    ESPN has the draft histories of the last 10 years on the first page of their draft coverage. Because I'm a masochist, I saw how bad the Cavs were at drafting. 1996 They took Vitaly Potapenko at 12. 4 of the next 5 picks were Kobe, Nash, Jermaine O'Neal, and Peja. 2001 Took Diop at 8. Afterwards: Joe Johnson, Richard Jefferson, Zach Randolph, Gilbert Arenas, Tony Parker 2002 Dajuan Wagner at 6. Amare Stoudamire and Caron Butler both taken in the following 4 picks. Seriously though, look at that 1996 draft. Iverson, Camby, Abdur-Rahim, Ray Allen, Antoine Walker, Kittles, Kobe, Peja, Nash, O'Neal, and Ilgauskas in the top 20 picks. That's a draft.

    Evaluating candidates that haven't managed, haven't managed in the NL, or haven't managed in quite some time is impossible for us to do with any accuracy. And the important traits in a manager are very difficult to determine from track record anyway. It's the reasoning behind the decisions, not the decisions themselves.

    Agreed. I think he, Gooch, Spector and Gibbs are pretty much the defensive core we can expect in 4 years. Oh, and McBride has hinted he's retiring too. No love for Cherundolo?

    To play devil's advocate, who else would/should take that band? Also, for a fun exercise, how about separating who we can pretty much guarantee will not be around for South Africa. Keller Reyna McBride Hahnemann Pope? Lewis? Berhalter? Would that make Howard the only keeper with any Caps? Does Thornton(who will be 37 in 2010) have any? Eddie Lewis or McBride would have made better captains. I can tell you for certain that Reyna, McB, Pope, Lewis, Wolff, Berhalter, Bocanegra, and Hahnemann won't be there. I'm not convinced Keller won't have an outside shot at being on the roster. Why wouldn't Bocanegra be there?

    When they come sprinting back on the field two minutes are they were rolling around on the ground for two minutes, give them a card. You don't see how impossible that is to enforce? You can't determine how hurt a player is and then do something as serious as card them for it.

    It's impossible to card though. The problem is players embellishing actual fouls worse than they actually are. How can you card someone and basically send a "I know for sure you aren't that hurt" message?

    Point of order: Giles has been criminally unlucky BABIP wise. His power is down a little bit, but he's hitting as many line drives as he always has and his BABIP is 50 points lower.

When dozens of even worse dives and actual fouls have gone uncalled in this cup? Embarrassing. Arena. Screw you. It's the World Cup, you have to go for it. You coached not to lose, and your players showed a lack of preparedness. Beasley and Donovan. You clowns bought into your own overhype, or at the least you played like it. Out of position or not, a complete lack of assertiveness. The Czechs. Screw you. I know we completely sucked against you, but where were the 40 yard upper 90's strikes from Rosicky after you finished laying waste to us? The Italians. Screw you you dirty hacks.     It's also harder to find pitchers who are as good as Schmidt. He's better than Zito. Zito makes a bunch of starts, that's great. It still doesn't mean that he's immune to injury. Schmidt has had very little in the way of injury problems. Yes, he's been ridden hard, but considering how long he's been worked in this fashion, it's not illogical to think he can handle it. Schmidt will likely have less of a market than Zito, is a better pitcher, and isn't a significant injury risk. Zito is a big name pitcher based on what he did before the Cubs even hired Baker. He's been good but not great since, and he won't be worth the contract he signs. As I asked before, how is Schmidt a better pitcher? You have stated this a couple times and haven't backed it up yet. Schmidt gives up fewer baserunners, strikes out more people, walks fewer people(which means K/BB is better also), gives up fewer home runs, gives up fewer hits, and gives up fewer extra base hits(which means OPS against is better also). I didn't think it needed elaboration. Why has his ERA been increasing by the point each year then? Because his poor 2005 happened to be a bookend of his amazing 2003, with a typical year in between. Considering he basically had to go up in '04, and this year he's back to those levels of performance he had before his poor '05, I'm not overly worried about it.

    Schmidt's missed like 5 starts in 5 years. Sorry, but Zito averages around 5 more starts than Schmidt. I was obviously exaggerating(hence the use of "like" and the fact that I spelled out Schmidt's starts the previous post), but there's still nothing showing that Schmidt is an injury risk.

    Why? So you can replace one injury-prone pitcher with another? Schmidt may not have the injury history of Kerry Wood, but he's pitched a lot the last few years and is on the downside of his career. And if Dusty is still the manager, he'll never make it past the all-star break of the first year. I'm not really in favor of giving five year deals to pitchers, but Zito is one I would consider. Schmidt has had 1 year in his career as a full time starter(11 years) where he started less than 25 games. Only 2 where he started less than 29, and the most recent of those was 2001. Schmidt has been used quite a bit, but I'd rather take the risk of injury(even though he hasn't had any so he may be able to handle it) for production that is really good for someone who may or may not be good but will probably be healthy(which is no guarantee with pitching).

    Does that mean it's not travel related? My point is that if you do 2-2-1-1-1 or 2-3-2, do it for every series. Changing something as significant as home court advantage should be consistent, no matter what the reason behind it.
