  1. Because mediocre players routinely disappear quickly in their 30's. Think Troy O'Leary who was very similar to Jones and out of the league by 33. Another br.com comparable is Mel Hall, done at 31. Remember Jeff Blauser? Mediocre career highlighted by a resurgent age 31 season, which was followed by a disastrous 32 and 33 season before he was gone. He's not good and past his prime, assuming this has been a fluke is a big gamble. Man I hate to defend Jones but I'm just not buying it. Two players off the top of my head that compare to Jones are Shannon Stewart and Tori Hunter. Hunter is 31 and Stewart is 33. Both are having very solid years. I just don't think there's this magic age number where players just fall off a cliff. It's a slow, sometimes steady decline and after Jones numbers last year there's no way he's at the end of his career. Stewart is coming off the 2 worst years of his career. He's also a better hitter than Jones and more patient.
  2. Reinsdorf also has to worry about not pissing off one of his minority owners in Zell.
  3. To reiterate, Pie had a bad 2 week stretch(7 for 48), and was pretty much never seen from again. He was replaced with "hot hand" Angel Pagan, who's now 8 for his last 41. Now apparently the trendy pick is Jones, who hit a few doubles after hitting like a paraplegic for the first half. Pie is the best player out of the three, the best defender, the one with the long term future, he's the one that should've been playing all along. The "hot hand" thing is completely fine when you're trying to maximize production out of marginal players, like is the case with Theriot/Fontenot/DeRosa/Izturis. But who thinks Ward(18 for 55 on the year, 8 for his last 18) should take over first base from Lee(6 for his last 34)? The same logic applies to CF. Now, I don't completely hate Pie going to Iowa to get some at bats to get some positive work in before coming back, but his stay in Iowa needs to be a very short one.
  4. That's Zell, he's the one selling the Cubs and doesn't have that obligation.
  5. Again, who other than Reinsdorf is going to oppose it? Is it MLB owners or just NL ones? It's all MLB ones. The only three I can think of who wouldn't support his bid would be Angelos, Glass and Reinsdorf. It doesn't matter. They're all pawns of Selig. If Reinsdorf is voting it down, then everyone is voting it down cause Reinsdorf and Selig are one and the same. What? I don't believe Reinsdorf has the clout he had back when he caused the 1994 lockout/strike. There's a whole slew of new owners since he last ran around with Selig on a leash. Going by that wikipedia link, there are 19 new owners since 1994(2 of them were expansion franchises).
  6. Problem is that the Cavs are in a huge cap crunch on two of their two RFA's (Pavlovic and Varajeo) that will put them over the luxury tax threshold if they get a significant enough offer from another team. Don't know if they view either of those players in the 12-15 mil a year range (dollar for dollar match on the tax) I'm not very well versed in the NBA cap structure, but I believe you. I think that's a different argument though, as I doubt jaydee was considering the Cavs cutting Varejao and Pavlovic when he made that comment. On that argument, from the brief stuff I've read, trading Hughes or Gooden seem to be popular solutions to the cap problem among some fans.
  7. This is the best I got: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Major_League_Baseball_principal_owners EDIT: Wow! Steinbrenner paid only $8.7 million for the Yankees...nice return on investment! Thanks. So out of the crusty old owners, a dozen of them are new since 2000, and only 5(including the Tribune) have had their teams since the 80's.
  8. I'd be real interested to see the tenures for current MLB franchise owners.
  9. Rundle's heating up. .308/.341/.538 over his last 10 games (41 PA's).
  10. It's not the FA class that I'm upset about. Let's be honest, this class was complete garbage and it is real pathetic how guys like Rashard Lewis are getting max deals. But I'm upset with Paxson's inability to pull a trigger on a deal. If those rumors were right, Paxson had to have been crazy to not pull the deal on Gasol. Does anyone really expect this team (with no real upgrades) to go farther than we were this past season? Cleveland isn't going to get any worse and we still can't match up with Detroit's guards. yes, since most of the bulls core players are young and still improving. cant say that about anyone on detroit, or cleveland really (face it cavs fan lebron is extremely mature for his age and his peak wont be much better than he is now) Since you brought it up... If the Bulls core is all young enough to be capable of improvement, then players like Gibson, Pavlovic, Varejao, and LeBron(yes he's big and strong, he can improve other areas of his game without lifting weights) certainly can too. Detroit had 2 first rounders this year. And there's also Orlando, Washington, and New Jersey to be reckoned with.
  11. Did anyone else watch the championship game when the announcer was like "this guy has the 'it' factor. Just like Derek Jeter. He's got it all going for him and he's a winner" yada, yada. I looked at his stats and wasn't terribly impressed but is he the real deal? Did Wilken get a steal for him in the 4th? He's a 21 year old college player at Mesa. I'd like to see him perform two levels higher before getting excited about him. No, i agree with you. This was a few days after the cubs drafted him, when an announcer at the championship game had a man crush on him. Just wondering if I was missing something about him. I am by no means comparing him to jeter, just the schmuck at espn. Yeah, I've heard he's considered Mr. Intangibles too. I don't think that's going to keep him from being a huge reach in the 4th though. Joe Simokaitis was Mr. Intangibles for Nebraska, unfortunately that didn't make him any good at the plate.
  12. They're putting on a show for him, with 4 runs in the first. Mottram with a bases clearing double, Wyatt, Wright, and Clevenger with singles, and Smith drew a walk.
  13. I fixed it: Inherited Runner ERA No, I knew what you meant, you still can't do it. Well, I shouldn't say that. You can, but it wouldn't have any value because people have different amount of inherited runners.
  14. Inherited ERA is an impossibility.
  15. Do the Fire have anyone on their team taller than 5-8?

  17. Yeah, but did he take off his helmet and hold it in his hand as he ran/roamed?
  18. Well, if Roast ever wants to change his name, now he's got the perfect solution.
  19. Ah, so this is how they are going to screw up bringing Soto to Chicago. Pie having a poor two weeks at the plate does not mean he needs his swing revamped. Maybe Lee will get through waivers so he can work out his current struggles in Iowa.
  20. Mesa won 14-13 in 10 innings. Barney finished 5/5 with 2 doubles and a walk, Thomas was 2 for 5 with a triple and 2 Ks, Leon Johnson went 3 for 6, and Luis Bautista was 3 for 5 with a double and HR.
  21. RickeyAndTheHendersons: aw man you can't take the third person away from rickey hennerson! rickey hennerson never sees with his own two eyes, rickey hennerson imagines a camera up and behind his left shoulder he manipulates with a lil old analog stick RickeyAndTheHendersons: real useful when rickey hennerson has to kill zombie monsters, one time i was up to bat, carl pavano came at rickey hennerson, so rickey hennerson pulled out a shotgun and let him have it, rickey hennerson made sure he bought it at a high price
  22. Shoppach for Jones would be bloody outstanding. And if you had to follow baseball only by Christina Karl's writing, you might come to the conclusion that every team lost 100 games because all the players are so bad and all the decisions each team made were so poor.
