  1. Pretty sure they don't have that issue anymore Taylor's emergence and Puig and Turner pulling their weight have made a big difference, but if given the choice I'd still rather throw LHP at a lineup featuring Seager, Gonzalez, Bellinger, and Grandal.
  2. There are only so many seasons with Rizzo and Bryant both healthy and producing at a high level, plus guys like Russell, Contreras, Baez, etc. on cheap deals, I would not be okay with shying away from a significant addition just because the first half was a little disappointing. They still have 62% odds of winning the division. Also it's 3.5 years of control for Quintana, he makes future offseasons much easier to manage. FA's and teams would have a lot of leverage if the Cubs needed to add 2-3 SP in one offseason, now it's potentially only 1 if they like Montgomery(or Butler).
  3. This is also example 526 of the front office prioritizing durability when it comes to sinking significant assets in a SP. Also another example of the front office moving early before the market takes away options or changes their price dramatically.
  4. Yes, Quintana has a contract through next year and there are team options for 2019 and 2020. 8.85 million in 2018, 10.5 million in 2019, 11.5 million in 2020.
  5. I'm really wishing I had verbalized that I was starting to worry about Eloy's lack of average. That hit tool was supposed to be the thing that made him more Miggy than Soler, but I promise this isn't hindsight. Also the repeated injuries on a big dude aren't great harbingers. Still pains me to lose him, but at least it's for a target I love.
  6. Quintana has better peripherals than his performance this year, and a big chunk of his struggles are from a slow start(maybe the WBC impacted how he prepped?), and everything I said about Fulmer applies equally to Quintana. AL to NL, crap framing catchers to above average, and better defense(Sox are better than the Tigers here so the impact is smaller).
  7. Sad about losing Eloy, very happy about getting Quintana
  8. That's what I get for not double checking. I remember Schwarber now(Cameron's gonna be petty about him even if he wins an MVP), but I had missed Russell entirely.
  9. Contreras checks in at #19 on Fangraphs' Trade Value series, the first Cub in the Top 50 or honorable mention so far. Rizzo and Bryant were 6 and 3 respectively last year and weren't mentioned in those that fell out entirely(and why would they), so they're in the Top 10 again. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2017-trade-value-11-to-20/
  10. Maples has 14 K's in his last 5 outings, covering...4.2 IP
  11. The all-star game doesn't determine home field anymore.
  12. And they star on Drunktales (awhooooo-ooh)
  13. The answer is 'this is why neither of Russell or Baez is getting traded', but if we go along with the hypothetical, odds are it would be someone currently outside the organization.
  14. I remember sneaky trying to convince me that Travis Wood was really, really good at HR prevention. I'm still skeptical that it is a long-term skill instead of simple variance. That's fine, his HR prevention wasn't this good last year either. But even if you just consider his 2017 an extension of his 2016 performance(in 2017 he's been better in most areas), that's a guy who had 3.0 fWAR in 26 starts(3.7 per 32 starts), and would likely see improvement from AL to NL, better framing catchers in front of him, and better defense behind him. And you'd have him for 5+ years. I wouldn't expect Fulmer to be a guy who starts Game 1 of a playoff series, but that's not all that necessary today either. Plus he doesn't have much financial cost so you can pay Darvish 4/120 or whatever to give you some upside, plus potentially sway Otani this year or next, etc.
  15. Fulmer has 43 starts at the MLB level(275 IP) and has been worth 6.1 fWAR, and his ERAs are better than the FIPs that power fWAR. The only thing he appears to be really, really good at is HR prevention so I get the skepticism, but even if you don't buy his 2017 that's still *5.5 years* of a guy who seems a pretty good bet to be a 3+ win pitcher.
  16. It appears that the ultimate source for that rumor is Jim Bowden.
  17. Maples now has 24 K in 11.2 IP at AA. He also has 8 BB in those 11.2 IP. DJ Wilson went 4 for 5 with a 2B and HR
  18. make Judge hit first in the finals so he has to go the full round
  19. it looked like Judge was pulling off a few of those and they went into the upper deck in right center
  20. if I get deprived of multiple rounds of Judge by a guy who isn't even an all-star i will riot
  21. outside of baseball, how often do you think Charlie Blackmon wears sleeves? I'm thinking 20% tops
