  1. Post all star break, Prior had a 3.88 ERA, so you can stop claiming it was over 5.00 for the second half. Crimeny. The guy has a 3.24 career ERA, which would be one of the lowest career ERA's in post-1920's baseball. The one and only question mark to debate with Prior is health. Good catch, Tim. Prior had 12 quality starts out of 15 tries after the all-star break, compiling a 6-4 record, while the team was 8-7 in those 15 games. Except for his high walk rate, his line looks pretty good. The one thing that jumped out at me..... of the 43 runs given up by Prior after the all star break, 14 of them were in the first inning.

  5. I thought it was how Baker used him that you couldn't stand. :wink: The heat of the moment does not help one's sense of proper perspective. :D One last, funny story about it, though. My now-wife thought his name was pronounced Knifey, and thus he became her favorite player. She was very dissapointed it was actually Neigh-fee, and promptly went back to complaining about the fact I spend so much time watching the Cubs and talking about them on NSBB. Here's hoping that we both get a life someday !! :wink: Fred, if it hasn't happened by now, I don't think there's much hope for us. :) [sigh]

  7. I've never kept track of scoring by inning before this last season, so I don't have any history to compare it to. I'll be real insterested to see how this plays out in the coming year. Is there something of a trend to this, or is it completely random ?

  9. No. The grand slam game was Sun 24 July 05. Wow, for some reason I always thought that homer came much later in the season. Me too. I thought mid August. If you had asked me yesterday, I would have thought the same thing. As the quirks of the schedule worked out, that game on 24 July was the last time we faced the Cardinals until 05 Sept.

  11. As near as I can figure out, there was only 1 instance last season when Neifi Perez started 3 consecutive games when nobody was hurt. That was an 8 game stretch from 20 Aug (15 days after Nomar came back) until 24 Aug (when Ramirez went down). This occured during one of Perez's hot streaks, when he put up this line......   15. Well you can't just let him sit in the bullpen when there isn't a save chance. He's got to get out and use him arm like any other pitcher every once in a while. I'm not advocating sitting him for long stretches. I'm talking about pitching him for a 2nd or 3rd day in a row when the Cubs are up by 5 going into the 9th. I seem to remember that happening often last year and it drives me crazy. That did not happen often. Below is a listing of the games that Ryan Dempster appeared in as a reliever. There were a total of 10 games in which he appeared that the CUBS won by more than 3 runs. (a typical non-save situation). In 7 of those 10 instances, Dempster was pitching on at least 4 days rest. The 01 Jun game vs. Los Angeles was a game started by Koronka, and as you might expect, that meant Baker had to go to the bullpen early and often. While it was the third consecutive game for Dempster and not a save situation, Dempster was the 5th relief pitcher used by the CUBS in the game. In the 24 July game at St Louis, Dempster entered the game in the 9th with a 4-3 lead, and proceeded to pick up a blown save and a win, as Neifi Perez hit a grand slam in the 10th. In the 02 Sept game at Pittsburgh, Dempster entered in the 8th inning with the score 4-3 in favor of the CUBS and was the beneficiary of 3 more CUBS runs in the 9th inning. I'm gonna have to bust you on that one. Teh Cobs have never scored 3 runs in the 9th, silly. :lol: Oh, yeah ??? :wink:

  17. Pretty much. He was a regular for a couple of years early in his career with the Giants, but a utility player for most of his career. He played mainly SS and 3B but also played some at 1B, 2B, OF, and C. Yes, Jose was a lot like Neifi Perez, only with less power. He became a utility player early on because it was just too easy to find someone better.

  22. I lived in Charlotte for a couple of years. The fans there didn't have any problem with the Hornets, it was all about their owner. If he would have sold the team, they would have flourished there. It's true that North Carolina has a lot of Braves fans. But it was also true that NC had a lot of Falcons fans before the Panthers came into being, and that didn't seem to hurt the Panthers any. I truly believe that the Charlotte area could support MLB, and better than Miami did, at that. edit: and I sure would love to go back to Charlotte once a year to see the CUBS play !!!
  23. Peter Angelos can go take a flying leap at the moon. He's got 1 vote out of 30. Charlotte is 440 miles from Baltimore. If only it worked that way. He somehow seems to strongarm his way to a bit better than a 1 in 30 vote. Charlotte is not in "that area". Angelos has nothing to say about it.
