    This is a bit bittersweet because Dewees is one of my favorite types of draftees to follow, but I like this. Dewees needs to hit a fair bit more than he has to be an MLB starter, and Longenhangen's review of his swing didn't fill me with confidence that he'll be able to do that. He could still be useful as a deluxe 5th OF even then, but you also don't weep for deluxe 5th OFs either. Mills is an optionable arm that appears to be free of major injury problems, throws strikes, gets K's, and has decent reviews of his stuff. He had some problems with HR in AAA but that appears to be a short lived problem whatever the cause(6 HR his first 29 IP, 2 HR his last 29). He doesn't have much of a platoon split, whether you consider that a positive or negative. Really, once they let him start he's been on a pretty consistent trajectory until he hit that AAA rough patch, so letting this org's player development work on him while he gets some extended Iowa time could have some nice results.

    The Dodgers' problem is less that they can't hit LHP(some of that will correct itself), but more that for a team that most expect to easily clear 90 wins, they're surprisingly light on people good at hitting.

[tweet] [/tweet] yeah, they seem to love the dodgers excessively and *slightly* under-love the cubs (or they wayyyyy over love the dodgers, depending on how conservative you expect it to be) I'm not a BP subscriber, but this seems to be the same LAD offense = CHC offense nonsense that we were laughing at before. Also it seems likely that PECOTA weights historical performance a bit too heavily. You can see that in LAD's offense being propped up by older performance(Puig, Gonzalez, etc) and in the Mets forecast in that tweet(Granderson, Wright, etc)

    Especially in the playoffs, it's baffling that they just don't play the full period, or shorten it to 10 minutes and play the full period.

    Is there an article that's talked about this? Curious to read more. Rather than a full length article, it's just been referenced in a couple of fangraphs pieces over the offseason. Can't remember which ones in particular, though. Any players that you remember? I just went back 3 years and the only SP I could find was Nicasio.

    Admittedly I only eyeballed his MLB experience and took his DFA as proof he was out of options, but if he does have one left then that's great. brett and bruce miles refer to sending him to AAA while other outlets prior to the deal talked about him as a guy w/o options. presumably they DFA'd him for 40 man reasons, when the Rockies acquired Holland. Sharma says he has an option too, awesome. Love this move in that light.

    I was thinking about this when double checking his repertoire. He'd probably sit 95-96 out of the pen and throws a slider, plus he hasn't had huge strike throwing problems. On the other hand, he can't get anyone to swing and miss, and the pen is already super crowded with Davis, Rondon, Strop, Uehara, Edwards, Grimm, Montgomery/Anderson, & Duensing/Zastryzny/Smith.

    Not optionable, but that'll work for a 7th starter. Especially since he stands a fair chance of being able to be outrighted if he doesn't show big improvement in ST.

    I forget the rules; if we give the Yankees some compensation, Smith can start the season in the Cubs' minor league system? That seems too easy.. We basically have to trade for Smith to be able to option him. The cost isn't likely to be high, but there's no formal mechanism that the Yankees are powerless against, so if they love Smith they don't have to agree to it and could wait for the Cubs to return him.

    Serbia friendly at halftime. Nagbe looks very good, Bedoya continues to be nondescript even though there's options like Morris who play that exact position in the 18, Marshall doesn't look as good as he does for club, Garza was lucky not to give up a PK, and I wish we had a more ascendent replacement for Jones. Are we really going to start Lletget in a crucial WCQ? Eventually there's hope Roldan grows into that role but it's hard to see that happening this cycle.

    Castro had a carrying hit tool, while Torres doesn't really standout anywhere. He doesn't make a ton of contact, hit for a high average, show tremendous plate discipline, hit for significant power, or play terrific defense. Castro's peak as a prospect also came after he hit .367/.413/.560 in AA and got promoted to Chicago. I don't think his wording really implies that. Just the hopes and dreams of a top 5 prospect (in all of baseball). Correct, there's a significant gap between one of the top 5 players in baseball and a guy who is not likely to be one of the 5 best players on a good team. Top 5 prospects in baseball shouldn't be the latter.

    There's still more than a few evaluators that see Torres as a future 2B, any comparison between him and Russell starts with him way in the hole on defense alone. He also doesn't have Russell's power, makes only a smidge more contact, and doesn't hit for a better average than Russell.

    He's a very good prospect, but you're basically hoping and praying he becomes Placido Polanco. That's no insult, Polanco was very good for a number of years, but that's not the hopes and dreams of someone in the Top 5 of all of baseball. He's high risk of being a second baseman, he had a .775 OPS at High A, and his K rate is high for someone who isn't going to slug like someone like Russell. You don't even really need something to collapse for Torres to be a non-descript major leaguer, just the attrition of his production at the 2 levels he needs to ascend through would do it.

    *2015 Cubs have 4 starters with 31+ starts* well the Cubs got lucky with pitcher health, let's see what happens when *2016 Cubs have 5 pitchers with 29+ starts* okay that's lucky too and if they get hit with injuries then they'll feel the pain

    Definitely not, Montgomery has to explicitly fail out of the rotation. Otherwise as things stand you're signing yourself up for having 2 incumbent SP after '17 with the benefit being that Anderson is hopefully a small bit better and doesn't have his arm fall off. I hate to say it, but I'd rather see Montgomery in the pen for the first month or two. He's maxed out around 150 IP in the minors, and only threw 100 IP last year. I'd rather he not be gassed at the end of the season when things actually matter -- it's not like we're projected to actually need him to win the division outright. Give Anderson the 5th SP gig out of spring training. Let him start while he's healthy. If by some miracle all of our starters are still healthy and effective when Montgomery is ready to transition back to starting, we can explore using a six man rotation or trading Anderson. I'm not super worried on that front, but if that's a concern, then just go to a 6 man rotation right away. You'll still have 7 relievers in the pen and everyone wins. Anderson gets to pitch without an injury elsewhere, and Montgomery gets his workload managed.

    Came to post the same. How is that not a safety or at least down at the one? I don't know the exact wording, but I'm pretty sure the rules are written to be pretty lenient on recoveries that carry you into the end zone. On one of the replays it looked like one of the defender's legs was already in the end zone as he grabbed the ball, so he gets a fair amount of leeway to roll into the end zone.

    Warren was really the 6th starter out of camp, right? Yes, forgot about him. Similar logic applies, although Warren was better as a starter. On the topic of rotation depth, Texas is hoping Ross can be good to go by the stretch run.
