  1. He has caught 86 of 100 innings so far and has a history of wearing down at the plate when he gets overused. Long season, gotta take care of the catchers.
  2. You can still pinch hit for a pitcher folks. I would be shocked if whatever criteria for 'SP getting shelled' had significantly different numbers in terms of comebacks between AL and NL anyway. Yes you will have to be mindful of who is in the DH spot, that is a feature in valuing defensive capability and not a bug. It also promotes SP durability and kills off things like the opener that devalue SP and would otherwise turn pitchers into NFL running backs, which indirectly promotes more balls in play/fewer Ks as well.
  3. This feels like a complete game shut out for Burnes or the Cubs win 11-1, no in between
  4. I kinda like that theory, though I'd apply the same critical eye to the FO and the coaching, too. I think everyone got really fat and happy and complacent after the WS win. We joked about the hangover talk, but that horsefeathers clearly lasted way too long in a lot of different ways. I would say it's far more the front office/player acquisition part than the individual players. They saw their process rewarded, and as a result were very late to a lot of player development evolutions that have happened in the last 5 years. That bled through with not being willing to make opinionated changes to the roster until the time had passed(Schwarber) or it was forced on them(Russell, soon to be Baez/Rizzo/Bryant). If there is a player-centric cause, part of me wonders if all the games aged the group faster than they might have otherwise. In the span of 3 years('15-'17) Bryant played 493 games, Rizzo played 508. Baez had 474 from '16-'18 and Contreras' 371 from '17-'19 is too many for a catcher.
  5. Why would you wait and look around the catcher just to say that it was a foul tip
  6. In both cases, rainout buffer since the Thursday game was a home opener.
  7. I mean on one hand, Bauer is def cheating and should be punished. On the other, he pretty much called this out back in 2018 and mlb did nothing and then said "ok I'm going you do it too and I'm going to win the cy young" and he did. So like... He's doing exactly what he set out to do which was even out the playing field and take away advantages from others who are also cheating? On a third hand, MLB hammering Bauer while ignoring every other pitcher is by far the funniest outcome and the one we should actively root for.
  8. would've been nice to get back the strike that was a foot outside
  9. Someone really needs to come out with an all-sports streaming service option. Feels like all the options out there are all a mis-mash of options. The truth is, regional sports networks are expensive to carry and I feel like sports fans are less likely to cut the cord than non-sports fans. If these streaming services want to keep their costs below cable, they have to make sacrifices. Things like YTTV or Fubo are basically as close as we can get without breaking up media conglomerates. Those companies that own both sports rights and random cooking channels can force providers like Google or Fubo to take on the smaller ones to wring a little more cash out of the deal, and sports is always the bulk of the cost so consumers are gonna stomach that to make the option more family friendly or to meet more needs than just sports. Plus with different conglomerates acting as providers(the Disney+/ESPN+/Hulu triumvirate, Paramount+, Peacock premium) they're further motivated to be very careful about what providers have access to the most valuable content they have.
  10. Is Peralta hanging every slider he throws on purpose, has he ever thrown one before
  11. This doesn't seem to make sense with DJ, Gleyber, Urshela and others on the roster. But the Rangers are eating almost all of his remaining salary. Neither Urshela, Andujar, or especially Gleyber are acceptable major leaguers in the middle infield, and the only other name I see on that depth chart is a quad-A guy(Tyler Wade), so adding a second baseman who isn't a danger to himself with the glove feels like a move worth making.
  12. That Mister F ref is one of the best game thread bits I've ever seen
  13. You would think that could be a clause in the contract though - ie void if convicted of a crime. Right, it's a PR risk not a legal/contractual one
  14. Isn't Self still in the crosshairs of the Adidas investigation to some degree? With less than a year on his existing deal you have to do something, but it feels a little risky that you might have to dump the guy you just signed to a lifetime contract, even if that risk is relatively small. Doesn't feel like he was gonna sour on the idea of a lifetime deal in that timeframe so you probably wouldn't have lost anything by waiting.
  15. If you assume that you're probably taking 4 or 5 wingers to a world cup, then you've got Pulisic, Reyna, Weah, and Aaronson all pretty easily in form and over Morris, and then you layer on the injury and any other contenders(Arriola? Mueller? Boyd? even Dest, etc) and it looks like a pretty uphill climb. The things working in Morris' favor would be that a lot can happen between now and next fall, players can get hurt(looking at you Weah, but really anyone can get hurt), roles could change(maybe in a post-Haaland world Reyna becomes more of a false 9 and seizes that role that no one else has), today's settled positions are tomorrow's question marks. Plus, Morris has experience with the team and has shown he can be productive at that level, and his skillset is a little unique and fits well with a roster you would build for tournament play. So at this point I wouldn't bank on it, but there's still a decent path for Jordan if he comes back strong.
  16. Outside of more general quibbles that boil down to personal preference, the only thing that seems really out of place is Horvath both being in the list and being so high. Feels like he doesn't have a leg up on the slew of other options(Turner, Johnson, Guzan, Hamid) even if he does have a legitimate shot. The only name not mentioned that feels like it deserves mention is Sam Vines. He's had a few full team appearances, and Robinson is the only other true LB on the list. Maybe some other names you can say are in the conversation, like Acosta, Yedlin, Mueller, Cardoso, but they're in competition for the bottom of the rroster.
  17. I don't think it's impossible, but it could be saying that only 3.1% of appearances were non-compliant with the current rule, which allows single hitter appearances that end an inning, which feels more accurate to me. Wouldn't it be even more unlikely if it was non-compliant appearances? That would be more appearances than just single batter appearances, no? True, I didn't phrase that eloquently. In my head I was thinking 'non-compliant single batter appearances' and not lumping in 2 batter appearances.
  18. I don't think it's impossible, but it could be saying that only 3.1% of appearances were non-compliant with the current rule, which allows single hitter appearances that end an inning, which feels more accurate to me.
  19. if I were the Cubs I would simply not give up 3 baserunners per inning to the worst team in the league
  20. trying to imagine what the thought process is there, was he just super confident the ball was gonna drop?
  21. if you asked me if Brandon Workman was on the Cubs roster before today I'm pretty sure I would've said no
  22. yes it's Chad Kuhl making his first start in the cold, but 32 pitches to get out of the first is some 2016-caliber grinding
  23. I'm curious how much the order evolves over the course of the season, but yeah that's our best 8 and outside of some matchup related-tweaks I'd anticipate it being the best 8 in October. And like you say, I'll definitely take my chances with that group.
