That would be difficult to suss out considering that Montero exclusively caught the early good-Jake starts. In the second half, Montero has caught Jake 5 times: 33.2 IP, 19 H, 8 ER, 28/9 K/BB, 2 HR Only start with more than 2 runs given up was the game at the Cell.
No, but I don't trust Montgomery the starter as much as the average I don't think. Also Puig killing the ball since his recall gives them a couple real lefty mashers along with Turner.
He needs at bats to see if he can be a postseason pinch hitter and that's a way to get him those at bats without the mockery of putting him in the outfield or something. He's not going to start any meaningful games or fill in anywhere but 2B in case of injury. I think there's a chance with Joe's usage lately he's thinking of a seal start at 3B in the playoffs. Which is such a inefficient use of resources. That requires La Stella being a better option than both Baez and Soler, which strikes me as pretty unlikely given how well Soler has swung the bat and how great Javy is defensively.

He barely makes the bottom 20. EDIT: That's pure counting UZR, on a rate basis he's 6th worst. i'm dying to know who the other 5 are http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=3b&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=150&type=1&season=2016&month=0&season1=2016&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=24,a Wallace, Villar, Valencia, Peralta, Wright (!)
Ross, Montero/Contreras, Szczur, Coghlan, Baez, and La Stella are the only real candidates for the bench. They all make it if they go to an 11 man staff, but that would mean no Hammel, Cahill, or Smith, and only one of Montgomery/Wood.
Montgomery isn't going to start any more games, so Zastryzny definitely isn't going to start any. He should get some middle relief chances though since the guys that do start are not going to be pushed very hard.
The leverage thing is a symptom, not a cause. For example, in Javy's career: Innings 1-3: .769 OPS Innings 4-6: .656 Innings 7-9: .584 Or to really get to the problem, run values the last 2 years: v. Fastballs of all types: +5.6 v. Curves: -3.9 v. Sliders: -3.2 v. Changeups: -0.2 Javy is exploitable because he hasn't shown he can recognize off-speed well enough to lay off or hit it with authority, so he's exploitable by starters with the right stuff(hence Maddon shielding him from FB/SL RHSP, especially in the first half) and most relievers(who have a strong FB and one good off speed pitch). That's the true problem, it's a fixable problem but I certainly understand pessimism that he won't fix it.
Javy put himself in that spot by swinging at a ball out of the zone earlier, but I'm not going to fault him for swinging at that last pitch. It missed the zone by a hair and would've been a great take if he had done it.
I've been saying that for a couple years now. But the guy took a month off and now hasn't hit for a month since coming back. I'd try and get him more playing time this week to see if he can get it together but I'm not sure he can hit anymore. It's not an attitude thing but taking a month off to hang at the jersey shore hasn't helped and could have had a real negative effect. That's fair, and I would definitely get him some starts in these 2 weeks to give him a chance to more definitively show if his bat is there or not. If the alternative is another LH bench bat that the jury is still out on(Coghlan, maybe Montero), or a RH defensive replacement(Almora), I'm going to rely on La Stella's track record though.
words words words words words He has a poor attitude, hasn't hit a lick since coming back up, and plays below average defense at 3rd. What warrants a playoff spot for him over the other two? La Stella can hit, he doesn't do much else Coghlan can maybe hit, he doesn't do much else Almora can not hit, he plays great defense but this is a roster that will have Szczur or Baez available as defensive replacements(or not need them in a Bryant/Fowler/Heyward OF) La Stella gets the roster spot
The other side is that I bet he loves not needing to have a Kawasaki or Watkins type on the bench to be a SS caddy. But I agree that they aren't going to be in a hurry to find more ABs for Baez than he's getting right now.
