  1. Only if we can get Dock Ellis to be the pitching coach.
  2. Exactly. That was one of the absolute worst use of statistics, ever. Oh so you're saying he tends to give up more runs when the bases are loaded versus none on? Hmm. Whoda thunk it. Well you guys kind of got it, but kind of missed it. It is a question of degree. Obviously any idiot can tell your ERA will go up with the more people on base. But how far it goes up is the 2nd question de jour, behind save/blown save %. Generally your late inning relievers are coming in in a jam with runners all over the place. So the RISPs are very very importante. Farns Howry Rivera Remlinger Bases Empty 2.49 2.20 0.91 1.79 Runners On 6.56 4.86 3.98 6.07 RISP 8.43 6.53 5.22 8.45 RISP w/ 2 Outs 16.13 13.21 9.40 15.96 Bases Loaded 8.82 5.87 9.61 10.95 The reason i selected the 4 pitchers was Howry is the replacement for the Cubs, Rivera is the closer from the Yanks, and Remlinger is very comparable to Kyle albeit from the other side of the plate. For my money, I want numbers like Howry's for my relief pitchers. generally 2 or lower in BE, around 5 for RO, below 7.50 for RISP, and as close to 10 on the RISP w/ 2 Outs as possible. Is it arbitrary? Yea. But interpretation is 1/2 the battle. Hendry cant even do that.
  3. huh? 2004 when he was coming off fighting Estes for the honor of being the worst pitcher in the National League in the previous year? He was 6-2 with a 3.47 ERA, and 2 saves. That is why Hendry extended him. Nevermind that his lifetime ERA 4.88 or that his previous best was a 4.01. The point was one season does not make you a good or even decent pitcher.
  4. 1 year does not a career make. so we are just going to have to disagree. Kyle has up years and then down years. A 4.48 lifetime ERA in 441 games tells me he is not a great pitcher. Kyle is a space cadet and cant handle pressure. He wont make it a week as Yankee closer if Rivera has to go to the DL. The Bronx is a Zoo and will eat him alive. Edit: Here are some split numbers. G GS W L SV CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP BAA Bases Empty 419 0 0 0 0 0 0 292.2 290 89 81 43 136 317 2.49 1.46 .247 Runners On 361 0 0 0 0 0 0 280.0 245 223 202 38 130 268 6.49 1.34 .245 RISP 295 0 0 0 0 0 0 164.1 152 170 152 23 95 166 8.32 1.50 .250 RISP w/2 Outs 250 0 0 0 0 0 0 78.2 78 155 141 14 53 88 16.13 1.67 .250 Bases Loaded 58 0 0 0 0 0 0 16.1 20 18 16 2 4 16 8.82 1.47 .317 That is what tells me about pressure.
  5. wow? how many games did he play in Atlanta? 26. how many so far this season? 26. hmm. 1.98 vs. 5.18. looks like Leo magic to me. the Detroit thing? well there was no pressure to win there before this season. and pressure is Kyle's undoing. Remember the Glendon Rusch thing in 2004? Yea, that looked like a good idea too.
  6. even a blind squirrel can occasionally find an acorn. Kyle has all the talent in the world. Unfortunately he is saddled with a 2 cent head.
  7. for sure. Kyle is god awful as a setup or closer. He just will never be able to handle the pressure. 23 career blown saves and 21 total saves, with 99 holds. Take out the Leo Mazzone year and it gets even worse. The Boss blew one big time when he paid that joker 17m for 3 years. But he would make one hell of a linebacker.
  8. Story Rivera hurt himself tying his shoe. That is strong, strong work. Too bad they dont have any semblance of a farm system, or we could really help them out. With Sheff expected on the DL for a long time and Matsui already done for the year, it is time to select a new team to root for in the AL East. So.... LETS GO BLUE JAYS!!!!!!!!!!
  9. A tear in his beer?
  10. Nevin's Splits for 2003-2005
  11. 2000+ threads on this subject already. in before lockage.
  12. in before lockage.
  13. Edmonds Dang it. I think he is chicken, with that .182 avg against us this year. Now they only have one lefty regular in the lineup for this weekend. Miles is a switch hitter, and has hit against lefties better than righties this season. So we are screwed sending to 2 lefties to the mound this weekend. Hopefully we call a right hander up for a spot start on Sat or Sun.
  14. 3b Chavez and 2b Ellis both left today's game with KC. Both are going to have X-Rays tomorrow with hand and wrist problems. Any chance we could convince Billy B to take Neifi or Bynum off our hands for free? He would be a perfect fit.
  15. This is a +. Hairston has been awful this season. The TWack acquisition made his job obsolete. George Grande discussed last nite that the Cubs made some guarantees on playing time when they were going through negotiations. Apparently 6 teams wanted TWack and he chose the Cubs. Hairston is also a FA at years end. No way the Cubs were going to extend him. And after the way he was acting in the dugout last nite, its high time for him to go.
  16. Yes, he is. I miss Thommy boy.
  17. Nice to see someone else playing like the Bad News Bears. The Jolly Green Giant could have been playing 3b and Valentin would still have overthrown him. Freel bouncing a throw from 2b to 1b. That was funny, but nice play by Hatteberg digging out. Encarnacion falling on his butt then flinging the ball towards first was pretty funny. But the topper was the look on Encarnacion's face when TWack laid the bunt down and he went to throw it to first. Surprise! No one covering. Narron then came out to switch pitchers and yelled at Freel. That was classic.
  18. Belisle to the DL with a gimpy back. Reds sign Esteban Yan and he will be in Wrigley tomorrow. That kid Geranmo was up for the night to help out.
  19. I would like to point out something the Cincy Broadcast crew brought up tonight. Dunn has the highest lifetime Slugging % of anyone to play in Wrigley since 1960. His slugging % in the Friendly Confines is around .720 after tonights game, and all of the other guys on the list were in the mid 6s. Oh yeah, Cincy has one hell of an all around broadcast team. Marty Brenneman is top notch on the regular radio casts and local TV. George Grande and company are awesome on FoxOhio. Very impressive job tonight by them. Called it fairly and even found some humor in some of Narron's expressions. George Grande was the 4th ESPN original musketeer that left the network when he returned to the Midwest.
  20. Casey Whatever they want- Time to pull Mr Wilson up from our AAAA affiliate. .288/.369/.908 this year, .270/.364/.856 career would look mighty nice at 1b and platooning in RF.
  21. Tribune Interesting read this is- seems a lot to give up just for stock price. $2B rebuy of stock on all debt load. $500 Million of assets sold to back up loans. A couple of key points. First, the debt ratio will go from about 54% of assets to about 62-67% depending on which assets they do sell. Second, What $500 million in assets are they planning to sell? Third, This is going to cost them a lower bond rating- moving them into BBB- territory. That is only a couple of notches away from the dreaded B rating that can have very negative consequences. Lasty, Why is the ROA and ROE so low, and the dividend rate so high? The Tribune does not figure well in their industry on these categories. I hope this isnt the beginning of the end and that FitzSimons knows what he is getting himself into.
  22. It has happened 9 times previously over the entire franchise history for the last 112 games. 1905-1910, 1929, 1935, and 1945. 1906 was the best at .796. 1984 was the next closest as we finished 68-44 or .607 down the stretch. 1969 we finished 58-53 (.523) from game 50 on.
  23. All 38 games vs. Central Opponents- 26 NL and 12 AL. We will see Cincy 6 more times. STL 3 Hou 9 Milky 8 and Chi, Det, Clev, and Minny 3 each. Now is the time! Need .634 ball or 71-41 from here on out. Lets Go Cubs!
  24. What is everyone's obsession busting on Goodwin for? Guy hit .268/.332 in his 14 year career. Thats about average for todays standard. I think i will write rotoworld a nasty note.
  25. Williamson is sick and Dempster has left the team to be with his wife who is expecting. Our bullpen is going to be spectacular the next few days.
