  1. Bruce, if/when the Cubs go after Soriano, will it be as an OF, or could they offer him second base to sweeten their offer?
  2. Girardi may want the Cubs job, but if the Nats were to offer him a job, I wouldn't expect him to hang around hoping that Hendry might eventually offer him something. I heard (I can't remember where) that Girardi was really only interested in two jobs - the Cubs and Yankees. I also have heard that he has broadcasting offers to fall back on if he wants to wait for a suitable position.
  3. Who the manager is should have no bearing on whether or not the Cubs get ARod. I think he means regardnig ARods waiving of the no trade clause. Oh yeah. Still, it doesn't seem that ARod is too close to anyone on the team, including the manager. I think all the "I want to stay in NY" stuff is a bunch of hooey. Why in God's name would he want to stay? If anything, his relationship with Piniella might be more significant at this point.
  4. Who the manager is should have no bearing on whether or not the Cubs get ARod.
  5. I don't think the Yankees necessarily need to get a 3B in a trade for ARod. They can get one later. What they need is starting pitching, and I think a trade that nets them a #1 type starter could get the job done as well.
  6. IIRC, Torre was almost canned last offseason. The Boss was just waiting for an excuse to do this, and knew who he wanted to replace Joe.
  7. The Yankees should be keeping ARod and looking to get rid of Randy Johnson, Carl Pavano, Jared Wright and rest of the overpaid, underacheiving starting pitchers that really have cost them over the past couple years. This is an illogical scapegoat situation fueled by the morons at ESPN and Cashman should be too smart to get caught up in it. I can't imagine Cashman trading away A-Rod for less than he otherwise would just because the fans are angry at him. If he goes, the Yankees will get a bundle in return. I totally agree that what they need to do, is sign some free agent starters, but, shhhh, let's keep that on the down low. When ARod goes, it won't be Cashman's idea.
  8. ARod has played his last game as a Yankee, IMO. I hope Hendry has Cashman's phone number.
  9. I'd roll the dice on Girardi. I agree...What choices are left Brenly or Lou? Brenly. Lou may be worse than Dusty. At that point, what might matter most is who has the shorter contract, and who is most likely to be canned after one year. I have to believe a really bad 2007 means Hendry is gone before 2008, which also probably means a new GM gets to pick his own guy. I have a feeling that Pineilla may want a long contract, and I don't think Jim is in a position to offer one. I hope.
  10. I believe that Dusty was Jim's first choice and he hadn't even thought about the replacement before yesterday. Even if you believe that Hendry wanted to keep Baker (and he probably did), Dusty has been gone for a while now. As soon as the Cubs fell totally out of contention this year, Dusty was done, and I'm sure Hendry knew it. Jim gave some thought to possible replacements awhile ago, I'm quite sure. The only reason Baker held onto his job until the end of the season is because Hendry likes him and didn't want to can him. Jim didn't tell him before the end because he dreaded doing it, IMO. I think he held his job because Hendry was looking for any excuse to bring him back. Lots of teams have replacements already set-up when a guy is fired, especially when that guy has been a lame duck for a long time. But once it got to a certain point, there weren't going to be any excuses that would be adequate, and Hendry had to know that.

  13. This early? They aren't wasting time are they... Just heard it on Cold Pizza as well.
  14. wow, this division is pathetic.
  15. If true, I think Outshined and I deserve kudos for calling it. Vance was pretty vocal in his belief that Mulder's hip injury would hurt him in the long run as well. You're right, I remember that. Kudos to Vance too! IIRC, quite a few people were skeptical of Mulder's future durability when that trade went down.
  16. So 3 years isn't enough to judge a decline in performance, but one start is enough to declare a pitcher to be incapable of repeating previous success? I don't know if Livan has ever missed a start in his career. Prior has been getting all kinds of different injuries since he came to the big leagues, and it's affecting his stuff. Same can be said for Wood. The fact that Livan has pitched so many innings could be affecting his stuff and contributing to his decline. THe sword cuts both ways. I am not ready to jump on board with Carroll, either. I think some fans are so frustrated at this point that they can't be objective.
  17. What about when $11 million is for dead weight (Rusch, Jones, Neifi) and about $19 million is for perpetually injured pitchers (Prior, Wood) jones is way overpaid, has major defensive issues and as a baserunner is only second to alou in ineptitude but i would hardly call him "dead weight". Jones at 6 million is not dead weight at all, but it's the 3 years that could become problematic.
  18. Me too, I'm sad to say.
  19. Karma? While I won't be so foolish as to make a claim inferring that ALL Cub fans have done this, there is no doubt that the name Rick Ankiel has been used in a similar manner at times. There have even been a few mocking Daryl Kile. Bottomline, there always some fans in every fan base that true fans would rather not claim as their own and to blame or label an entire fan base based on the few is wrong. I would never mock Kile, because death is not funny. But I will admit to reveling a bit in Ankiel's failure, and deriving at least a modicum of satisfaction from Pujol's injury. If Carpenter were to have season ending surgery tomorrow, you wouldn't find me crying about it. Of course many Cards fans take some pleasure in the fact the the Cubs vaunted rotation has thus far been a flop. When you have a rivlary like the Cubs/Cards or Sox/Yanks, it's to be expected. Now things like saying Prior takes a liner in the head or making light of Kile's death are just going too far (unless it's about A.J. Pierzynski).
  20. I'd say the same for Barrett. Sure. 90% of the league wouldn't get warm fuzzies inside like they do when A.J. gets hit, though. Barrett has issues, but he's a few rungs up the ladder from A.J. Pierzynski is widely vilified, mostly be his own ex-teammates. And for good reason.
  21. All right. But the bottom line here is that the Cubs would be more than justified if they cut Rusch loose right now.
  22. Ah, finally! The intelligent and fact filled thesis I've been waiting for... Wow, dude. just wow.
  23. I agree with you. No blasphemy here. I never liked Harry Carey. I didn't hate him, but his calls were sometimes like this: "There's a line drive,...ground ball,..no,..pop..., uh, he struck out." Put it this way, the Cubs have had better announcers than Harry. Some were much better. Harry was painful to listen to for years before his death. As for as his home run call, my friend (who is also a rabid Cubs fan) used to mock it as kids. "It might be, it could be, it is.....caught by the pitcher." Horrible judge of the distance of fly balls.
  24. That's basically what the Cubs have right now. A bunch of guys that don't strike out that much. Neifi Perez rarely strikes out. The Reds have K'd 140 more times than the Cubs, and I'll take their offense over the Cubs all day long. Preach it brutha! True, but Gwynn and Grace could rake. We don't have any hitters of that caliber.
  25. I was thinking of this thread as I watched him hit that homer.
