  2. I'm really upset that I went through most of the effort of making this fake tweet and looking up the original Muskat reference before finding that Kershaw was the mistaken player. I'm gonna post this anyway.
  3. The Warthen slider is so nasty that the speed and magnitude of its break also applies to ligaments of those throwing it!
  4. I don't want the Cardinals to have the privilege of making the playoffs, and I don't want the Mets to have the dignity of playing a full series.
  5.   That's the "we woulda won State" of professional sports fandom.
  6. what part of Full Kyle wasn't clear, he put it in all caps
  7. I've always been a casual soccer fan, but seeing a game in one of the really good environments(for me it was Seattle) really goes a long way to hooking you on MLS. It's the closest thing I've found to the best parts of a college football gameday environment in a professional sport.
  8. Dream big, hope the Giants sweep their last 4 with the Dodgers and we get a 4 way tie plus 2 of those teams tying for the West. I know we are looking at advantageous scenarios for the Cubs but how about a 3 (or 4) way tie in the AL East with those teams also tying for the WC spots with like Detroit Now you're talking. Just make the middle 10 teams of the league play every day for a week in tiebreakers.

  10. I wonder if usage of the cut-change v. the change with fade is particularly different. From the heatmap sure looks like the bases empty change is the one with fade to induce swings and misses, while the men on heatmap looks like the cut change trying to induce soft contact.
  11. I think a more likely and realistic explanation is that Jake was struggling with his mechanics and the slider(his pitch with the most movement) suffered most of all, so he started shying away from it to ensure he threw as many strikes as possible. If he's using it more and not throwing fewer strikes, that bodes well for him having found something mechanically that might portend a bit more early-2016 Jake than Summer 2016 Jake in the postseason.
  12. This year Bryce Harper would be in a 3-way tie for 7th on the Cubs in fWAR.
  13. Game 4, the silly walkoff loss in Arizona. Moved the Cubs to 3-1 while the Pirates were 4-0.

  16. What's fascinating to me is that there has to be some type of organizational component to it. Maybe they're actively seeking out guys who do this well, or maybe some combination of Bosio's teaching or the team's approach to sequencing/game-planning lends itself to more soft contact. Fangraphs is using different data so it's difficult to use that to draw too many conclusions, but looking at Lester, Lackey, and Montgomery(since Arrieta and Hendricks don't have a valid 'pre-Cubs' sample), there doesn't appear to be a sharp movement in batted ball types before and after joining the Cubs. So maybe that leaderboard is a bit of an offseason wishlist if they want to add a SP, Smyly is a half bit more interesting to me seeing his name so high.
  17. If the Bears win, there will only be two 2-0 teams in the NFC. 5 in the AFC.
  18. Soler. Also Fowler, Zobrist, and whoever the starting C are have hit HR at a 15+ season pace.
  19. Donovan just came on in the 75th minute and it took him about 30 seconds to score on SKC. [tweet] [/tweet]
  20. The Brewers have an enormous team lead in stolen bases, entering today they have 39 more than the 2nd place team, which is about the same as the gap between 2nd and 12th. Yet they're only 7th in BsR, the Cubs are 5th despite stealing more than 100 fewer bases.
  21. Did he try to catch it? Nope, his motion had him facing first base on a line drive headed straight for his hip, so his instinct was to absorb it instead of moving his arm. http://m.mlb.com/video/v1171629783/detcle-carrasco-struck-on-pitching-hand-exits-game/?game_pk=449077
  22. Pirates are well on their way to sweeping a double header against the Reds. Barring catastrophe on their end, a Giants win means the Cardinals are closer to the Pirates than the 2nd wild card. At the moment standings: SF +1 NYM - STL 2 PIT 5
  23. I want terrible things to happen to Scooter Gennett
