 by including minor league IPs is 2017, so this just feels like a weird gotcha.

    There is a knock on effect. Other FAs would be wise to wait until Ohtani signs, as there’ll suddenly be three teams that had ~$50 million AAV earmarked for Ohtani that’ll need to explore other options to improve their rosters. Similarly, teams with premiere trade chips like Juan Soto might choose to wait and see if any or all of the three runners up will jump into the bidding.

    I don’t think they’ll make you sell your dick. What do you mean by travel each day? Going from Chicago to Milwaukee multiple times? It’s about a 90 minute train ride, so doable, but the last train from Milwaukee back to Chicago looks to be around 7:30 PM. It wouldn’t be feasible for a night game but for a day game you should be good.

    I tend to think the opposite is true. If Ohtani chooses LAD or TOR, which is highly possible, I’d hate to see that tank the entire offseason for the Cubs because they had such tunnel vision on one player while the rest of the league made headway on all the other available options. I love that the Cubs are leaving no stone unturned and have been mentioned in connection with quite literally every FA and every possible trade option. That doesn’t mean that Ohtani isn’t option #1 by 100 country miles. Back in the Theo/Jed days it often came up that the two were able to divide and conquer. One would take the lead on FA/trade pursuit A, the other would handle FA/trade pursuit B. I’m sure that’s still in play with the Hoyer/Hawkins regime.
