Yeah, anyone who got first round money or a big IFA bonus is going to be difficult to extend if they're worth extending. Contreras is the closest, but he's the least proven and plays the most physically demanding position. I could see something with Hendricks happening, assuming he doesn't completely crater like the last couple starts have been.

The Rockies, who you might recall from such hits as 'what if we gave up the number 11 pick to sign a middle infielder to play 1B' and 'why are all our players breaking their bones', are now 5 games clear of the Dodgers and 7 clear of the Giants in the West. Fangraphs' projected standings has them set to tie the Cardinals for the 2nd wild card.

Catching up on the first inning, that's not the first time that Cervelli has kicked out at a baserunner while 'receiving' a throw to the plate, which seems to have no other purpose than to spike said baserunner.

Being able to stay hitting, whether it's DH or position on non-pitching days apparently is a big deal to him. No team should be stupid enough to offer that, by almost all accounts I've read he's a non-prospect, essentially, as a hitter. He's producing at a pretty high level with the bat, and non-prospect as a hitter is much harsher than I recall, but given the swing and miss and risk to his health as a pitcher, I don't think you'd see him as a 2 way player. It might take him time to realize it, but he would be ideal for this iteration of the Cubs roster, where he can basically help lengthen the pen and shorten the bench by being an early pinch hitter that's better than the Arrietas or Travis Woods of the world. -

Heyward had a .344 wOBA this year entering today's game(.329 at this instant). His career total is .336, including .346, .329, and .344 in the years before joining the Cubs. He's snagged a couple singles from BABIP luck but the rest of his peripherals are not abnormal. Treating Heyward's 2017 as if it is flukish or out of the ordinary for him is strange.

And that's with something like a .220 babip The BABIP 'progression' would probably come in the form of a couple homers turning into doubles and a few BIP to K's, but even then he'd be doing very well so it's nice his hot start isn't at all flukish. -
The Dodgers, Giants, Cardinals, Pirates, and Mets are all under .500.
