  1. And the fact his numbers are even in the same ballpark as Soriano's while he'd be lucky to get a contract at all doesn't scare you? Selectivity of numbers used again. He has no real position, doesn't produce runs, can't run but whatever. I think people have hired him because of potential and dumped him because he doesn't really produce. When can we expect you to stop bringing up Walker for no reason? 2008? 2009? Let me know so I can circle the date on my calendar. Or maybe we can just fully establish the Todd Walker scale and compare every potential target for years to come against your questionable impressions of Walker's production. Tim may have some room on the front page for it. In fairness, Rob's the one who started by using Walker as the mystery player in his comparison.
  2. Excellent!! Right on, my reaction to Soriano going to the Angels would be "excellent!". I'm pretty sure most opposed to the signing would agree. Contrary to popular belief(ironically), not everyone thinks the same about every topic. Just because there is an opposition to different topics doesn't mean that the same people are the opposition on every topic, which would be irrational.
  3. With a win over ND, USC will jump Michigan. They've already done so in the two polls (Harris and Coaches) and a win over ND would not only increase USC's computer ranking but make Michigan's worse. True, but a ND win may push Michigan into it. In that case Arkansas would still have a chance to jump them all by beating LSU and Florida. Arkansas doesn't have much of a chance in the computer rankings. There's one computer ranking, for example, that allows you to add up to 5 games and see how the results would turn out. These are approximates, because obviously other results would influence it a little bit-but here's what I put in. Notre Dame beats USC USC beats UCLA Arkansas beats LSU Florida beats Florida State Arkansas beats Florida Here are the results Ohio State-.96511 Michigan-.94305 Notre Dame-.91777 USC-.91593 Arkansas-.90405 Notre Dame, USC, and Arkansas are very close-but Michigan is still a long way away. USC and Florida have a chance to catch Michigan in the computer rankings if things fall their way. I don't think Notre Dame or Arkansas do. But the computer rankings are only a third of the BCS. I don't think it's completely inconceivable(if that word means what I think it means) for Arkansas to overcome that in the human polls considering their next two opponents.
  4. I'm sure Vance is laying me to waste. And McNabb would rip his ACL the week after the trade deadline.
  5. The only way to prove that is to show that Walker's playing time is differently distributed(i.e. to favor his platoon splits) than a "starter" like Soriano. And even if he did get put in more favorable matchups, it speaks that 1-2 marginal to decent players in the right situation can nearly replicate Soriano's production. That truly is funny. Todd Walker can't hit 40 HR's, 40 doubles, and steal any bases. You may not value those numbers, but realty baseball does. Not just selective percentages. last year, someone tried to claim Todd was better offensively than Tejada. What a joke. Realty is greater than fantasy baseball. It's really unfortunate that you have no desire to even attempt to understand what people who argue opposite you are saying. I mean, the Tejada thing has been explained to you in crystal clear terms at least a half dozen times(no exaggeration) and you still keep spouting off that mischaracterized point over and over again. I guess it's easier to just call it "fantasy baseball" instead of realty (sic).

  7. Have you made it to the Arena for a game yet? They really look 100% better this year, especially Lyons and Lawrence. I had no idea what to expect coming in, but after 5 games I wouldn't be surprised if we were a bubble team(and also not surprised if we weren't anywhere near the bubble). I'm real anxious for the Arkansas, Purdue, and Illinois games to see how we stack up against some truly quality opponents.

  9. shall we ignore the fact that the supposed better alternative has an anomalous OBP year inflating his OBP? don't by it all you want, but the difference between Lugo's career OBP and Soriano's career OBP translates to about 10 additional times on base over the course of a 700 AB season. with 1/4 the power. the point about him leading off I have no argument with. you will find me over and over in these threads saying he shouldn't bat leadoff. hopefully Lou will make a change if the OBP takes a plummet. I'm not the one carrying the Lugo torch, although I'll take him at SS as long as we're not going to pay him obscene dollars.
  10. :( Terribly sorry, I forgot/was too hasty to remember you and CubinNY.
  11. SORIANO IS NOT AN EXTREMELY STRONG OFFENSIVE PLAYER Are me and Nilo the only people that understand that last year was an anomaly? Quoting nonsense like 40-40-40 and RBI is bad enough, but the entire point is that he had a career year and he's very likely not going to do that again. On a tangential note, how does everyone think Soriano's approach is going to age? He doesn't have the most compact swing in the world, which could lead to big problems once he loses a tick of bat speed. the 40-40-40 thing is a little silly, but one could argue that 04-05 were the anomoly. OPS+ 2002 131 2003 128 2004 98 2005 110 2006 132 how can it be an anomoly if it happened three out of the past five years? OPS+ hides Soriano's inability to get on base(I know you've argued about the marginal benefit on this point before, but I'm going to have to disagree). It was the first year he has EVER put up a .340+ OBP. EVER. And we just gave him a truckload of money to be our leadoff hitter and RF, and his (in)ability to get on base is mediocre to awful for both(even with the lower than "expected" production of RF's).

Tiger won't your numbers also show that he did all that last year in a pitchers park , while also raising his walk rate? The context of the season isn't nearly as relevant as the fact that he's 30 years old and had never put up that production before. And while I'm semi-ranting I can't say I'm thrilled with him leading off or playing RF(less concerned with the RF part).

  14. kctigers pointed this out last time it was brought up, but of the 34 walk increase, 13 of those were intentional.
  15. Mizzou had a bad day shooting and made some poor decisions with the ball, but the defensive pressure and free throw shooting late secure a 6 point win against Davidson. Next up is Stephen F. Austin the night of the kU football game.
  16. If he has a season like last year again, then I dont think there's a better FA option out there. Soriano's production last year is basically equivalent to Drew's career numbers. Right. Except that Soriano will more than likely play everyday. Drew's much more iffy. I'd rather risk the health of someone who has only broken his hand the last 3 years than risk a 30 year old repeating a career year in a contract year. Much much rather. He would've been significantly cheaper and a better defender too.

  18. Sullivan says he's likely to play CF. Even a mediocre Soriano puts up incredible CF numbers. If by incredible you mean middle of the pack, then I agree.
  19. Co-sign. Too many people expect Hendry to sign people like Soriano to 4 year deals, and trade crap like Roberto Novoa for something worthwhile. Would you be happy with signing Michael Barrett to a 7/100 extension? Of course not, because that would be a heinous overpayment to someone who is a good, but not spectacular offensive player and a below average defender. Soriano is the exact same thing, except we gave him the contract. The Barrett analogy is missing something, though. On the market, Barrett doesn't have that kind of value; Soriano, we can only believe at this point, does. While the production is similar, the Value is not, for better or worse. It's fun to talk about what we are paying for production, but it's not that simple. We did what we had to do to get "another Barrett," not what made "sense" by regular logic. Except that we way overpaid for that "other Barrett", when there were others out there that were as good or better, and cheaper too.

Soriano is the exact same thing, except we gave him the contract. Show me Barrett has this... and I will buy into your argument... I could care less about meaningless accolades like 40-40-40, especially when those 40 SB come with 17 CS. The point is that he's not going to repeat that. 3 year production(04-06): .287/.337/.489/.826 .276/.345/.479/.824 .307/.368/.517/.885 or .280/.324/.484/.808 .268/.309/.512/.821 .277/.351/.560/.911

  22. I'm much more worried about his sucking at the age of 31 relative to that deal. Maybe he will. But on the other hand, maybe this is a sign that he's learned his lesson relative to guys that seem to have an injury bug following them around re: JD Drew. Soriano and Drew were the two guys that gave us the best chance to win now, and getting one of them would be a great accomplishment. So you are ignoring Sori's 2004 and 2005 seasons, yet harping on Drew's injuries from 4+ years ago? If Sori does not reproduce his 06 season then he isn't going to give us the best chance to win now, definitely not as good as if Drew reproduces his 2006, 2005, 2004, etc. And you are ignoring Soriano's 2003 and 2002 stats. He still couldn't get on base then either.
  23. I'm not being sarcastic. He isn't worth 8 figures. Hell most players in baseball are not worth their contracts. He is overpaid, and probably overrated, but still, match him up with Lee, and Aram...and we have some major thunder in the lineup now. No, he's not major thunder, that's the point. For crying out loud, Barrett is probably just as good if not better offensively after they both regress from their career years.
  24. Of course he's not. If you're being sarcastic, he's most definitely not worth 8 figures. If you're not, then why are we not more upset about giving him an obscene amount of money and years? Hendry finally paying big bucks to a "premier" FA means nothing if the guy isn't top of the line like Soriano isn't.
  25. I never thought I would have somone tell me a 40/40 guy is not very good. Priceless. He's 30 years old and he has a career .280/.325/.510 line. I'm not saying he sucks, but he's not worth 8 figures, never mind the astronomical rumors that his NY hype and Boras have brought on.
