  1. Let him be a backup OF. He's security if Pierre gets hurt, then if he gets hot you can spin him at the deadline. Like USS brought up, we hardly got anything for him, so it's not a huge deal if that deal isn't there next offseason, and there's a decent likelihood it will be.
  2. It is possible that Hendry would have gotten zero in return for Patterson. Corey has shown absolutely nothing as major leaguer and it is doubtful that he ever would as a Cub. It is difficult to see why you would get so excited over losing a guy with worse career numbers than Neifi Perez. The guy was awful in 2005, awful. In '03 and '04 he was an average to good offensive CF while providing great defense. He has done something as a major leaguer. There shouldn't be a great urgency to trade Patterson. His value can't get lower, and there's not a huge roster crunch to get him off the roster, so why not wait until his value inevitably rises?
  3. Obscure, and maybe a little incorrect, but I remember there was like a 2-3 week span where teams(Pirates and Astros especially) kept bringing in LOOGY's to face Patterson, despite his splits for the year('04). Seemed like he hit every one of them down the line for a double. That catch in Cincy this year was pretty amazing as well.
  4. Why not? They've wasted far more on other guys who are mostly just gloves, and their entire offseason focus was on guys who can catch the ball. Like who? Entire focus?? Jones, Neifi, Pierre(although he really isn't a great defender), the persistent rumors of Walker being gone, Furcal as a FA target, etc. Just about every offensive move made this offseason save Mabry could be related back to increased emphasis on defense.
  5. I've heard this several times about Walker, and the relationship is flimsy at best IMO. Grudz is on his 4th team in 5 years, and he had some collusion complaints when he left Chicago(worse than Walker's comments IMO), and no one refers to him as a malcontent who nobody wants despite him ending up in KC. Why is that?
  6. Why wouldn't he be at SS in AA? Theriot looks Iowa bound, and there wasn't anyone really set at SS for Daytona last year, unless I'm overlooking someone.
  7. It was actually started prior to the announcement of the trade.
  8. I usually pay no attention to college hoops until about the middle of February, but I took a glance this weekend. I will not take a stand and say they will win the conference, but I think Wisconsin stands more of a chance than everyone predicted. they only play Illinois and Indiana once, both at home. that alone should save them a couple of conference losses. They are young, but don't underestimate Bo. really amazing what he has done considering he gets no out of state talent to come to UW. They also have an easier conference schedule relative to other contenders. They don't have to go to either Assembly Hall, and their trips to MSU and Iowa aren't until the very end of the conference schedule. Big Ten Wonk brought it up today as well. With only UW and IU of the contenders not having a loss, Wisconsin has a nice upper hand to win the conference title. EDIT: This wasn't meant to demean Wisconsin in any way, they're a very good club.
  9. So if Arod broke his hand in a meaningless spring game that would be alright? Are spring training games a joke then too? The WBC is nothing more then exhibition games against different opponents and has the added bonus of being patriotic for players involved. Not a good comparison. ST games are part of getting ready for the season, you play with your (future) teammates and the organization supervises all of that. The WBC doesn't really do any of those.
  10. Spears looks like an interesting prospect. Perez doesn't look like much, but I don't know what his stuff is like.
  11. .389/.486/.738/1.224 in 175 High-A PA's He then got promoted to AA where he had much less success (.687 OPS) in 113 PA's. He was 22 last year.
  12. Considering we already have a player who outproduced Soriano at his position last year, positional scarcity isn't a huge motivating factor in this deal. Forgetting Patterson for a moment, let's look at Soriano v. Williams. Williams was 47th in baseball in ERA as a Cub, 57th in WHIP, and 37th in K/BB. Soriano was 57th in OPS, 131st in OBP, and 52nd in RC27. Add in the fact that Williams is 5 years younger and much further from free agency, and there's not a whole lot of reason to trade Williams for Soriano. UNLESS, you can get better value for Soriano by retrading him, in which case you'd probaby be better off working a 3 way deal.
  13. Tucker's a worthy choice no doubt. Despite my dunktastic sig, as of the moment I'd waver a bit on putting Ager in there. He's just flat out disappeared in two consecutive games. Brown has been the more consistent player, and while Ager was lighting it up earlier in the season, Brown was still getting his points, is a bit better defensively, and now has better shooting percentages across the board. Davis really hasn't impressed either, especially after his 2 point performance on Sun. (although he did have 9 rebounds I think.) but Shannon Brown was unstoppable. Davis wasn't that great Sunday, but I thought at least part of his trouble was getting in early foul trouble(which IMO were on a pair of ticky tack fouls, but that's life on the road, can't really blame Paul for it), and then Izzo never letting him get near the basket. Also, in the second half Davis would always be the pick man on the high pick and roll, the set would never let him get inside. Considering that, that he still had a decent game against Illinois, and that he's continued to be the best rebounder in the Big 10, I'll keep him on there.

  15. It matters a hell of a lot more than what they do off the field. Exactly. Freel got a DUI(or similar), he's not being accused of rape or murder. For all we know half the Cubs now do this and just don't get caught.
  16. Prediction or thus far? My prediction was that team sans Tucker, I didn't know who to put in the last spot.
  17. There hasn't been one since Doug Glanville. Eric Hinske, to a degree. Have to throw Sisco's name out there too in that case. Sisco is not a position player, and the jury is still out now that the Royals can send him to the minor leagues. I left the room and came back and reread the position player thing, you're too quick Bruce. :D

  19. Come root for Mizzou, make your season even longer. Pfft, we Mizzou basketball fans have it best. Win, great, yay Mizzou. Lose, Quin comes closer to getting fired. Can't lose. Haha good point. However, when a loss is to SAM HOUSTON STATE, you can't help but want to hurt small animals (or something similar). True, but they looked great at both ends of the ball yesterday, did you see the game? If Jimmy McKinney decides that he's a baskeball player every game like he did against OSU, who knows what could happen with this conference.

  21. Duke's 2 big men, Williams and McRoberts, both have 2 fouls at Wake Forest. There's over 16 minutes left in the first half.
  22. Road games are killing everybody.
  23. Good thing they're starting with a 10 point lead then... Indy...
  24. I don't see them getting past today. Well that would be consistent in all the teams that I like losing their first game.
  25. Since Tampa and Jacksonville got eliminated, I'm hoping Cincinnati takes it all.
