  1. Is it the uniform or does Jansen look thinner
  2. Finally, now the Cardinals can shed their fun-loving goof off persona and take baseball more seriously.
  3. Not NHL, but still. [tweet] [/tweet]
  4. You don't have to unless the need arises, because Szczur doesn't really belong on the 25 man. The 40 man roster isn't much of an obstacle anyway, if Szczur isn't around there's an open spot, and Andreoli's presence on the 40 man itself proves that it's not stuffed to the gills with quality that you can't easily find space for someone. I'm fairly certain Andreoli isn't on the 40 man. Sorry, I misread the previous posts and didn't double check. In either case the point is the same, there's no shortage of people who could be pulled off the 40 man.
  5. Why put Zagunis on the 40 man before you have to? You have 4 quality outfielders on the major league team and a Javy Baez that can push 2 more there. The 5th outfielder, Iowa shuttle guy is supposed to be someone who gets no playing time, admittedly more like last year's Kawasaki than Szczur. Unless someone loses a leg again. 6. Andreoli is cannon fodder, it's Zagunis who takes up Szczur's mantle as a RH reserve OF
  7. That Jones catch was so similar to Griffey robbing Lou Collins in Little Big League that I had to stop for a second to make sure I hadn't sat on the remote.
  8. I would guess that Szczur probably loses out and gets DFA'd, with Almora on the roster he's pretty redundant, and his specific skills(bench RH bat, CF defender) are duplicated by others outside Almora. Happ's showing this spring also illustrates he has competition coming behind him. Also I can't imagine that too many teams are going to scramble to find room on their 25 man roster for Szczur at the start of the season, he's already basically at his ceiling and it's a 4th/5th OF, so the risk isn't that significant. As far as 3rd catcher goes, I'm not familiar with Corporan as a defender, but statistically he's a shade below average at throwing runners out, and he's consistently been an above average framer. That seems fine for a AAA replacement, especially since the team seems to think Schwarber might catch at least a handful of games too.
  9. Probably a good time to bump this: viewtopic.php?p=149881#p149881 In short, Contreras has a better pop time than Ross and even though he's dealt with the slowest delivering pitchers in baseball he still catches 44% of runners(RHP and steals of 2nd only).
  10. I think it's both. Hendricks had 3 pickoffs in the regular season(and 4 in 2015), which from a quick compilation looks to be high up there for RHP. Here's the NL leaders: Cueto 5 Colon 4 Nelson 4 Hendricks 3 Teheran 3 Wacha 3 DeSclafani 3 Gray 3 I imagine once you control for number of runners on first base, Hendricks looks just as good if not a bit better too. But it's not so good that I'd expect what we saw in the postseason, where he picked off 3 guys, one in each of his last 3 starts. Different person each time too, Reddick, Lindor, and Ramirez.
  11. Doesn't change the direction of your point, but OSU was also extremely slow tempo in 2015-16. Tempo adjusted offense they went from 153rd to 1st this year w/ Underwood. Dude knows his offense.
  12. Underwood is a good coach, I was annoyed when Mizzou hired Kim Anderson that they didn't consider him before he did what he did at OSU. He's not likely to turn Illinois into a blue blood that runs roughshod over the Big 10, but that's not likely for any hire you can make, except at about 10 or so schools.
  13. The WBC is essentially down to a regular single elimination bracket. USA/DR play today(no tiebreaker shenanigans, winner advances) for the right to play Japan in one semi, Netherlands/Puerto Rico is set as the other.
  14. Off the top of my head, because he didn't reach base, most of the time by strikeout. EDIT: Mostly right, 0 for 5 with a K, the K coming from Lester. He did reach on Javy's error in the 1st, but it was with 2 outs and Hendricks had already picked him off in Game 3, so he stayed home.
  15. Marquette is getting homered with a 7 seed as an opponent, yeesh
  16. He was not, there was a reverse angle the broadcast eventually showed that was more clear.
  17. The new market efficiency is having the best pitcher of the generation and 15 half broken starters The new market efficiency is winning your division by 1 game every year instead of 10 That's how hard Julio Urias will be throwing by the time he's allowed to throw 200 innings Adrian Gonzalez said it was 93-94 mph The Dodgers didn't think it was a problem because their entire offense couldn't hit 83 mph heat from lefties last year
  18. http://i.imgur.com/lOMnTF2.gif
  19. For me it's more that the spring training results are reminding me of what I was very concerned about in September/October. It's part of why I was so gung ho about signing Jansen.
  20. Counterpoint: Rondon is notoriously terrible in March you dummy, in 2014 he had an ERA north of 7 and last year he had an ERA north of 12.
  21. Rondon came in for Venezuela in the 8th and promptly gave up a game tying home run to Jones and a single to Yelich. Now is probably a good time to point out there's a nontrivial chance Rondon is completely broken, given his injury, struggles afterward, and the time since his TJS. EDIT: After an Arenado pop up, Hosmer goes deep off Rondon, 4-2 USA
  22. In my head I know Scott Drew would win games in most places, but I can't let go of how terrible he is once the whistle blows. He's like Rick Barnes with all the dials turned to 11.
  23. USMNT for the next WCQ games: GOALKEEPERS (3): Brad Guzan, Tim Howard, Nick Rimando DEFENDERS (8): John Brooks, DaMarcus Beasley, Geoff Cameron, Omar Gonzalez, Michael Orozco, Tim Ream, Jorge Villafaña, Walker Zimmerman MIDFIELDERS (9): Kellyn Acosta, Alejandro Bedoya, Michael Bradley, Fabian Johnson, Jermaine Jones, Sebastian Lletget, Darlington Nagbe, Dax McCarty, Christian Pulisic FORWARDS (4): Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey, Jordan Morris, Bobby Wood Yedlin has a knock so he's not coming.
  24. Only because it was explained or understood incorrectly. Innings have always been based on outs and not the simple fact baseball happened, it's why you can have an ERA of infinity. I'm talking more about using RA/9 as a first tiebreaker, instead of something more sensible like run differential(which Mexico would have won v. Venezuela/Italy). I wasn't aware if people didn't realize/calculate the tiebreaker properly.
