  1. Don't take this the wrong way, but you're on crack. Torii Hunter is a Gold Glove outfielder and a better hitter than anyone who appeared in the Cubs' outfield this year. And a better option than 36-year-old Brian Giles who everybody on this board has some sort of weird man-crush on. Comparing Torii Hunter to Juan Pierre is beyond ridiculous. Have you even seen the guy play or are you just looking at numbers and nothing else? Giles is so much better than Hunter it isn't funny. His OBP is what, 100 points better?
  2. Torii Hunter(if he had a few more PA's to be eligible) would be 8th among eligible CF's in OPS. That's pretty good, and unfortunately there's not a lot better out there. On the other hand, it's still only a .788 OPS, and we'd be paying over 10 million dollars for it. Additionally, there's no way you aren't going to overpay for Hunter given his ill-deserved reputation as a star in this league. I say pass on Torii. You're better off seeing if you could buy low on Lew Ford, or possibly hoping Hunter gets traded elsewhere to see if Damon's market comes back from the stratosphere.
  3. fleeting moments. fleeting moments.... Given how dominant he was the last 5 starts last year makes me think it was more than just a fleeting moment. I suppose we have no choice but to hope that's the case. His last 5 starts of '04 and prior to the line drive in '05 is just under 100 consecutive innings.
  4. I bet you're all regretting not voting Nolasco Minor League POY now.
  5. It doesn't matter, you'll lose no matter what.
  6.      Why, you mean to tell me Prior is a dominating pitcher? Heck no he's not so roll your eyes some place else. "not dominating" and "bad" are not exactly right next to each other on the scale. I sure hope that will be brought up when he comes up for his contract. Cause he is just above average. Luckily it will be several years before that happens.

  8. This is a good point. And, having played baseball and still playing soccer as a keeper, I can relate to what you're saying about defense (as you can as well). You know what you're capable of, physically and positionally. But, sometimes you're off your game, or you're just completely stopping everything. A little bit of luck and a little bit of confidence can make a difference. In soccer, the rest of your defense plays a pretty big role -- but so does the pitcher in baseball. If everything is placed correctly, you look great. Likewise, in soccer, if your defense is positioned correctly and covering the various angles, you look brilliant. (Or if your defense deigns to *listen* when you are calling out a far post run, or trying to place the wall... Have I recently mentioned that my team doesn't listen well?) I'm convinced people in a wall take the job too seriously. That is they take on the mental capabilities of one when they are in one.
  9. Now I get it. Dusty waited until we were mathematically eliminated from the division race to start making coherent lineups.
  10. they better not, i don't care what he has to say....unless he's resigning of course I don't think they will considering they are a cable network that's not really a news network aside from local news.
  11. Huh. Real tough call for me. Living in Cardinal territory it would be terrible having to put up with that, but they have put together a great team and definitely deserve it more than the WS. On the other hand, it would be great to not have to deal with as much grief from Cardinal fans, but sickening to hear about how grinderball won the White Sox a world series. I'll just say that I don't think it'll matter because the White Sox are about the 5th-6th best team in the AL right now, and there's no way they're making it to the WS.
  12. Again though, since they are such different sports, it's hard to compare. All Federer can do is go out there and win tournament after tournament.
  13. CS% and SB against aren't solely the catcher's responsibility. Different pitchers throwing different pitches against different baserunners.
  14. He does remind me of Quervo(sp)...Z's buddy that the Cubs traded. You mean Ruben Quevedo? But there are plenty of good and fat pitchers. Ray King. Bartolo Colon. CC Sabathia. David Wells (well, at least he used to be good). Even Zambrano wouldn't exactly be considered svelte. While those guys have all had success, they've all had periods where they've struggled mightily, and in most cases it's due to their weight. That said, I wouldn't put Williams in a class with those guys, but I'd worry more about him in that aspect than say, Zambrano.
  15. To reiterate what I said earlier, Barrett is having a down defensive season much like Lee is having an up offensive season, although to different degrees. Barrett has been pretty mediocre this year defensively, but his previous seasons suggest he'll go back to being average/slightly below average. In regards to his offense, I think this year has cemented that his offensive outburst is for real. So going forward, Barrett is likely to maintain a high offensive output for his position, and likely to improve to previous norms(that are average for his position) defensively. That's what the argument isn't taking into consideration. Barrett has been pretty bad defensively, but it isn't likely to continue. Many people, myself definitely included, get it in their minds that a person's defensive skill is what it is, that it never wavers. Truth is like any other part of performance that sometimes a player has streaks where they play above or below their ability/previous performance.
  16. I have never seen a player get under your skin like Neifi does. I like your choices...how did Mabry do this year? Mabry was okay, .300/.430 OBP/SLG, but his career marks are better. I almost hesitated to put him on the list. And yes, I think I'm going to have to go on a "Say No to Neifi" campaign this offseason. If it's between Perez and Baker....I'll take Perez in a heartbeat. Do any of these players play 3rd/1st and hit left handed? Mabry is LH and plays some first and less third. Sweeney is 1B/OF but RH Fontenot can play 3B and is a switch hitter I believe Saenz plays both corners and is RH Woodward plays some 1B and is RH
  17. Yes, Piniella was traded to Tampa, sort of: By Jim Callis October 28, 2002 In a move initially reported during the World Series but not officially confirmed until Monday, the Mariners released manager Lou Piniella from his contract so he could return home to Tampa and skipper the Devil Rays. As expected, Seattle received all-star outfielder Randy Winn as compensation—but Tampa Bay also received a player, infield prospect Antonio Perez.

  19. Branyan, Mark Sweeney, Fontenot, Olmedo Saenz, Chris Woodward, John Mabry all could possibly be useful bench players. NO NEIFI UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
  20. How about some props for Jerome Williams? Though one might not think it, Jerome has been pretty solid since coming to the Cubs, and has really put together a fine month thus far. 14 starts, 8 quality starts, 2 disaster starts In the 4 other starts, he has a 4.12 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP For his Cub season: 86 IP, 1.33 WHIP, 3.87 ERA I'll take that from my 23 year old 5 starter. Williams could stand to improve his K/BB from both ends, but the key to his success in his last several outings has been getting more ground balls than he had previously, which helps minimize the impact of his low K rate. So good job Jerome, keep it up.
  21. While that may be true, is it Federer's fault? There's not much more he can do, since he wins just about every tournament he plays.
  22. In Ohio no less. Yes, I hate OSU with a passion, and even though Texas is rivals with Mizzou, I was pulling for them all the way last saturday. Plus I want them to be ranked #2 or #1 when they come to Columbia.
  23. I was at the rec center and laughed watching that collapse. Hermanson was terrible. Fall behind, then throw a meatball.
  24. Point being, who was available? He made a double switch, which was basically pinch hitting. I don't care if Macias pinch hits, I'm resigned to the fact that he will get a PH opportunity nearly every game despite his ineptitude in that situation. However, keeping Macias in the game is completely unnecessary. It's not worth the drop off just to move the pitcher's spot an extra 2 spots away, especially when Walker is having a great night at the plate.
