  1. Jones' numbers include his prime years, which he is past. Patterson's numbers don't include his prime years, which he is nearing. I wouldn't be surprised if your bet works out.
  2. Okay, I wiped the sessions table (sorry if I caught anyone in the middle of posting). Please post here if the problem recurs so that I can take further measures. Thx
  3. Yeah, I'm going to try wiping the sessions table tonight when traffic dies down to see if it helps.
  4. So you're saying we should have given Corey another chance, then.
  5. I don't think scouts are expected to always be right. in fact, they are mostly wrong. But to go 0 for everybody in regards to position players? Since I have been watching the Cubs, about thirty years ago, I can think of only one top-notch position player drafted by the Cubs: Bill Madlock. Who was let go over money, of course. If I've left anyone out, please list. I know scouts aren't "expected to always be right", but for the love of God, the Cubs track record is abysmal. And just because scouts "are mostly wrong" excuses the Cubs ability to target everyday successful big leaguers? I'd like to see just ONE guy in my lifetime. I guess I'll just wait to see the next "golden boy", Felix Pie. Given the Cubs success, I have my doubts. Rafael Palmeiro Mark Grace
  6. I was primarily responding to your statement that Pie would have had much better instruction on his way to the bigs. I do know your respect for Zisk & Joshua, so I was curious to hear what you'd have to say to explain that.
  7. That's a good question, I'd feel more confident in ATL making that decision. Pie would've had better instructors during his ascent to the majors as well as having more confidence in their decision makers as far as him being ready compared to the Cubs making that same decision. Once he got to the majors, you have Bobby Cox compared to Baker, Cox dwarfs Baker as a manager and ATL has better instructors at the Major League level as well. Comparing the track record of the Cubs and Braves as far as position players, is a model of success vs. a model of futility as far as drafting and developing quality position players. Is it that you don't think much of Zisk + Joshua or do you just think that much of the Braves instructors?
  8. Don't forget that he came up through the Cubs' system.
  9. I don't think Tim was comparing the two players abilities, but rather how far of a regression each made. Burrell was horrible that year. But, he came back from it. And he did it with the same club. Whether Patterson could do the same is still in question. Point well taken, though I do think we have to consider the strong possibility that CPatt and Burrell are two different people, and thus CPatt may have been less able than Burrell to deal with the booing and pressure. Let me restate my point as I think it has been lost: I'm not saying that because Burrell recovered, Corey would too. I'm saying to those that claim there was no chance of Corey recovering here that others have done so in similar situations. It is not a sure thing either way, which is all I was trying to say.
  10. Too bad I think there's about a snowball's chance in Pasadena of him repeating them.
  11. The most similar situation I can think of to Corey's in recent times is Pat Burrell in 2003. He was a former blue-chip prospect who had had some success in the bigs, but had a simply dreadful year, looked awful doing it and the fans booed him mercilessly (it is Philly, afterall). At that time, Philly could have dumped him for next to nothing (his contract was much worse than Corey's) and used all the same excuses that the Cubs just have used. Time to move on, change of scenery, trying to compete this year, blah, blah, blah. Pat the Bat has come back pretty well and I think Philly is pretty happy they showed the patience in him at this point. I just don't understand why people insist that it is absolutely impossible that Corey could ever come back and do well in Chicago. It is impossible to know.
  12. That would be tough to do with Cantu manning 2B.
  13. Any draft with Prior is going to be a good one. That draft would have been really good if we had signed Khalil, though.
  14. They have new ownership and a new GM. I don't think the book is out on them yet.
  15. Mmm. Draft picks galore. :D How's that '02 draft looking? :) David Weathers? Brownlie, Hagerty, Clanton, Sisco, Dopirak.... Sisco was the second rounder after prior. After Dope came Justin Jones, Petrick, Craig and Rich Hill. Wow, just wow.
  16. Mmm. Draft picks galore. :D How's that '02 draft looking? :) David Weathers? Maybe the new guy will get it right. ;) Or maybe we will have someone actually stay healthy this time. :( I have to say, for a while I was thinking that might be one of the best individual team drafts ever. Wow did the air come out of that baloon quickly. At least Jones helped us get Nomar.
  17. that makes no sense. It does if the Cubs really do want Neifi to be a backup instead of a starter. If you make the assumption that Walker is gone, then Lugo improves this team a lot over Neifi.
  18. Len, If you ever have occasion to talk with Corey again, can you pass along our best wishes and thanks for his efforts as a Cub? Thanks!
  19. I think every positional player period from '03 is gone. Aramis came mid-2003 from Pitt. Naturally, I was continuing JC's opening day point. Hmm. I guess I don't understand the difference between your post and his, then. Oh well, doesn't really matter!
  20. In the Trib/AP article, Hendry indicates that the lack of playing time that Corey would get as a bench player here would hamper his re-development. Yeah, but I'd make him a semi-platoon player. Rotate him through the three OF spots to get him a sufficient number of starts against pitchers where he has good matchups and have him work the cages like crazy on the other days. Heck, wait until the end of ST when everyone has rosters set and see if you can pass him through waivers down to Iowa. As has been pointed out ad infinitum, there isn't a whole lot of demand for him out there at $3M.

  22. Gone. Someone already mentioned that Aramis is the one with the most tenure of all position players now.
  23. Good for him. I'd be glad he's doing well. That's not what I meant and you know it! If you are now saying that he has no chance of regaining his skills, what will you say if he has a decent season? What are we qualifying as a decent season? League average for a CF? Under those circumstances, I'd say that he may have been emotionally drained in Chicago and a fresh start in Baltimore was good for him. I don't know enough about Perlozzo or their hitting coach to make an accurate gauge right now on him. If there's an adjustment he makes while being there, so be it, good for him. Reverse the question to you, Tim: If Corey has an equally bad season, what will you say, then? My mistake on the Von Joshua comment. I'd say that we had little to lose by keeping him and giving him occasional starts in LF versus right handers. Given the current state of the 40 man roster, I don't see anyone else on the team that is likely to provide much better value off the bench than Corey. If he still wasn't working out well at mid-season, dump him. Losing out on these prospects wouldn't have been a big deal.
