  1. attack the argument, not the person.
  2. i for one am super excited Dusty gets extended. Grats Johnny B.!
  3. Leads the majors in fewest HRs given up, fewest HRs per 9 innings, and leads the majors in ground ball outs. 64% of the outs he records are via ground ball. Something tells me that in one corner we have the Sabremetric geeks who believe in Ks and limiting Babip vs. the other corner wanting GB outs off of BABIP. To me it is the classic 2 seem vs 4 seem fastball discussion. I like 2 seem fastballers. Always have because of my idolization of Sutter. I understand the medical reasoning on the durability of overwhelming 2 seem fastballers, but i like their ability to keep the ball low in Wrigley on windswept days and the ability to get a DP in a jam.
  4. dude, thats uncool. dont besmirch the name of Brother Ray for a cheap laugh.
  5. Someone ship a case to the DBacks in care of Johhny Estrada. I am sure he would be thrilled to know that secret.
  6. further proof that small ball wins ball games when properly executed. :)
  7. Going to the 8th in Fresno, 2-2. Iowa tied it on a throwing error caused by Auggie Doggie jumping around on 2b. Watson got out of a huge jam in the Fresno 7th for our Cubbies. Heart of the order coming. Lets go Micah!
  8. Micah had 3 hits again last night in Iowa. Time for the show, lets go. Call him up now. Send down Theriot. He should never have been at West Tenn in the 1st place this year.
  9. 119 games left. 72 wins or .605 now. 10th place for Wild Card- 6.5 behind Cincinnati and Zona/Rockies for the spot.
  10. Thats a good point. And you could add Mitch Williams to that list too, after the Joe Carter thing.
  11. Managers have the right to run on the field to communicate a problem with the umps. They also have the right to get ejected. Ozzie was upset because of the AJP-Z confrontation. He came out to talk to the umps because of the warning both teams got in the pre-game ump meeting. I think he was trying to make the point that Z was trying to instigate a fight. Although clearly, AJP should not have been rounding 2nd base clapping his hands above his head. Dont think you will see a fine.
  12. The 9th inning king. Hope he enjoys his retirement.
  13. I think that Hawk and the other guy actually got something right (believe me, i cant believe the idiots actually were this brilliant). During the broadcast today, they were talking on the Cubs not taking pitches against Contreras. Hawk says you really cant take pitches against someone who you know is good and is going to be around the zone. Got to get on them before they put you in the hole. Then the color guy said, well they have been doing it all year to everyone. Think about it. The Cubs only beat good, established pitchers. Good, established pitchers are good because they hit the zones with their pitches, or are around the zone. Impatience probably pays off against them. However, young pitchers are usually everywhere. Going after them would usually lead to frustration, because half the time they arent hitting their spots and probably are not in the zone as much. I think this is the teams #1 problem over the last decade. We just dont have a hitting coach that has been smart enough to figure it out.
  14. Lets see, right hander out of the Cubs organization. Just a matter of time until he blows his shoulder out and winds up on the DL.
  15. With the Yanks now being valued at $1 Billion and the Dodgers selling last season for $430 million, i would be shocked if the Tribune let them go that cheap. I think it would take around $600-650 million to buy the Cubs straight out from the Trib. And rule #2 about high finance...its not about asset value, but often times free cash flow.
  16. That makes me a saaaaaaaaddddd panda. Wish someone would give me a free million dollars too.
  17. #1 the effectiveness of a starter has little to do with a win-loss record. #2 we have Z, Prior, Marshall, and Miller definitely locked up for next season. Probably need 1 more guy to step forward. Williams will be good, he just needs to work on a couple of things. Ryu is a possibility, but may be better suited for relief. Guzman might still yet figure things out. #3 there is a really deep pool for catchers and starters this offseason. I think the Cubs could do OK in it. Dont need to ransom the future for the Dtrain. #4- Rusch should never have been extended. He had one good year for his entire career and Hendry over reacted. Last year and this year are more his normal style. Expecting anything else was silly.
  18. Ya, Barrett started the fight. no question about that. he said it in so many words. AJP was actually kind of shocked because Barrett is apparently one of his few friends in the game- he said they knew each other from after high school on. I think both were a little dazed and wouldnt have acted like that otherwise. I hope Mr Watson takes that into consideration.
  19. 12 BBs? That would be tied for 4th on the Big Squad right now- behind TWalk, Murton, and ARam.
  20. And another thing. MacPhail needs to tell Hendry to go to heck if he decides to hire the coaching staff like he did for Dusty. Let this manager bring in his own guys. I am sick of the Clines, Matthews, and Rothschild contingent.
  21. i say give him a shot. if he cant hang, then Cedeno will have to leadoff and Pie will need to bat 2nd. No one in the entire Cubs organization has this thing called plate discipline.
  22. Brenly is awful and Cuban wouldnt be allowed to buy a MLB team. I dont know if he has enough money to front ownership for a large market team like the Cubs anyway. The best proven manager available in the offseason (and god help me for saying this) is Bobby V who is over in Japan right now. We could try a new manager out, but none spring to mind.
  23. Prediction: Zman goes off the deep end and beans Jim Thome in the 2nd inning, putting Thome on the DL for the rest of the season with a broken bone (ending the Sox chances for the Series). A fight ensues where 3 more Cubs will either get suspended or hurt for a long length of time. We are forced to call up the entire infield from Iowa, and go on a long winning streak of 3 games.
  24. i am still not convinced on the Dtrain. and i am not willing to pay to see him in Cubbie Blue. We have a lot of needs right now, but i can assure you that starting pitching is well down the list. we need some pop at 3b and LF/RF to help pull out of this. We keep Pie to leadoff next year. He wont be a repeat of CPatt, so you wont see him before Sept 1.
  25. In my 30+ years of following Cubbie baseball, the only time i have been embarrassed to be a Cub fan was 2004. That team was an absolute disgrace to the game itself. They set new lows in just about every human category for a baseball team. These guys are inept, but at least they are trying. The Bob Kennedy years from 1976-1981 were really bad. So bad that Wrigley finally gave up ownership to the Tribune. Had good young players, a decent pen, and some entertaining vets like King Kong, but never could find starting pitching, OBP, or OF power besides the Big Ape. Also did some pretty stupid trading too. 99-00 were truly awful years too. Riggleman, Baylor, and Lynch were awful (though each is very nice off the field). I blame most of that mess though on Himes and Hendry, who were special assistant and pd director. That was about the time that Jim felt the need to permanently destroy CPatts career. Too many people had too much input and too many poor decisions were made on and off the field. Hopefully we will shake out of this next year. If we fall back towards the late 70s, hopefully the Tribune will get out like Wrigley did and get new decent corporate ownership in the Chicago area.
