  1. Matt Lawton is roughly infinity times better than Juan Pierre. Pierre has been TERRIBLE this season, and he wasn't very good to begin with. To put it in perspective, people have been harsh on Patterson this year, and he and Pierre have identical OPS's(.650 to .649). Patterson created more runs last year despite a 50 point gap in their OBP's. Patterson is the superior fielder. There's really no reason to take Pierre over Patterson(nevermind Lawton), yet in most baseball circles, Pierre is a small ball hero, and Patterson is on the fringe of obscurity.
  2. Thanks for reminding me that I forgot to put him in my fantasy lineup. :X
  3. 34? He turns 34 in November.
  4. *Shakes head* Edmonds needs to show him some fashion sense. :)
  5. Did he still have the 2 toned high socks?
  6. He was awful, and I am happy to see his renaissance rather than envious. Exactly. I always liked JoBo, but he had no stuff left, we had no choice but to let him go. Hopefully he can keep AL hitters off balance for as long as he did NL hitters.
  7. Cedeno's a tough one for me. He's got great numbers at Iowa this year, but prior to 2003, he was awful at the plate. It's a very thin class of FA SS this year, and Cedeno is cheap and young. He wouldn't have to produce a whole lot to give us good production at the position, but we may have the opportunity to get Nomar on the cheap. When it comes down to it, I think it's dependent on what else you do this year. If you go out and sign Giles and trade for Dunn, then I'm willing to let Ronny develop in the 7 or 8 hole and play good defense. However, if we go in with Murton at an OF spot, an unsure CF with Patterson/Pie, and no sizeable improvements at the corner OF spots, I'm a little less willing to let Cedeno man SS.
  8. Replace him with who, though? His value to other teams may never be higher, but the value of a 1B who can hit like he can to the Cubs is very high . . . Not necessarily advocating trading Lee, but if you could capitalize on his inflated value to get yourself an impact OF(Dunn for example, although that would require a 3-way deal), then it might be worth it to downgrade to a Free Agent 1B like Konerko or Mientkiewicz. Or, in trading Lee you could acquire a piece that could play 1B for you(For example, an expanded deal with Cincy that nets Dunn and Casey). About the topic of the thread, I don't think it's the right idea to build towards 2007. Every move we make this offseason should be for the short and long term. That means not selling off Maddux for prospects unless we have 5 better starters, or we're about to sign a better FA pitcher for his money. That means not signing Giles to a contract heavy in years. You can build for 2006 and 2007 at the same time.
  9. I'm confused. Prior is so good you can't trade him but other GM's would laugh at you for wanting quality in return? In order to improve your team by trading Prior, you need to get X amount in return. GM's would laugh you off the phone for trying to get X from them for Prior.
  10. I reckon that it would be nearly impossible to improve the team by trading Prior. There's just not a deal out there that would get you what you want in return that a GM wouldn't laugh you off the phone.
  11. ESPNews says we are sending cash as well. Astacio looks like a nothing minor leaguer. 21 and hasn't pitched above rookie ball, with unimpressive numbers where he has pitched.

  14. Soto is the AAA catcher. He's quite young(22) and has a great walk rate at Iowa. His power has been nonexistent to this point however. Another year in AAA, and I'd like to see him replace Blanco as the backup C. Fontenot is not strictly a 2B. He's logged a bit of time at 3B, and I even saw him at SS in the Iowa box score recently. Huh? I went to alot of ICub games last year when Dubois was there, but I didn't recognize those guys. I realize they may not have been there. I didn't realize how much I enjoyed and was spoiled by the ICubs until I left Iowa. It was kind of nice to drive down from Ames on a regular basis and catch a game for less then $10. Although, I can go check out the Springfield Cardinals anytime now! LOL! Soto and Lewis were in AA last season, and Fontenot was in the Orioles organization. That's why you didn't see them at Iowa last year.

  16. Again, Power does not equal home runs. It's getting yourself around the bases without the help of your teammates, doubles, triples, and home runs. You want power in every spot. It's not the end of the world if you have a guy with below average power in a spot(which Murton may or may not be), but you really shouldn't try and build a team around the fact that you are bullishly trying to put that player in the lineup.
  17. They got a pretty good return for Jimmy Anderson from the Red Sox....
  18. Corey had a slump at AAA that culminated with him sitting out a couple games because of a respiratory problem, which likely had something to do with the slump. As soon as he came back, he started hitting. I think it's a coincidence. Patterson before Hairston's injury: 7/28: Still recovering from respiratory problem 7/29: 2 for 4, 2B 7/30: 2 for 4, 2B 7/31: 1 for 5 8/2: 1 for 3, 2 BB Total: .375/.444/.500 Patterson after Hairston's injury: 8/4: 2 for 4 8/5: 2 for 4, BB 8/6: 3 for 4 8/7: 1 for 3, HBP Total: .533/.588/.533 He's been better since Hairston's injury, but on the whole he's just been raking since he returned to the lineup. Throw in tonight's performance, and he's hitting .500/.553/.735 since those off days.
  19. Then your problem is with the seeding of the playoffs, not necessarily the WC itself. explain how to seed the teams with a wild card so that won't happen. this wouldn't happen if there were four divisions or no divisions or two divisions or whatever. If you seed the teams based on win-loss record without regard to division, then it won't happen. that would help in scenarios in which the a's and angels both have better records than the red sox, but . . . White Sox have best record. Red Sox have second best record. Lesser record of A's/Angels gets the White Sox. Then that's no longer a problem of the wild card, it's a problem that the team with the best record isn't the most feared. There's no way to prevent that, unless you did something ridiculous like seeding based on record in September.

  21. Wade Boggs was also able to hit nearly .330 with a .090 IsoD and very few K's.
  22. What list is that...the DL? :D Is Williamson signed for next year? Yes, he got the same deal as Dempster did and the Cubs hold an option on him for next year, I can't remember the amount but I think it was $500,000. this year with a option for 2 million next year? or maybe 1 million, not sure. 2 million is correct, same as Dempster.
  23. My crackpot theory: Move a team into the AL, 6-5 team divisions(KC to the AL West, Milwaukee back to the AL Central?). Same playoff format. Here's the big one: abolish the DH, and play an unbalanced schedule against EVERYBODY. For example the Cubs would play every AL team 3 times, every NL East and West team 6 times, and every NL Central team 14 times.
