  1. 1-2-3 first inning for Hendricks? CGSHO confirmed
  2. Tim Anderson is awfully worked up when no one made contact with him when he avoided a DP by having Murphy get speared in the leg behind the base
  3. How was there no call for the runner going through the base cleats-first into Murphys shin
  4. [tweet] [/tweet] tldr; players can request an emergency hearing to get off administrative leave, and Russell/Boras are considering asking for one
  5. This. Ricketts, Theo, and Jed don't seem like the kind of guys who will sit on their hands and let this one play out. He needs to be gone until this is investigated and let the dust settle where it may. There’s multiple examples of this front office leaning on a lack of legal or technical proof to let things slide. Maybe things have changed, and/or maybe Russell’s performance changes their calculus, but i’m not optimistic they’re going to make a decision we find satisfying.
  6. Just because most of us that have no skin in the game are able to rationalize it doesn’t make it any less important to prevent situations that drive other fans away.
  7. I don't know that it makes you a scumbag...I don't know you or your beliefs, but I'd question why you care about sports more than the lives of those that are affected by the "opinions" of others. This is an Athletic article, so you may not be able to read it if you're not a subscriber, but Daniel Murphy's horsefeathers opinions have an affect on people...maybe not you, but others. https://theathletic.com/494008/2018/08/29/a-lesbians-guide-to-rooting-for-the-cubs-with-daniel-murphy/ So people with the ability to put themselves in the shoes of others recognize that these issues are far more important than baseball. If you’re bothered by Murphy, just don’t root for him. It would have been a great disservice if the Cubs decided not to improve their team and give them a better shot at winning a World Series because of a guy’s opinion. Some people think it’s more important that all fans are able to enjoy the sport without tremendous internal conflict than their favorite team making some marginal improvement to the playoff roster.
  8. It doesn't matter that Murphy isn't leading the "horsefeathers" competition. He's still competing in it. I am going to go ahead and commit NSBB suicide with my first post and ask why everyone cares so much about what athletes do? I mean we all watch these guys because they are really really good at baseball, not because they are heros or better people, right? Specifically with Murphy, I don't like him or anything he's said regarding homosexuality, but I'd rather he's hitting for us in the playoffs than the opposing team. Does that somehow make me a scumbag too? Even if we set aside the morality of that mindset, this is a luxury afforded to people who haven’t faced the discrimination that some groups of people have faced. It matters that Murphy has said insensitive things about the gay community and been less than apologetic about them, because there are gay Cubs fans who have faced far worse and now have that crappy experience personified on their favorite baseball team. It matters that Chapman and Russell have hurt women because many women have faced that experience and many people know women who have faced that, and now there’s an avatar of that pain that their fellow cubs fans are cheering on.
  9. The counterpoint is that Hader saw zero consequences for his past actions coming to light, and Russell’s behavior has more in common with that in terms of deniability than Heimlich legally admitting to committing his crime. to be clear, I’m speaking to what i think is the likely outcome, personally I don’t care to ever see Russell again. Like you and WF22 have said, this isn’t an area where the FO has covered themselves in glory to date.
  10. The counterpoint is that Hader saw zero consequences for his past actions coming to light, and Russell’s behavior has more in common with that in terms of deniability than Heimlich legally admitting to committing his crime.
  11. I honestly would be surprised if they did. The post doesn’t get any more specific than “put his hands on me” with physical abuse, and it’s a lot easier to talk yourself out of punishing Russell for being a manipulative and unfaithful husband. Best case scenario is they re-open the investigation and she cooperates this time, Russell barely plays the rest of the season because he’s been terrible and they have Murphy, and then after the playoffs Russell is jettisoned one way or another with this stated as a primary reason.
  12. ┻┳| ┳┻| ┻┳| ┳┻| ┻┳| ┳┻| _ ┻┳| •.•) Montgomery is better than Hamels ┳┻|⊂ノ ┻┳|
  13. xFIP is also thinking 'surely Hamels won't give up THIS many home runs' when that's probably closer to his talent level than fluke chance
  14. I could see them thinking about Hyde as a protege of sorts, with as much as he's bounced back and forth between the front office and the dugout. I can also see the logic in thinking that every 5 years or so you need to get some fresh managerial perspective because you end up too calcified in your beliefs(good or bad) about the players you've been working with for years. That's especially true of the Cubs who have had a really consistent set of position players. Ultimately though there's no way they're going to get rid of Joe for performance reasons when he's winning so much(if they lose out the regular season, Maddon's still is averaging 95 wins/year), doubly so when there's such a built in excuse for this year's disappointment. There's gonna be a lot of suboptimal decisions when your closer needs to be handled with kid gloves and Edwards isn't exactly a workhorse either(plus Strop got hurt). Theo's quotes reminding people the bullpen has the best ERA in the game imply he thinks similarly. Maybe they try to get some more back-end firepower outside of bargain shopping to remove all doubt for next year?
  15. how much does Yelich get docked for not knowing how to use a hammer
  16. baseball without runs isn't funs I agree! And yet they're 5th in the NL in runs, only 21 back of the leader. They're 2nd in both wOBA and wRC+. It's like they're designed for maximum irritation while still winning enough to be successful.
  17. If the Cubs play .500 ball for the rest of the year they'll have 93 or 94 wins(depending on if you count .500 as 7-6 or 6-7). Playing their current winning percentage would similarly be 94-95 wins. If you asked all of us before the year how you'd feel about 93-95 wins, I think most all of us would have said 'fine' at the worst, and yet the current sentiment is 'please kill me' for basically any Cubs-related thought. Remarkable. This is not an indictment or accusation by the way, I've watched maybe a half dozen games since the all-star break. I still keep up with scores with interest, and the doom-mongering doesn't *help*, but it's just not been enjoyable to follow. I guess it's a testament to how resilient the roster is that it can handle this many low end outcomes and still be good, while the Washingtons of the world have already gotten to switch off and resign themselves to no playoffs.
  18. That tweet is trash and deserving of unending scorn
  19. Joe killed Morrow is a low-key incredible take
  20. Have we really seen much of a bounce back from Schwarber? His OPS is 42 points higher, all due to higher BA and OBP, but his BABIP is exactly 42 points higher this year. His offensive value is pretty similar to last year and his change in WAR (from 0 to 1.6) seems to be heavily influenced by improvements in defensive value. To me there might be improvement but its slight compared to the 2nd half of last year. *waits for TT to bring out the fancy stats to make me look like a fool* His OBP is 40 points higher, his wRC+ went from 102 to 114, and he's been worth 3.0 fWAR. The defensive value is part of that and likely not 100% sustainable, but we're much more confident of what he is and will be than at this point last year. He's not taken a Baez-esque leap to be worth as much with the bat as, say, Rizzo, and he does get shielded from LHP a bit(some of that is being defensively replaced), but RH corner OF platoon help is never an actual problem if that's the worst case scenario.
  21. Given Baez's breakout and Schwarber's bounce back, the only real point of concern is Contreras, and I'm 95% sure he's just hitting a wall from overuse and the accumulated playoff games. That's pretty easily fixable with a stronger backup or more commitment to Caratini from Joe. Outside of that, Almora, Happ, and Russell could all disappear tomorrow, and you're one signing away from a defensive alignment of Schwarber/Heyward/Harper in the OF and Bryant/Baez/Zobrist/Rizzo in the IF with Bote still around. There's too many numbers to worry about there actually being persistent black holes in the coming years.
  22. I can't figure out why they went with that formation again for Mexico. That player pool(and really the player pool at large) seems really set up well to do a 4-3-3 that retreats to a 4-2-3-1 against good teams. You've got a bunch of young defensive mids with some attacking prowess(McKennie, Adams, Acosta, Roldan, kinda Trapp, Delgado if you're gonna waste time calling him in, Canouse I think), and guys like Weah, Pulisic, even Zardes/Wood to an extent would seem to have better roles in that setup than the 4-1-4-1 they rolled out there. Yedlin and Robinson can add width if you're worried about too many central players too.
  23. Matt Miazga is my new favorite player
  24. I know right? I'm assuming you're talking about the random "choke you out" part lol? Also, choking people out isn't especially satisfying, for what its worth. http://78.media.tumblr.com/5c812d8e8210534178594248b09ed0ef/tumblr_mgw7z2osc51rlcu0uo1_400.gif
