  1. But why would a big league manager twice, not just once, preface a player in the lineup by saying "young"? I'm not trying to read into it, I'm just looking for an explanation I guess. I've never heard a manager do that before and I think it's kind of odd. Well, he used to refer to Choi as "Big Choi." Yesterday, he referred to Bynum as "Fast Freddie." They're all friendly terms. Point well taken. I forgot about the "Big Choi" nickname.

  3. I noticed a few things from today's broadcast. During the Dusty Baker show, Dusty was giving the lineups and he said "batting seventh is "Young" Murton and batting eighth is "Young" Ronny Cedeno." Did they both change their first names? Also, did anyone notice in the first that Ronnie was getting on Walker for not scoring on the basehit (clearly he isn't a big TWalk fan) , but then had no problem making excuses for Ramirez getting doubled off.
  4. Ah, hell. I'll join in on the fun, too. Care to wager on that? I don't wager, ever. Well........I *did* bet on the Marlins on games 6 and 7 and won about 1,500 bucks. Almost never. It's a feeling, based on past history with how our starter's injuries tend to go. Soul, the fellow Cub fan I watched game 6 and 7 with did the same thing you did and he won a boatload of money. Easy money.
  5. Could someone explain Dusty's love affair with this guy? I heard that Neifi was originally signed to a minor-league deal. So not only was there no interest from any other club, he had to take a minor league deal with the Cubs. And now, he'll probably ending up starting at short. Good thing Dusty's not putting any pressure on Ronny.
  6. Twins scouting director? I like the sound of that for the Cubs. Anyone have any info on him?
  7. Craig Monroe has decent speed and some power. Hendry might be liking that .825 ops from 2004. Brace yourselves for I~Rod & Monroe. DeFence! *clap* *clap* I seem to remember hearing a while back that the Cubs may be interested in Monroe this offseason. Not sure of where, though. Edit: LINK I saw Soto's name mentioned. Anyone seen him play and who would he be comparable to at this point?
  8. shhhh This is another issue that people want to ignore when showering praise on Hendry and management. Hendry unequivocally said that it wouldn't matter when Kerry went under the knife, that he'd be ready for ST regardless. The fact that its even newsworthy that there are now reports indicateing that he will be ready for ST directly conflict with Hendry's understanding of the nature of Kerry's injury and the surgery to repair it. Its like a freaking Keystone Cop routine. Not if you apply the theory I outlined a few posts earlier. Its not that its "newsworthy" that he is on track to be ready for the season. Its that Hendry is laying the groundwork via the press to give him a position of strength from which to negotiate with free agents. If the story had been about how the Cubs were desperate for a certain position instead of how their in-house options appear to be good enough or ready to go, then agents would have the Cubs over a barrel. I don't think Kerry has stayed healthy enough for any agent to put any stock into that.
  9. I believe that the Cubs have a club option for 2007 and unless he has an awful season or another major injury I can't see them not exercising the option. No way they let a guy that talented walk. The option is for 13.5 million with a 3 mil buyout. He would have to have one heck of a year to justify $13.5 million. Unless he's changed his mechanics, he'll probably be back on the DL and it won't be too hard of a decision.
  10. Agreed It would have been nice to see Cedeno start for maybe a month last year to get a look at him, but I guess the Cubs felt otherwise......
  11. Am I missing the boat on Williamson? 5.65 ERA 14 IP 15 H 9 ER 3 HR 23 K 6 BB Great walk to K ratio, but other than that I don't see much. I honestly only saw him pitch twice and he didn't look that great either time. Is it just a matter of getting the rust off? I'd appreciate some opinions regarding him.
  12. Sign another closer to close. If you offer Wagner or Ryan something around 3/30, they'll sign, regardless of Dempster's presence. You really think the Cubs would do that to Demspter? Trust him with a role. Watch him kick tail in that role. Reward him with a new contract to continue in that role. Then do a 180 on him? I'm sure Dempster is a pro, and would take it in stride, but I don't see Hendry as that type of GM. Agreed. I think the closer issue is settled.
  13. I realize that as Cubs fans, we're all hurting and jealous of the Sox' recent success. But could we please limit the amount of socioeconomic rips on people from the South Side? These references to "ghetto trash", cocaine and meth use/fabrication, and gun usage make me embarrassed right now to be a Cubs fan. This comes across as elitist, classist, and racist. I have no problem with hating Sox fans because they're rooting for what we believe is the wrong team, but to do so simply because they generally don't live in the nicest area of Chicago is prejudicial and uncalled for. =D> =D> =D>
  14. Thank God I live all the way over on Ashland. Also, look on MLB.com tomorrow for a quote from me. A freelance writer had the nerve to ask me questions at the bar because I am a Cubs fan. Did you actually expect bars in Chicago to not be filled with Sox fans? Were you expecting a giant contingent of Cub fans to be out watching the White Sox, even in the Wrigley area? And if you believe your own opinion of Sox fans, why even bother with the potential for trouble?
  15. Yea, there were hardly any bandwagon-jumping Cub fans in 03'. I'm sure nobody ever bought their first Cub hat that year. I don't live in Chicago so it's easier for me. It would have been much worse for me personally if the Cards had won it all. I really couldn't care less if the Sox win it or not. They are a non-factor in my baseball life. But some of the things I've read on this board concerning them is a little embarrassing as a Cub fan. Sour grapes does not go over well on this board. This actually makes me more embarrassed and angry at the Cubs. I am a fan of the team that is approaching their 100th anniversary of their last championship. How pathetic is that? That's what I'm angry and embarrassed about. The Sox are going to be World Champs. The Cubs are at the top of the mountain of losing.
  16. Of course he was, the amount of sour grapes about the White Sox on this board is really dragging it down. The Sox are in the series, deal with it! Stop making a million posts trying to drag them down! Amen there.
  17. Cosigned. Yea, god forbid someone else would buy them and have to follow in the giant championship footsteps put forth by Tribco.
  18. I wasn't able to watch the game after it was 4-2 Stros. I click on MLB.com this morning and I still can't believe it. I never thought the Sox would win a title before the Cubs. The Sox hire a manger who's team goes to the World Series in his 2nd year. The Cubs hire a manager who's team gets within 5 outs of the World Series in his 2nd year and the team somehow can't sniff the playoffs. Hope Hendry has a BIG offseason.
  19. Beautiful........................bring on the next Burnitz-like player.
  20. this always bothered me about the "alternative" movement of music in the '90's, the idea of "selling out" if you dont do what you did the album before, you "sold out" Danny Elfman had it right in 1979. "There's Nothing Wrong With Capatalism" Also had it right with the "Batman" soundtrack. Man that was sweet! He is also responsible for "The Corpse Bride" music......
  21. http://www.desipio.com/2005/10/21/departing-dusty-are-the-dodgers-dumb-enough/#more-1060 I know, I know.....but wouldn't it be nice?
  22. I would have liked Girardi, but I'd say Fredi Gonzalez would be my first choice. I thought Baker was a great hire at the time. I heard an interview with Bayless shortly after the hire and he said wait a few years and see what you think. I'm not a big Bayless fan, but he was right on that one.
