  1. Craig Brooks has a 15/2 K/BB in his last 5 outings(8.2 IP) for Tennessee, it'll be interesting to see if he's turning a corner and regaining the form he had at Myrtle Beach(20.1 IP, 0.44 ERA, 30/6 K/BB, 1 HR).
  2. If you treat the payroll pre-Quintana(~175 million) as a ceiling,or at least a threshold we know is possible, and count 20 million for the arb guys(the only other one is Grimm, I assume Rondon is non-tendered), then you're at ~120 million give or take after Quintana and Gray. Baez, Schwarber, Happ, Edwards, Contreras, Montgomery, Almora are auto-renewals(assuming none go for Gray) and you're at less than 125 million for 17 guys, with relievers and bench players left to fill out the roster.
  3. I've always thought that stopping and planting on that play like Bryant did was faster than the jump throws that are common among the Machados of the world.
  4. lol who was that in the bullpen tracking Schwarber's bomb edit: Grimm, awesome
  5. Pierre's Cubs fWAR is predicated on his +14 UZR, which was a pretty extreme outlier.
  6. That's an interesting thought, if you believe in Montgomery and maybe have some pessimism on Gray's health, then you might not view them as terribly different values, and adding more depth like Almora, or Caratini, etc tips you over the edge. Whether that's feasible probably depends on how willing other teams are to give up more premier prospects for Gray. The Yankees might be more desperate after Pineda's injury, for example.
  7. If any team could make it work, it'd probably be Oakland with their penchant for guys who don't necessarily have super high ceilings, although I agree it would probably require either Almora or Happ.
  8. With Lackey technically on the DL, the active roster is at 24. yeah but isn't he slated to pitch one of the upcoming games I went back and checked that Sharma tweet and noticed Butler wasn't a part of the schedule(which included Montgomery twice), so when Lackey does need to come back on Tuesday then he's probably going back to Iowa.

  10. Theo's unabridged comments: https://theathletic.com/75441/2017/07/13/theo-epstein-speaks-about-trading-for-jose-quintana/ A few highlights: - They did a lot of investigation(both scouting and analytical) on Quintana's 2017 and feel good that it's an aberration - They're interested in adding more pieces at the deadline, although (paraphrasing) this deal sets them up to not feel forced into any moves - Hahn admitted after the deal was done that there was no way for it to get done without both Eloy and Cease
  11. Think I saw somewhere on twitter that he's in line to start Sunday. I'm rooting for this just because I'll be at next Saturday and Sunday's games and this would line him up to start one of them. Quintana confirmed for Sunday. [tweet] [/tweet]
  12. Tough break everyone, 4-5 years from now the Cubs are screwed. Plus if you think Theo is going to give up on player development and not exhaust every resource not tied to the major league club to rebuild the farm you are a moron All free agent contracts continue in perpetuity and the draft was disbanded, if you don't got the prospects now you might as well fold the franchise before The Rock's Inauguration.
  13. This is the best one IMO: Tough break everyone, 4-5 years from now the Cubs are screwed.
  14. That Brewerfan thread is delightful. They're so glad the Cubs traded prospects for a good player since that means the prospects can't be good players for the Cubs or be traded for a good player later. Some also seem to think Quintana-caliber pitchers are regularly reaching Free Agency.
  15. Still all for Gausman if you're talking about someone like Monty 2016. this is exactly who i keep coming back to in my mind since he's been brought around here quite a bit. in a hypothetical Gausman deal, does he go to the pen or the minors for the remainder of the year? I kinda want to trade for Gausman and then put him in the pen permanently.
  16. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/cubs-accurately-rate-underrated-jose-quintana/ Lester is also 6.5 years older. Compare his 2009-2011 stats with Quintana Lester was better the last 3 years than he was in 2009-2011.
  17. If you think we just traded for prime Jon Lester you are sadly mistaken http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/cubs-accurately-rate-underrated-jose-quintana/
  18. Lots and lots of wrong things here. Did you do that on purpose? What exactly is wrong with this opinion? - Since the start of 2014, Quintana is tied with Lester for the 6th most fWAR in MLB, between Arrieta/Price and Greinke/Bumgarner - The Rays are currently tied for the lead in the wild card, and while there's lots of contenders to push them down, you're taking a pretty significant risk by banking on a pitcher who might not even be available(this also applies to my deadline crush Stroman) - The Cubs notably did not give up anyone on the MLB roster or near it in this deal. If you're making trade for [Alternative you would have rather had for the cost], you're very likely getting asked about Happ/Baez/Schwarber/Russell. - Almora/Candelario/Cease would not get you a pitcher near as good as your too low impression of what Quintana is, never mind a pitcher as good as Quintana actually is. Maybe as a rental, but as has been said this is not just a trade for today, it makes the offseason much easier and more flexible.
  19. Montgomery too. Lester/Q/Hendricks/Arrieta/Montgomery is fine with me, although if they want to make another Montgomery deal I won't be opposed. With Butler, Anderson, and technically Lackey still around, I don't know how necessary it is though.
  20. Pretty sure they don't have that issue anymore Taylor's emergence and Puig and Turner pulling their weight have made a big difference, but if given the choice I'd still rather throw LHP at a lineup featuring Seager, Gonzalez, Bellinger, and Grandal.
  21. There are only so many seasons with Rizzo and Bryant both healthy and producing at a high level, plus guys like Russell, Contreras, Baez, etc. on cheap deals, I would not be okay with shying away from a significant addition just because the first half was a little disappointing. They still have 62% odds of winning the division. Also it's 3.5 years of control for Quintana, he makes future offseasons much easier to manage. FA's and teams would have a lot of leverage if the Cubs needed to add 2-3 SP in one offseason, now it's potentially only 1 if they like Montgomery(or Butler).
  22. This is also example 526 of the front office prioritizing durability when it comes to sinking significant assets in a SP. Also another example of the front office moving early before the market takes away options or changes their price dramatically.
